I think the really big difference to the instances above is that all of them were negotiated in the context of the Demons never winning, and had not prospect of winning a flag. Now we are the powerhouse, and the clubs most likely to offer extraordinary terms to Luke are WEST COAST and Freo, neither of which have any prospect for a flag in the next 5 years.

 

Having said that, if you are a 21 yo being offered $1m a year for the next 8 years you might consider it. If he stays we are going to have to give up key players (Brayshaw, Neill-Bullen, Fritz) none of whom I would be prepared to give up

Hold your hoses. Franklin was an established star when he signed that 10 year deal. LJ is good, but has yet to prove himself to that extent.

And Sydney have a plethora of excellent talls. They also have real cap pressures without the COLA.

There isn't one club in the league who wouldn't snap him up in a heartbeat if they could.

Very good point.  They need someone who is exciting to watch, will draw a crowd and keep the Swans in the news.  Jackson will fit the bill in a couple of years.

While Jackson's name wasn't mentioned commentators were talking about the next Sydney drawcard.  Heeney is a star and the most likely but they said he isn't 'big' with a commanding presence.  Will any of their 'big' guys develop a commanding presence; it was thought unlikely.  But then what would commentators know.

Nonetheless, Jackson would fit their bill.  On the verge of being a superstar.  You now have me worried.  I had no fear of the WA clubs but Sydney are a different kettle of fish.  Buddy is likely to play at least another year. 

A 5 year contract for Jackson to his RFA year now seems much more preferable than just 2 or 3 years.  It will keep all clubs at bay.

Well at the end of the 2022 season he's going to have a Coleman, a second premiership and he and Trac will have a Brownlow each, so that'll be a pretty good CV, if he feels he wants to go home after that, he's earned it. 

Send him to Freo and grab Hayden Young and and a first rounder

Send him to Eagles, two first rounder minimum

Or ideally keep him

Unless another team has a Max Gawn to share the load, Luke is not going anywhere as a franchise player. He's not ready yet.

Luke will develop slowly and nicely with us until he finds his best position and role. Let's leave him alone and not indulge in these wild speculations.

I very much doubt this comment is unfounded. For Goody to come out and say this when that wasn't the case would be a huge mistake, and I trust Goody isn't silly enough to do that. 

It would seem to make sense for Jackson and the Club to agree on a 2 year deal. That’s assuming Luke wants to stay. It seems improbable the either party would want a long-term deal. Luke because he would want to keep his options open and the Club due to salary cap pressures.  It’s a delicate balance. After another 2 years there may be further room for movement, maybe not.

It’s would be terrible to lose Luke as it would be to lose any of our stars when their contracts expire. The thought of Oliver or Petracca in opposition jumpers would be real heart sink stuff. 

However, the Hawks lost Buddy and were able to maintain their list and reap further premiership rewards. How the Club manages all these complexities will be crucial to longer term success and the health of our playing group.

If you look at the contracts thread I think it’s a safe bet that the club is looking further ahead than just the next two years. Other factors worth considering are

- Players that have already had their “payday contracts”.

- Players  such as TMac, Gawn and I think Lever who have recently extended their contracts and you would assume have extended for less after already cleaning up.

- Players such as Hibberd and Melksham who are most likely in their last season. 

- Young players such as Rivers, Kozi, Petty and Bowey who are all premiership players and bloody good players in their own right but will have to bide their time for their paydays.

 I don’t think we have much to worry with those 3 they wont be getting to much interest by any struggling teams with cash to burn as they won’t help that sort of side.

Biggest danger are the players who we drafted in 2020 or earlier who haven’t found a spot yet

Next would be the types like Sparrow and Jordan if they want more time in the middle and think they can be more than a roll player

I forgot what Howe brought us but Frawley leaving brought us Brayshaw.

Exactly he is still a WIP and whilst he has a huge upside nothing is set in stone. He has the best possible mentor available at his disposal and would be wise to develop his craft  some more under the guidance of Big Max.

3 year deal total 1.8 - 2 M should get it done.
