I have feeling Jackson and Gus are gone.
Gus id be surprised about if he did end up leaving. He was here for some crappy times and now the club is better,  he’d want leave (if he does)

I feel like the contract negotiations between Jacko and the club could well be a bit linked to Gus, if Jackson is hinting that he will go then I very much doubt that Gus will go as well. However is Jackson stays, it might be a lot harder to squeeze in Gus under the cap.

I feel a lot more confident about Gus than I do Jackson. Prove me wrong Dogga!

For mine the 'Gussy Gawny' podcast is not worth listening to any more, Gussy is just having a laugh at the faithful.  I will make  an exception if they rename it Gussy the Ghost. Still, your mark and goal in the 3rd quarter of the GF will not be forgotten.

I don’t get why people think Gus is out the door?

What is that based on? Purely a delayed contract negotiation or am I missing something?

We need a top 5 pick for LJ and and given his potential another late first round or early 2nd. The points worth is not an appropriate conparison as we would most likely use the first pick to chase the best KPF available and they go early. The 2nd pick would probably look at a ruck or KPD.

As much as I’d hate to lose Brayshaw, and I don’t think he’d leave, he is in fact excess to our needs. We can cover for him at HB and on the defensive wing and in the midfield. He would also demand a 1st round pick (mid to late).

Having 2-3 1st round picks would be phenomenally good for us and allow us to restock our lists with quality players and be relevant and playing finals for the next decade.

So you’re saying to forget about winning another flag or two now by trading Brayshaw & Jacko this year & get 2-3 first round draft pics wait 3+ years and go again?

That’s very harsh on Brayshaw been in our best 3 players this year, be it half back, wing & hopefully in the coming weeks midfield, he’s not excess he’s the best player in those positions

Good clubs don’t get rid of great players & a great clubman for potential first round draft picks

We May lose Jackson but surely not both

Wants to be close to his grand parents who live in WA, according to Tim Gossage.

I have resisted but starting to feel more and more that Luke may move. One thing that seems probable is that nothing will be decided  or announced until after the season finishes.

(Headline tomorrow - “Jackson signs on for two more”)

It is not easy to build a list where the core players are coming into their peak years at the same time. We have done that. Now is not the time to build for the future. Now is the time to capitalise and win flags. This means we need to prioritise a ready made KF, and ruck depth ready to have an impact in 2023. Not draft picks, who will have an impact in 3-5 years time, when our best players have already peaked.

I think there is more likelihood of Jacko leaving if the Dees 'fizzle out' this season. If he stays, he will sign on for another 2 years. Perhaps I should wash my mouth out, but I think he's a little overrated.

I think Gus will stay.

I was just thinking the same thing! I also don't get why people are jumping at shadows with Gus, he just called a 100 year old member to wish him a happy birthday. He's the epitome of a "clubman", it's why the only reason I see him leaving is if Jackson stays in order to maximise his final contract.

Jackson makes perfect sense, he's got ties and roots in WA. He's also been involved in a premiership with the Dees (crucially involved as well) so in his mind he might well feel that he doesn't owe the club anything as he's provided that service. That said, his body language definitely is of a bloke that enjoys his time with everyone at the club.

I still think Gus is a strong chance to stay. His long term partner is Melbourne based, his parents live here, and his team is going well. I think it's just others can pay more and this is probably his "big contract" so worth considering options.

I reckon dogga is gone unfortunately. I just hope we stand strong at the trade table and don't get bullied into taking 2 late teens picks and an okay player. Jacko is probably the most valuable trade chip this season, I'd want a gun player and those two picks or there is no way he's going to Fremantle.

It does highlight the players having too much power, I don't mind players being able to declare a preferred state, but really we should be able to deal with both Perth teams Imo

Absolutely, the whole "I just really want to go home" line does tend to fall away when they then say they'll only go to a certain club. I think we're going to struggle to get a gun player out of it unless there is a multi deal with other clubs to satisfy our desires.

Freo are in a premiership window. Why would they give up their best mid and most important player for a developing ruck? That would be a really stupid move that would make them a worse side.
It just won’t happen unless Brayshaw demands a trade, which considering he’s in contract seems unlikely.

Exactly, Freo want Jackson to make their list better. Why would they give up one of their best players for him if it means they end up with a worse side?

I don't think we'll get any players back for him, at least not any that Melbourne supporters will be too enthused with. It will be draft picks but I just don't see how Freo can satisfy our requirements without shooting themselves in the foot.

When we prised Lever from the Crows they would have wanted Petracca or Oliver in return. They ended up with two mid first round picks.

I suppose i'm at an age that if a player or players want to leave a club so be it and am still of that opinion, I also understand that loyalty is not what it used to be in terms of football clubs, so with that if they want to go just get the best deal you can and move on, we will also lose some young talent because they want to play senior football not VFL every year that is the nature of the beast , the more success you have the more you have to play players to keep them and sooner or later it catches up with you, so instead of worrying about it lets see what happens at seasons end.

Gossage is a [censored].

If he'd done his research he'd know he's grandfather actually passed away not long after the 2021 grand final.

My speculation is that Jackson wants a trade to Freo, but Freo are in the same position we were last year with Cerra, that is they don’t have the draft picks to complete the deal. So that leaves a Freo player or two who would currently be in their best 22 as the trade. They are not going to be tapping blokes on the shoulder at this stage of the year, so this will be decided at seasons end

Is that his maternal grandfather, dazzle?  Ian Brayshaw is still alive and kicking at the age of 80.

This is my take on the Jacko situation.

Luke would obviously be happy to be home and if he was, he wants to play with the club he barracked for and his family is connected with. It doesn’t hurt that they are now successful. He is happy to return home, if both clubs can do a fair deal. If not, most likely he will stay with us for another 2 years and see where it’s at then.

I don’t think he is driving this or demanding to leave, but rather Freo have seen the opportunity to get him.

We hold the cards and if no deal can be done to our satisfaction, I am sure Luke will sign on for 2 more years.

I am pretty confident Freo have driven this, knowing they have a willing participant, in the right circumstances.

I think he is happy to stay for a couple of years at least, but would also be happy to return home and play with Freo and Freo probably know exactly that. He may have simply said "yes if you can get me I will come, if not I stay a Dee."

So Mr. Bell, you make us happy or he stays, end of story.

PS: Personally, I hope if he does go, players are involved, as picks are speculative and take time to turn into regular players in your best 22, if at all.

We should move them into the Melbourne home the Jackson's were going to purchase

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
