Obviously a special jumper number at the MFC. Is there anyone on the list worthy of it at the moment, or do we retire it for a year? I wondered if Sparrow would want to move from 32 - he might be a candidate.

What does Demonland think?

I personally would give it a break.

Sparrow has done #32 proud and I am sure Vagg would agree.

Its had a long run, a short break cant hurt.

Good question. I was pondering this myself just recently.

I don't really know the answer - maybe leave it for this season.

I agree that a rest for No.2 sounds like a great idea I like Sparrow in 32. We could reshuffle some of the middle order numbers but Who would be able to step up to No.2 ??

I like what they did with 31, just give it to a player no expectations. That seemed to work out well this year.

Retired permanently. The two most famous number 2's, Flower and Jones both played long and storied carriers sticking by the red and blue while ultimately missing out on a GF appearance, one by a year and the other by half a year. I don't want anyone else having to that for the dees.

In saying that, if I was to put a number on a new jumper next year it would be 2.

I actually chatted to a mate about this today, i'd like to see the number go to a player who shows the Nathan Jones Heart, Loyalty and courage.

So i'd like to see Angus Brayshaw run out in the number 2, his selfless season, and performance in the Grand final make him worthy of 2

i think it'll go to dunstan plain and simple

I'd love to see it retired as you suggest. Even a ceremonial 5-year rest for the jumper would be a great sign of respect for a legend of the club.

Put it straight back into the rotation. The longer it's semi-retired, the more pressure it puts on the next holder to "live up to the number 2". No-one who saw Robbie or Nathan will forget its significance, no matter who ends up with it.

The less of a big deal that’s made, the better.
The pressure that comes with playing footy at the highest level is enough for any player. No need for additional pressure.

Just give it to any one who wants it or a new kid and move on. Throughout our history their have been many great players who could arguably had their numbers retired. Why honour one but not others?

thought this thread was about bowel movements.

Happy with Sparrow getting an upgrade or the undefeated Bowzer - who knows someone may put their hand up for it.

Or Stephen Tingay for me. Three great no. 2’s of my lifetime.

How about baby Woey? The young gun is coming with some good footy pedigree & also his father wore  No 2 at The Filth.

but his dad wore 22 for the dees so i hope he looks there first, wholesome if he does

Na...lets get another champion.

The only logical conclusion is to give it to whoever agrees to shave their head every week. That way all the bandwagon jumpers who hop back on after the Premiership won’t find it all too confusing.

’Good job Nathan ol’ chap’

With AVB leaving , I think the number 22 should go to him

1 good game and the Brayshaw love fest is nearly as over the top as the Jones love fest.

I have 3 possible options for the great #2 jumper number at the Melbourne Football Club. Worn with such distinction by Robbie Flower, Stephen Tingay and Nathan Jones.

Option 1 - Give it to Bailey Laurie who used to wear number 2 at the Oakleigh Charges and hasn't seemed to have much luck with a few injuries in his first year in the number 16 jumper.

Option 2 - Give it to whomever we pick up with our first round draft pick at around number #17 in the 2021 AFL National Draft.

Option 3 - Just rest it for one season as a sign of respect to Nathan Jones and then look to give it to a deserving player in season 2023.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
