Freo don't have any 2nd or 3rd round picks this year. Yet.

Yep, they'll have a fair few after they clear deck

We need to ensure we get enough 2nd/3rd round picks from Freo to grab the points require to satisfy Brisbane for their 1st rounder

Why not just tell Freo we want 3 first round picks and let them do the running around trying to get Brisbanes 1st rounder?

I think Max's comments were brilliant but are as much about putting an arm around Luke and showing that he supports him either way, as they are about trying to sway his decision. Great leadership,  but I don't know whether it changes my view on the situation all that much. Last time the media were so sure about a player leaving us Tom Scully had just held a press conference telling us he wanted to be a one club player

Can you remember the timeline on that? It was essentially a week or so before he then said he was off to GWS.

Or is my prejudice against him distorting the underlying facts here? I suspect it may be - but I don’t reckon there was a lot of runway between his b.s. statements and then hitting the GWS ejector seat.

That said, Jackson strikes me as a wholly different character to Scully - for a start, he seems very good natured and he’s definitely not a robotic sociopath.

Hope Maxy’s right here. I reckon Jackson has a big future, particularly with us.

Would love to see him sign on the week before the finals . That vote of confidence in the club would springboard the team in to the finals and give the rest of the AFL the big [censored] you

My understanding was GWS lobbed a substantial increase plus his old man a job in the final couple of days.

Would almost be the biggest F U since Trump won the US presidency.

We had all best hope North keep losing, if LJ wants to go back to WA.

Freo don't have the picks, and probably won't provide players of any value to trade.

Eagles offer a bucketload to LJ to come to them,  and can pick him up in the pre-season draft, if they finish last.

He gets what he wants. They get what they want. We get nothing.

Freo have 2 1st round picks (this year and next). We're not going to reject them because it's not optimum trade value.

Jackson will nominate a club, and a deal will get done.

Clubs and player managers are loathe to pull the PSD card.

For sure. It would still be nice for North to finish last though for that bit of safety blanket and take away some of that leverage for managers and clubs at the negotiating table.

Even if North finishes last WCE would still pick him up in the PSD. North aren't going to meet his price and force him to play somewhere he doesn't want to be. Especially when they are trying to build a culture there. Hell even WCE may not meet his contract demands if he makes it clear he only wants to play at Freo.

Agreed, Gonzo.  The big offer (if it is a big offer) is possibly only coming from one club

Especially as there is a large slice of speculation involved with a player like LJ.  He is not a proven star, he's not even proven at B+ level

But if course, he may well be heading for star-status

The pre-season draft as a choice happens very rarely and usually involves a player who definitely wants out (an element of disgruntlement)

My opinion (for what it's worth) is that he either ends up at Freo and they satisfy our demands in a trade (big ask) or he stays with us and signs at least a 2 year deal

I think you have it there Macca. I think he will go and that's ok with me but the min. is 2 first round picks.

The best thing to happen for us to have a chance to resign him was him being in Perth last week.

He had his first experience what it would be like to play for a club in a 2 club town.  The fish bowl where every thing you do someone is watching.  The media are all over you, walking down the street isn't an easy task, going to dinner you are guaranteed some one will want to disturb you for an autograph photo or chat.

No doubt he gets that a little bit in Melbourne but times it by 1000 in WA.

I don't think we need to worry as I reckon Eagles will destroy the Crows in Kennedy's final match.

I'm hoping Dogga stays as he is likely to be a very special player.  He's showing all the signs - particularly given his age - but he's not there yet. He could be anything - the next Schwarz pre knee, Kouta, Goodes or something unlike anyone else that has played - or he may end up as a talented tall utility that can play anywhere but never masters a position.

It makes me think if I were a Freo supporter and we were giving up this year and next year's first round picks and Meek (as an example) and potentially losing some other players who think Jackson will take their spot or eat up too much of their salary cap... is this deal worth it?  Isn't this selling the farm?  Are they really just Jackson away from a premiership or do they need a few more young talented players coming through?

I'm not doubting his value particularly when you see what the biggest trades have netted in recent years... but I feel like if it goes ahead, it could blow up in Freo and Luke's face.   There will be a lot of pressure on the kid to perform if this is what they have to give up.

See, I don't believe he's necessarily gone

2 first round picks isn't enough especially if the club knows that the pre-season draft isn't at play.  Are North or the Eagles going to pay him a lot more than what we would pay him (ball park $650k - $750k a year)

Does LJ even want to end up at either of those clubs?

Given that scenario we could play hard ball knowing that if Freo doesn't fulfill our needs, we'll get to keep LJ

I'd want picks 5, 10 & 18 knowing that there's a good chance that pick 5 or pick 10 could be a complete bust

Nothing is guaranteed with draft picks and that includes LJ becoming a top player ... that may or may not happen

Of course, if there is real, proven talent coming back our way (somehow) that changes the equation

There is no way he will go to the PSD.

He will not want that as part of his legacy and this will not get acrimonious.

I can see us with 3 first rounders over the next 2 years and I’d be surprised if we did not have void fillers in mind or even spoken to that these picks will be used on.

There is a post on BF Draft/Trades board from one of our supporters saying Dogga has re-signed.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
