Great info thanks!

I seem to recall Petty being a bit of a shining light as a forward in 2019 when everything was going pear shaped? His goal kicking let him down a bit but he showed a lot that year.

EDIT: Had a look at the stats Harry played 10 games, mainly as a forward in 2019. He took 43 marks and kicked 6 goals 5 behinds. Not great, not bad, heโ€™s a much better more confident player now, it would be interesting.

In comparison to Sam Weideman this year who's played 8 games this year for only 23 marks. If it's true that we're playing Petty up forward then you'd think it's just about lights out for Weideman's time at Melbourne.ย

I've always been a fan of Petty as a forward because he looked just as natural up there as he does down back. I personally didn't think they'd trial it this year especially so late in the season but it certainly can't hurt to try it.

With Daniel Turner signed up for 2 years and someone who's rated enormously high, maybe this could be a position switch going into next year with Petty to play up forward and Turner to take his spot down back.

Makes sense.ย  The impact (upside/downside) of playing Tomo (as long as it's in form Tomo) vs Petty as the 3rd tall defender will probably be marginal IMV.

However, the potential upside of playing Petty forward (if he slots into that role quicky enough)?ย  Reckon many will be coming out after a few matches and all saying "why did we/SG not try this earlier!"

My gut feel is both Petty and Smith are both better forwards (natural playing instincts/ability) than they are defenders.ย  More so Petty.ย  That's not to say Petty is an ordinary defender... pretty solid.

Have always thought this.

Weed can ruck so he's important esp if Luke walks.

I think we need to give Weid an opportunity to develop elsewhere. You cant just flip a switch and expect a player who has been playing all his life as a forward to suddenly become impactful in another position. Give him a pre-season in defense or as ruck relief and see how he goes.ย

As for LJ, If what he is being offered is true, that is mammoth deal and shows how much they value him. They cannot come to us with anything less than two first rounders (one being top 5) plus a solid starting mid 20's player (doubt it will be any of their key stars though).ย

Two weeks ago I was told by a Player Agent based in Perth, albeit not Lukeโ€™s Agent, that the offer is 8 years at 10.3 million from Freo.ย

If that figure is anywhere near true, you go home, play at the club your family is connected with, who are your ย supported club and they are currently top 4, it imo is a no brainer for Jacko and he is gone.

I donโ€™t think we would get anywhere near that offer and nor should we.

Do the best deal Dees and donโ€™t get shafted.ย

Freo offer a ridiculous salary and should pay a commensurate trade.

We should get a very good player, a top pick and maybe Meek as steak knives.

Yep, if I'm Luke I'm absolutely taking that offer and running. Unbelievable deal.

For our sake, I agree with @CYB, if you're willing to cough up that amount of ridiculous money and contract then be willing to cough up big for picks.

I'll leave it there

Great post here picket.

Summed up well in that Luke leaves for a life changingย  figure and best wishes to him , but an absurd, amount and leaves behind a club with great culture and leadership to lets face it to a club that will always come second to the behemoth that is the eagles in Perth.

I would be mortified if LJ was offered more or even equal to proven elites in Trac and Oliver around whom the club brand is building nicely.

I believe the Footy Dept are extremely happy & positive about Van Rooyen, in fact they believe he will be a very special player, however, donโ€™t expect to see him this year.

Joel Smith is currently training as a Forward, and there is growing interest in retaining Tomlinson and playing Petty as a forward.ย
ย

ย

Yep, I'd be playing Petty forward this year too. Long term he'll be a star back, but we have Tomlinson and Turner as cover.

TMac is still 6-8 weeks away, so I'd say he's just about done for the season. When that becomes known, I reckon we'll ultimately go with Petty.

JVR comes in next year and Petty goes back again.ย

It would also explain why Smith is training forward, as we'll be fully stocked with KPDs, but short in the forwardline.

