Not ideal but also not a huge surprise. There were always going to be contracts like this as we start to feel the pinch of keeping the team together. As much as I hate the cats I admire their ability to hold onto much of their premiership(s) squad for quite a while, same can be said about the Hawks. As success builds the decision will come to those who know they may be able to get an additional $250k+ or an extra 1-2 years at other clubs, but also have a desire to keep the band together. 

Gus will definitely be able to get a better contract elsewhere, so it will be up to him and the club to see if they can find the middle ground that suits both worlds. I love Gus to bits, but I’d be prioritising Jacko first as a player to sign up.

Buddy leaving was certainly the biggest move since plugger maybe? He got a 8 year offer? I don't think Gus is getting an 8 year offer from opposition clubs.

Buddy leaving also freed up cash for Hawthorn to recruit Frawley, Lake and McEvoy who all have made significant impact in their premiership success.

For what it's worth I actually want Brayshaw to say 'Demon17'. But as @Hannibal Inc. has already said, we don't want to be paying too much in retaining good role players like Gus who are easily replaceable.

It’s a fair question, I think he was the back up plan to Isaac Smith. I don’t think it was a case of we tried every other option for him, I think it was a recognition that we needed a player with footy smarts on the other wing and gave Gus the challenge. My thoughts are that Gus still would’ve been placed into that role to create positional competition with Smith. 

History will show now that Gus made the position his own when thrown the challenge. I actually don’t think there are many others at the club that could’ve done what he did this year, his contribution through our wins have been massively underrated. 

With Jones and Jetta gone, Gus is one of our true heart and soul players. 

Brayshaw certainly has put a different slant on his wing position (with the help of the Match Committee of course)

I can't recall a time when his direct opponent (or the opposition wingman) beat him on the day.  Or well beaten?  Has that ever happened?

Gus doesn’t play on an opponent, he plays a position, and a very important position it is

Without his work, we do not win the GF I think

(his work in the 3rd Quarter helped keep the dogs scoring to a minimum) not every player can do that.
he plays the opposite style to Langdon, that’s why it is so effective across the ground.

Brayshaw plays an important roles in the team structure.

Brayshaw is coming out of contract and has put off talks.

Brayshaw has been chased by other clubs before.

In terms of losing players the clearest comparison might be Richmond letting Ellis walk as a starting wingman. They’ve lost some others along the way like Markov, CCJ/Chol, Butler, Higgins.

If the gap between staying and going becomes a difference between 3x450 and 4x650 then it’s significant no matter the tax rate. I’m not an accountant but I believe players can set aside 10% of their wage for image rights, chuck in a bunch of other deductions and that tax bill can come right down.

The overwhelming Flag members of the 3 Dynasties stayed - nearly all for less cash than they would have commanded elsewhere.

Anyone who left were fringe players and so fringe I can't even think of any examples.

Petty Lever Tommo snd Turner plus Tmac and Maysie can do 3 years more but Harrison Daniel Jake and maybe JVR are likely types to continue that great tradition Plus any other trades or Drafts.  

I think Gus will want to see how this season is panning out before committing. No doubt he will be looking at life after football and taking that into account when making a decision. Probably looking at possibilities of media after footy. Is getting exposure and experience with Gus and Gawny. Also the more success he has as a player the better after footy looks.

Chances are he will reach an agreement with the club. Probably a 2 year tops 3.

Absolutely SYUL 

Our defence basically saved the game in the first half of the third quarter by limiting with mids and forwards the run and carry of the ball by the Bullies.

They  had half ie 10 mins or 15 mins depending which time span you use snd they scored 2.0 from a pretty good advantage in possession. Remember the 5 goals in the 3rd quarter at Metricon that ruined our only Brisbane loss they took the game away with their skill on the ball.

No such happenings in Perth as our game and defensive plans all over the ground just squeeze the opposition in 2021 so they can't score freely for more than a quarter. 6 goals in one quarter four in the other 3 terms!! Our second halves are our best efforts.

So when Harmsey and Jack flicked the switch and Fritta took over we scored 7.1 in the same time being the balance of the third term. 
The game was basically over when Fritta scored his 5th goal 3 mins into the last term and we bolted in a sensational scoring blitz not seen in the modern game in the GF. 

Angus was so crucial  (All year ) in fact as he controlled and pressured defensively mainly but attacking when allowed during the game. His opponents were not allowed to run riot on the wing as Lingers  controlled the opposite side with running snd good disposal interspersed by a goal or two. AA style in fact.

But we are set up well with Howes  Rosman Laurie Bowery Baker and Jordon plus others to be recruited for a wing role if Angus does leave.

A second flag is going to make it harder for him to leave a potential dynasty depending upon his life situation with family reasons and rewards crucial on the other hand 

 

Maybe hes just taking time to consider a deal and amount of years the club may have verbally put to him?

Speaking with family and team mates perhaps? Would be hard to imagine he wants to leave, seems very ingrained at the club with all the podcasts etc etc. I would say hes a wanted species.

....maybe hes concentrating on his golf game...

Of course many took less but a huge reason everyone stayed was because they had 1.2M per season free.

If we trade Petracca we’ll find it far easier to pay the rest.

I don’t suggest we will do I expect we’ll lose a number of our top 30. Pick the right ones and we’ll be fine

I agree. I do however think he’s replaceable. Feel like we are in the box seat, he’s coming of his best game for the season in a GF. Last year people would have taken next to nothing to be rid of him

If he’s value goes up it means he’s must be having a blinder of a season, which can only good for us. If his value goes down as I said at the start he’s replaceable.

Yes everyone is replaceable, but does the quality remain the same?

We have 2-3 players who could play the wing role adequately, but they don’t have the same qualities as AB

Whilst the window is open for the next 3-4 years, i want Brayshaw to stay. 
He was just as important as Tracc and Clarry last year. People hust didn’t notice his work until September
