Just on Sunday Footy Show Goodwin in a recent 3aw interview said something along the lines of “ we just ask him to play his best for the time that we have  him”.

Sounds like a slip of the tongue.

I wonder  how much this actually lowers our hand in the trade.

Didn't think it was possible when it passed 100 pages, but we are well on the way 🙌

Why does anyone care about things like this? Its weird that you even notice page numbers let alone comment.

I'm not sure why it would. There is no mechanism for us to keep him if he wants to leave.

Same El. I don’t buy it either. They’re in the same country ffs. They have the wherewithal to travel back and forth as often as they like.
Unlike some families who, say for example, have a son who lives in Europe and a parent who lives in Melbourne and they’re lucky to see each other once every two years. And the son is missing Australia like crazy and the parent is missing the son, also like crazy. That’s just a random example, of course. ☹️

I don't begrudge LJ wanting to move for money (and to go home) but at the same time we don't want to lose him.  There's a decent chance he will blossom into a star (has all the attributes)

But I expect the club to play hard ball especially if his future salary elsewhere is in the top bracket

Paying big money = quite a sizeable trade value

We have a recruiter with the midas touch but even so, drafting is flawed and you don't always get what you want.  Busts happen as a matter of course despite all the good intentions

I'd want 3 picks inside the top 20

Something like picks 5, 10 & 18.  That should just about do it unless there is some established talent attached to a trade

So can Freo come up with the goods?  With some creative & exhaustive trading they can but both clubs (Demons & Freo) might already know how it's all going to work out

I don't think it impacts our hand much in terms of trade. when you're offering a bloke 950k x 6 you are basically acknowledging that you have to pay up. the league needs to tap Freo on the shoulders though because they're making approaches to a few bigger name players and i think they realistically probably have JUST enough capitol to get this deal done, and that probably involves losing a player

I dont understand sorry  - why does the league need to get involved ?

I just mean it's a little bit irresponsible in my opinion, if you can't get the deal done in good faith don't make the approach.

The same for me, my whole family is back in Mexico. I just came back from seeing my family last month, how good is that!!

It doesn’t. And he said “maximise his time here.” People can imply what they want, Simon isn’t an [censored].

It'll be hilarious if LJ re-signs in October. All this waffle about draft trades or player swaps is meaningless. This thread needs to be put to bed.

Really this trade should be very similar to the Jeremy Cameron deal. By the reports it for the same money and length of his deal. $950- $1mil for 5 years. He had more runs on the board but Jackson has more years in front of him.
GWS received picks 13,15 and 20 with two second round picks going the other way.
By the sound of things the Dogs pick might be gettable for Freo if Lobb goes there although they would have to send something else to the dogs as well.
Brisbanes pick is up for grabs too so Freo might be able to trade for that with their future first.
I think if we get the 3 first rounds( Dogs, Freos and Brisbanes and send back our second round picks from this year and next that should be about right.
The Cameron deal really has set a marker for this one.

What was the Tim Kelly deal?  Throwing all in to get one player has set them back considerably.

Except Cameron was a lot older than LJ when he was traded ... so there's length of service at the new club to be factored in.  And that's quite significant

But the thrust of your argument is quite sound, Colm

I'd be wanting more back even though LJ is not in the same bracket as Cameron (yet)

A 6 year deal elsewhere for LJ would take him to age 26/27 ... so if he turns up trumps he's got (potentially) another 6 or 7 years after that contract

If LJ gets to B+ status or better elsewhere, that effectively means he plays elsewhere at that level for 13 or 14 years.  Players play longer these days

That's got to be worth a good deal for us coming back our way, all things considered

We need to be acting like real estate agents ... get the maximum return!

(That is of course if LJ is on the move ... a stalemate looming is another outcome)

If only you could stick an old head on young shoulders.

His mum & dad need to get in his ear and tell him what a huge mistake he's about to make.

Don't do it son!  Stay and help stamp your mark on the forthcoming dynasty!  3 years is nothing to acheive greatness.  Before you know it you'll be back home afterwards to celebrate!

Pick 14, future first round (which was pick 20 the following year),  24 and 37. Geelong gave picks 52, and future third round

What I don’t understand is how we a premiership team can’t attract any of the better key fwds over and yet freo is able to poach Jackson. What is going on

With regard to Jacko, I think it's just the go home factor. Could be pressure from family, friends etc., plus the reported $1M per year is a bloody good incentive. With regard to forwards, BBB was once the premier forward in the competition and we basically picked him up for nix. It was worth the role of the dice. I think that was our short term play and we haven't looked otherwise. So we have BBB, TMC and JVR will surely have a much bigger senior role next year. We may not need to entice a premier forward and can will develop another couple through the draft.

We don't know Dogga's personal circumstances

Lots of young people reassessed their priorities over the pandemic. Maybe he did too

He might be 3 hours away, but can only get there a handful of times per year.

That we might have family we miss living OS doesn't invalidate his homesickness, if that's what he has. Not that I'm saying you are ElDiablo.

Sadly it didn't work out for Hogan, but Jackson is a completely different cat

Should Dogga go, he will possibly get paid more to play in WA surrounded by family and friends. Win/win for him

Hopefully we will get a good deal. It would free up lots of cap space. I trust Taylor and Lamb to make the most of whatever happens

To be fair, we approached Adam Cerra last year despite the fact we didn't have much to offer Freo.

I think we’ve been very unlucky with how this has played out as a club. In normal situations he’s back and forth whenever he can, and he’s living in Melbourne experiencing a new place and all the great cultural things it offers. His family is visiting 5-6 times a year and seeing their son play at The G in front of 50,000 people as a guest of the club.

Instead he was living though horrific lockdowns and seeing his mates at home go to the beach, and talk [censored] about Victoria. WA lived virtually untouched by the pandemic for 2 years. I honestly think this is a huge factor in his thinking, and the pressure he’d be getting from his family and friends.

Let’s not forget that the pandemic has constituted 50% of Luke’s entire adult life.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