You can imagine Bellโ€™s opening line. โ€œ we only want to give a kid the chance to come home and eat his mumโ€™s cooking and watch TV on the couch with his family. Heโ€™s not that great a player and might never be one. So what will you give us to take him off your hands and free up some salary cap room?โ€

As long as we hold firm with what we want, we'll win out. That's my prediction.ย

Even projecting forward. Jackson is great and will be one of the best ruckmen.ย

But I disagree about the generational player stuff.ย

And I have greater trust in our recruiters and that we will land another beauty and have greater trading power for an established gun.ย

We don't lose imo as long as we don't cave to Freo.ย

I think if Weid canโ€™t get back in the team while TMac is out and JVR is being developed this year heโ€™s probably either going to request a trade or move to another position. If LJ goes our list is light on for talls who can ruck so I donโ€™t think weโ€™d want to lose him, but heโ€™ll be behind JVR for a forward spot and would need to work hard to perfect that second ruck/forward spot (that interestingly Gawny said was his best position on Gus and Gawny last week).

I donโ€™t think his time is up, we still need talls, but with a sore Ben Brown with Petty as his competition and no TMac heโ€™s not going to get much better opportunities and heโ€™ll need to show something better than he has over the next run of weeks. If Lever is out Petty needs to play back though so Sam might get another shot.

The fact the Eagles have pick 2... or even 1 in the pre-season draft is perfect for us.

We just hold out until we get the deal we want.

If Freo come with that kind of offer, they better be ready with stuff to get it done or they look like idiots.

Marking the bloke down is a natural tendency especially if we know he is leaving.ย  We won't want him to be exceptional in those circumstances

But it's my belief that he is not necessarily gone anyway.ย  Freo still have to come to the party.ย  If not, we'll reach a stalemate

I guess the point I was trying to make was that Buddy was already elite when he got his big contact, as promising as Jackson is he's still a work in progress.

$10.3 over 8 to me equals 3 first round picks, or 2 first rounders, an early second and a player of quality. Not sure if Meek is that.

As much as I love Dogga, I also think heโ€™s lacking a certain maturity. As was I at his age and way more so!ย

If, as certain ย โ€œin the knowโ€ posters are saying, ย heโ€™s gone, then we need to get around him as a team and get the absolute best out of him NOW. He may allow himself to be distracted by it all and thatโ€™s just rubbing salt into wounds. ย Weโ€™re a chance for a flag and heโ€™s a big part of that. So i hope the team supports him and we get the absolute best out of him possible in the push fr a flag THIS year.ย

I agree but Jackson has enormous potential and a huge upside

His game against the Lions just a few weeks ago gave us a glimpse on how good he can be

If it comes to it the club should take the stance that we are selling a star ... and you never sell yourself short

ย

If the reports of 10.3 over 8 are true. this is the minimum I will be accepting from freo.

2x 1st Rounders (One being a top 5 pick) and one of Serong/Young.

retaining Tomlinson

Interesting considered language re: Tomlinson...

Edited by Engorged Onion

Future revenue streams are the unknown when it comes to big long term contracts.

For example Australian cricket is likely to get $40M a year for the Indian rights to stream Australian games played in Australia.

10 years is two broadcast deals. While times are challenging the last two broadcast deals have seen revenue growth of significant amounts.

Then there are the gambling rights

Maybe Jackson is selling himself short

Weid likely wonโ€™t go anywhere. Still has a year on his contract and there will be little interest in him if he wants a trade. Will continue to be spare parts. He still has a chance to turn things around but ย it will be an uphill battle for him.

  • PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

With both sides precariously positioned ahead of the run home to the finals, only one team involved in Sundayโ€™s clash at the Adelaide Oval between the Power and the Demons will remain a contender when itโ€™s over.ย  On current form, that one team has to be Melbourne which narrowly missed out on defeating the competitionโ€™s power house Collingwood on King's Birthday and also recently overpowered both 2024 Grand Finalists. Conversely, Port Adelaide snapped out of a four-game losing streak with a win against the Giants in Canberra. Although they will be rejuvenated following that victory, their performances during that run of losses were sub par and resulted in some embarrassing blow out defeats.

The media focus on the fieryย interaction between Max Gawn and Steven Mayย at the end of the gameย was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourneโ€™s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.
