No more apologising

I'm sure I'm not the only one in this boat, but for me, one of the best things about winning this premiership is that I will no longer feel the need to apologise to my kids for influencing them to become Melbourne supporters.  I've seen their pain, especially of my oldest son (now 19), and to be honest, there have been times that I've felt absolutely wretched about leading them to fall in love with the MFC.

But now, instead of me feeling the need to apologise, we will forever have the memory of hugging, high 5-ing, and even shedding a few tears on Saturday night.  We have a video that one of my younger kids took of our reaction when Clarry kicked that last goal of the now legendary third quarter.   As a parent, it was a very, very special evening.  We now want to be able to experience it live for oursleves at the G.

In the long run, they should thank you @S_T, for providing a character building life lesson that good things don't always come easily.

I was going to say that only waiting 15 or so years to taste this sucess, they have had it easy compared to most of us, but the first 10 or so of those years would have been pretty depressing.   

Having followed the team closely since 87, at least the first 15 years or so of my time following the club always held some potential promise of an imminent premiership (Even though that never came) and by the time we'd last made finals in 2006, I was already welded on.

My son wouldn't of had it any other way and never complained.  I still felt sorry though.

After the relative success of 2018, 2019 and most of 2020 were particularly painful.

I am already. In my Whats App group with my old school mates who are predominantly Carlton I already got the how long are we going to have to put up with this. I told them that technically whilst we are the reigning premiers but I'll go easy on them and ease up come Round 1.

They all know the pain I've been through so they're letting me have my moment. Privately they're shitting themselves that they are already old me.

When my sister, a Hawthon supporter, had kids i gave each one of them a Melbourne guernsey. None of them really got into the footy, and still don't today.

When my brother had kids, I did the same. My brother isn't what you would call a die hard fan, but this year footy became a bit of relief from the drudgery of Covid. His 6 year old daughter would often sit and watch the footy with him if it was in the right time slot.

My niece has not taken off her Melbourne jumper since Sunday, and is so proud to be a Dee's supporter. My brother thanked me for getting her a jumper with Trac's number, however my sister reminded him it was a hand me down from one of her kids. She also reminded me that when i gave it to my nephew I told her it was the number of a future captain of the MFC, Brock Maclean. No wonder they didn't get into the footy!

What is great about the win is that a whole new generation of kids will be proud to wear our colours. My niece is already pestering me to take her to her first footy game.

Yep, i had a little kid yesterday who was 5-6 come up to me on his bike, yelling “Go Demons” i had my scarf on  It was fantastic. 
I noticed it a bit this year. Kids want to win. We must keep this wave going to get new generation supporters

I'm the same as most others. 3 kids (all now adults) ... all Demons' supporters. They had no choice. I think only one of them ever asked "why do we have to barrack for Melbourne?" The Bailey/Neeld years were the worst.

Needless to say, 3 very, very happy Demons!! (4 including me). 

For once, not too hard to pick out Xmas presents for them this year.

I’ve never felt bad and I saw the 1981 year which only one point stopped us from having a winless season.

Dad got the 50’s/60’s premiership years, I got wooden spoons galore, merge talk, 2 record beltings and tanking. Had to wait until my 40’s to see a premiership. Well worth it. I don’t chose a team on when they win a premiership. If I did, I’d have a new team nearly every year. 

A few of my nieces/nephews were on the verge of changing teams. I bought them demons gear and took them to games. They continued to demons while all their prospective teams win premierships. Don’t regret it at all. They needed to learn that it’s not just about winning

If you spent time in the change rooms when a team is getting beaten and beaten badly each week the players lose faith in their ability and some even question whether it is worth playing.

I remember one year Ray Biffen was injured and was asked when he would return and his answer was 'if we win this week I will be playing next week because we are a chance to make the finals otherwise not agian this year'.

That is why players with injuries in the later part of the year go for early operations when a team has no hope of playing in the finals.

Friends with Premiership are no longer able to lord over my previous non-Premiership status over me but once the new season starts I would like to think I’ll be a little more humble just in case this was an aberration year. Too soon?

My youngest son is 9 and really only started getting in to footy and getting behind the Dees this year.

A bit like the players, like Trac, who say they can’t remember the dark times because they weren’t there, my son may never experience the shame of being a Melbourne supporter. I happened to be 9 years old, the same age he is now, in 1993 when the MFC got done by the hapless Swans for their only win in a truly terrible year for them. I went home in tears after the merciless ribbing I received. I can’t remember much about footy back then but I clearly remember that.

Nobody will be laughing when my boy wears his Melbourne gear to footy colours day next year. I’m so proud.
