 We have taken Judd McVee

183cm 68kg.

East Fremantle prospect Judd McVee is a smooth-moving defender with clean handling and skills, traits which may bode for more midfield minutes in the future.

(other reports ive read say he is a goal kicker. so no idea bout his position yet)

The Demons have definitely been keen on recruiting a few East Fremantle Sharks players recently!

Luke Jackson

Trent Rivers

Taj Woewodin

and now.... Judd McVee!

MELBOURNE will be giving Judd McVee a shot at the top level, signing him in the NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

McVee was made to wait for his AFL call-up after missing selection in Thursday night’s National Draft, but there was plenty of interest in the defender due to his class off half-back.

The 18-year-old is known for providing plenty of rebound from defence and will complement the likes of Christian Salem, Jake Bowey and Trent Rivers at the Dees.

Standing at 182cm, McVee has clean hands at ground level and impressed many with his composure for East Fremantle in 2021.

The Western Australian becomes Melbourne’s fourth new addition this week, following the recruitment of Jacob van Rooyen, Blake Howes and Taj Woewodin in the National Draft.

Liking those attributes.
Rounds out our draftees with some ground balls / clean hands etc which was stated as a weakness during the season and reason they were keen to play Bowey.

there's the lockdown defender we've been after

The hermit kingdom has proven to be very fertile ground for us lately.

Jed Hagan definitely one to watch, his desire to work himself into the ground with repeat efforts is like nothing I have seen since Ben Cousins.

Just accumulates and racks up possessions due to pure workrate

Any thoughts/insight on McVee?

He sounds like Christian Salem but perhaps without the footy IQ:

"One of the smoothest operators in the draft pool, Judd McVee is the kind of player you want rebounding the ball out of defence. He handles the ball cleanly and is efficient in his use by foot, showcasing class to manoeuvre out of tight spots and keep cool in a crisis. With greater consistency and enhanced midfield craft, McVee has the tools to become a tidy player at the top level".

STRENGTHS:

+ Class
+ Clean hands
+ Kicking
+ Rebounding

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Production
- Consistency

Very happy with this selection.

Edit:  I just saw the write up at the club which mentions his 'footy smarts'.  Maybe he is more like Salem than I first thought.

From Jordan McArdle who’s been covering the draft out West:

Geraldton/ product Judd McVee the only West Aussie picked up in the rookie draft. Once rated a top-10 draft prospect when he won WA’s under-16s MVP award, McVee has great foot skills, composure across half-back. Joins Sharks teammates Trent Rivers, Luke Jackson at the Dees.

Let's hope that Emperor McGowan doesn't deny them exit visas 🤔

Wow, fair rave on the young kid.

Sorry Roger, outside of PSA and state games, my WAFL Colts viewing over the last 18 months wasn’t great.

Don't worry monoccular. They're all on three year contracts earning hard currency for the state as part of the secretive Bureau 39.

Welcome aboard Judd looking forward to seeing you in the Red and Blue young man can’t have to many quality backs on the list. You will have the chance to train with the best players and coaches going around.

Looks like he has long arms for his height, might be useful for spoiling.

Interesting that he was a quality midfielder in under 16's then kind of relegated to a half back flank role in his draft year.

Seems to have gears like good players do. Cruises when evaluating his options then can pull the trigger if needed.

Did he finish school in 2020 like most WA guys do a year earlier than here?

I just wonder if he's a bit cruisy. Bit of a Travis Johnstone vibe almost. I wonder if the professional and competitive environment of the MFC will fire him up a bit.

Wow talk about bruise free footy. No one came near him.

He didn't get near anybody either. 1 missed tackle in the highlights.

Just hope he's not a skater.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
