The Charles Spalding McDonald Cup?

What's "community" about the Docklands stadium? Surely this can be played at princess park or Casey.

Play it the country AFL, seriously

This will be an interesting game. I would have thought we would use this opportunity to look at some kids. We really need to know how well embedded our system is with the guys who are pushing for spots. I don’t think winning or losing is that important in a practice game, we just need to make sure we are ready for the year ahead.

Flash. This must be a dress rehearsal for the first game against the Dogs IMO. Pick as close to our round one team as possible.  The rest can show their wares playing for Casey.

I can understand the desire to see how the young blokes go in a “real” game. I would like that as well, but… I also think it is more important to “ hit the ground running” and thump as many of our opponents as we can early in the season. We need, if we can, to establish our dominance over other clubs so that they expect to lose to us.
Go Dees.  B2B in 22

Why is it being played at “Soulless Stadium”?

is this so the caterers can charge full price?

Why? I'm not wishing to be a smart alec here but we've had a long season prior and I would have thought managing players prior to the real thing is more important.

Not sure of the losing momentum argument.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for the AFL

This time last year we rested Oliver and Viney was out and otherwise we went with the best 22.

I’d expect we’d go the best 22 again and only rest someone if they are sore. Hibbo and Salem two to watch in that regard.

I don’t expect anyone outside the 22, or possibly the 25 if you include Hunt, Weid and Bedford to get a run. If Fritsch, Lever and Viney are good to go then that’s our best 28.

The opportunity to throw young players in was there against North. But they can do it the old fashioned way through the VFL.

Not at all, happy to elaborate. I’m fixated on the likely COVID impact during the season. I think we, and everyone else, are going to have our depth seriously tested. Teams that can absorb change and maintain their system are likely to do better than teams that can’t.

i understand the counter arguments, maybe we just play the ball in front of us and worry about the future if/when it comes. I just think this is a good opportunity to see whether we can structure up well with some of the next gen players playing.

I want us to really smash Carlton! They have always been arrogant ……..s and they really think they are going to be good this year. I would love us to nip that in the bud, right now.

What about Dunstan?

Reading the herald-sun

malthouse predicts the bummers to be premiers. Other articles pizz in the pockets of other clubs supporters .

am I missing something, I thought we had dominant wins over the jeelong pensioners and footescray and showed same intensity over norf. Only petty missing from the GF side.

are we flying under the radar again

The Hun this time of year is clickbait puff pieces about Carlton and Essendon. Most of their supporters are dumb enough to buy the BS. We don't need puffing up.

And we cannot forget the collywobbles

Unless an inside mid has to miss I can't see why he'd suddenly get elevated in to the team

Let us take the grand finalists view of  a practice game. Who cares ?

At this time of the year all new contenders are tipped by has been coaches or journalist who never played a game and are unable to understand that game has moved on from the past.

The GF showed that unless you understand that having a deep midfield without explosive players like Petracca, Bontempelli, Oliver, Dangerfield, Walsh and Martin then you are nowhere in the race to the premiership.

Look at the premiers from 2016 to 2021 each premiers had the mix of explosive midfielders surrounded by a good midfield.

Only the MFC has the luxury of having 2 of these types supported by Viney, Harmes, ANB, Pickett who may become an explosive type in the future, Jordan and Sparrow with wingers like Langdon and Brayshaw.

Fremantle has Fyfe who is injury prone but has had no experienced support surrounding him with the result they struggle against teams who have great midfields.

I believe the reason PA did not do better in the finals they lacked a player of explosive qualities.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons have the Bye next week but then are on the road once again when they come up against the Gold Coast Suns on the Gold Coast in what could be a last ditch effort to salvage their season. Who comes in and who comes out?

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
