The depth we have in part comes from the (so-far) fact that when your moment comes, if you perform, you keep playing. And players who don't perform (eg Brown mid-last year) will create opportunities for others. We can't dilute the strength by playing favourites.

Tough selection dilemma, but it's the kind of problem we could only have dreamed of in years past.

    Sorry if already been mentioned elsewhere but didn't David Schwarz play in #44 in his first season or so before taking over the #5?

    Big , strong CHF - hoping JVR has more luck with injury but if he manages to resemble the great man it would be amazing 

    There's no way he's getting CP5's jumper though

    Getting snippets of information regarding Van Rooyen and how he's performing at Casey. I'm keen to get some feedback from those who have seen him play. I.e who would he come in for if he strung some good games together? etc

    From the little bit I’ve seen of JVR he is a potential replacement for any of the taller forward options other than Fritta 

    of those it’s most likely he would replace either Weed or TMac - however he needs to consistently perform at Casey and build his knowledge of the game plan before he would be considered an option imo 

    I do think he has a bright future though

    Can take a mark with strong hands. I think we have been missing that for a long while. Weid is fumbler, tmac drops alot. BBB takes grabs and Fritra is more Russel Robertson type. Will be a solid player but at the moment, we don't need him in the seniors so he should develop his game at Casey.

    Yeah, I don't go with this theory.

    If he still had to physically develop then yeah...but he's a strong kid.

    If his tank is up to it, he has a few good games and Casey and Wied/Tommy aren't performing well then get him in.

    As a first round pick you really develop your game playing senior footy, you should be ready to go.

I’m comfortable in comparing JVR with the Ox of 1990 - again, that’s not to guarantee that he’ll make it but I’m buoyed by the fact that at the same stage in terms of age, JVR has played senior WAFL games and now kicked multiple goals at VFL level. 

    The big question is when will he make his AFL debut. If he was at North Melbourne or  one of the others at the foot of the ladder, he would probably have already played. But the beauty of being at Melbourne, is that he will get the time necessary for him to be physically and mentally prepared when the day comes.

    I’m interested in JVR’s height since some people claim that you have to be around 200cm to play as a key position forward. I’ve seen different statistics showing him to be 193, 194 & 195cm.

    Amazing recruiting yet again. Just turned 19 and is a unit already. Has good agility and confidence.

    Jack Riewoldt is 193cm and David Schwarz is 195cm. There are plenty of quality key forwards within that range.

    If JVR is good enough being 193+ (assuming he may grow more) then he’s big enough

    I like the set shot routine even for “gimme” shots from closer in front. 
    Casey watchers - how is his overall set shot accuracy?  How are his set shots from 50 or so?  
    On the run? Snaps? Angles?
    Certainly looks the goods in that limited highlight goal blitz.

    Like everyone on here I have high hopes for Jacob van Rooyen and hope that he continues to grow a couple more centimetres, however he already has size ala Darling and has pace and skill and is now starting to show his footy IQ. We will watch this young man with great interest.!!!

    Haven't seen enough of JVR yet to say who he is like.  TBH i think he is probably so early in his development we may be seeing a young fella who is only about 50% to 60% formed in terms of his style/skills & methods around the big sticks.  Still learning his craft and working his way through things.

    Early days and will probably be his own man, but does remind me (just a tad) of the late Greg Parke.  More so than the Ox.

    The Ox is a tough comparison.  Such a natural talent.  Had a nice leap, very good overhead mark yet also incrediblly mobile at ground level.  Bit of a bull with ball in hand.  Beautifully balanced & capable of easily  gathering the loose ground ball & finishing on the run even from 40 to 50 out.  Quite adept by foot on either side which made it very difficult for the opp to counter.  Would have/should have been one of the great CHFs of AFL had he not been crueled so many times.  His 1994 finals efforts were something to behold and i really thought we were a show for the Cup that year had Jakovich not been injured.

    Regardless if JVR ends up being near or at the level of either of these Demons we'll have something very special to look forward to.

    Good comparison. I see a lot of Schwarz in JVR. It’s the nuance in their movement - the small things I see. It’s really impressive. I think JVR is the next big thing, and he’s ours, and the league doesn’t even know it. It’s scary to think we could go back to back, and also have the best youth coming through. Nightmare for a list manager but good problem to have

    First time i've really watched the kid play properly to be honest, but my main take away outside of the 6 goals is physically he looks ready to go and runs really well. 

    I reckon he'll make his debut this season, and might be hard to get out of the side.

    • PREVIEW: Fremantle

      A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

      The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder.       What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around.It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
