Was the comment incorrect.

Yes.

"he is needed on our list we have no other tall forward" - well that's obviously incorrect.

"Lets be honest, TMac hasn't been any good for the last 12 odd weeks" - in the last 12 weeks TMac has kicked 3 goals each against the Bulldogs, Brisbane and Port Adelaide, and had a 22 possession + 10 mark game vs GWS where the only thing missing was accurate goal kicking.

"the start of the season amazing but has fallen away" - yes he was kicking more goals at the start of the season but his relative form slump coincided with the entire side slumping somewhat in the first few weeks post-bye.

"B Brown isn't really setting the world on fire kicking some goals but yet to really have an outstanding game" - Brown's kicked multiple goals for five straight games, has had at least 5 marks in each of those games, and importantly has lifted his tackling and pressure numbers across that period

"M Brown isn't getting any younger" - sure, but Weideman also "isn't getting any younger"

"Daw isn't a forward" - probably the only part of the post I agree with.

Of course, the overall point you're making in general doesn't take into account our forward line as a unit, ignores Fritsch's presence (he was just named to the AA squad FFS), and ignores Weideman's struggles with form when in the seniors this year.

I will give you your first one, poorly worded we do have other key Tall Forwards, my comment should have been added outside the current side.  M Brown has been injured for a while and I doubt will be on the list next season.

On Toms form I will stand by this, I don't think he out side a couple of games has had the same impact he had in the first half of the season and has gone missing for large chunks of games.

B Brown, yep he is kicking a couple of goals, he will need to do a lot more over the next month.

Your comment about Fritsch, he would have the same role if Weiderman played, he needs keys around him to allow him to play that hit up role, he still kicked average 2 goals a game for the 5 matches Weiderman played this year.

The discussion is on whether Weiderman should stay on our list, my opinion is yes as we need depth in KPF for injury and form.  Will he get a game over the next month I hope not as it means we have injuries at the wrong time of the year, but I would like to see him get a full pre-season in, put the pressure on TMac and Brown to work hard for their spots, it only makes us better if he can take a step forward, but it does high light the need to get another developing tall Forward on our list.

The basic trouble is that if we trade Weideman out, we'll be in serious need of new young key forwards in a few years as McDonald and Brown both get older.

On the other hand, will Weideman even fill that need? I like him, but I was up very close to him for a lot of the game against Collingwood up in Sydney and had an eye on him... and was very disappointed.

Interestingly, the tall prospects in this year's draft don't seem to appear until the late teens/early 20s. I feel like if we could get a package trade that saw us enter the draft with a pick around 15 we'd have our choice of the season's talls, if Taylor has a special in mind. Hell, we could even just take Mac Andrew.

We have Tomlinson.....

If we packaged Weid with our future 1st Round pick and a few other items (potentially the likes of Bailey Laurie, this year's 2nd Round pick etc), what are the chances of getting a hold of Gold Coast's 1st Rounder? Would get us access to Mac Andrew who we should rightfully have access to!

Unlikely I know, but I don't want to see us miss out on this kid!

You'd trade out Bailey Laurie? Our 2nd pick from last year?

Mitch Cleary just said that Sam Weideman is looking at his options but there seem to be little interest out there.

The way he played this season, he was in the delistable category anyway.

Think about it. How excited would you be if it was us he was coming to? You'd be thinking the football department had lost the plot..

Weid can get his hands on the ball, which is the first requirement, unfortunately he can't hold his marks. He seems to me to have his palms both facing out in front of him, towards the ball and slaps at the ball instead of grabbing it.

It will come together for him but it may be too late.

Jessie Hogan had the same technique. I haven’t seen many successful forwards who mark flat handed.

I'd be happy to do the trade provided we could land a reasonable replacement in a similar age bracket to cover for McDonald and Brown when they retire. I reckon Brown gets through 2 or 3 more years comfortably, but not so sure about McDonald. He's so hot and cold that he's so hard to predict.

I reckon he'll sign on for another 2 years until free agency kicks in then re evaluate his affairs like most players are doing these days.

i'd be flabbergasted if it went any other way tbh, particularly given how insecure our KPF spots really are, we could easily be sitting here in 12 months time after weid has had a 30 goal season after breaking in after round 8 and tmac is a washed up 30yo about to embark on some 1 year depth contracts, you just never know in foopy, but i think the lure of potentially playing in a GF over the next two years should be enough to convince him to stay until FA then decide

Agreed. If I were Weid I’d be circling both Brown and Tmac like a salivating hyena. Both those guys are ripe for a long term injury/age catching up on them. It’s not a perfect spot to be as a developing player but it’s the next best thing - learning your craft at a good club with a strong young side that has no other competition for your spot beside the two old blokes ahead of you.

Least I’m not the only one concerned by Laurie and what has (or hasn’t) been shown to date. First year I get it but usually you see something worth working on. By all accounts Laurie hasn’t set the world on fire in any matches played so far. Hope I am wrong.

We traded our first rounder this year for him.

Weideman to North would be a good idea. We'll get the first pick of the second round.

He’s been injured for a lot of the season and VFL not playing - harsh assessment

In an incredibly challenging year he has missed around 6-7 weeks with a significant facial injury and then landed himself a shoulder injury. Hard to judge anyone based on that form exposure. When he has played he has done ok by all accounts.

Much of year 2 injured then the joke of a second tier competition hasn’t played much of the year.

Can Weid play as a defender?

Would he be any good in that role?

Maybe on that basis worth keeping.

I would love seeing Petty at Chf at some stage. Reckon he would crush it.

Lol, no we won’t.

@faultydetis spot on - imagine that Sam is at another club and we are targeting him? You’d think the FD was on the turps. Especially if we are giving a 2nd rounder.

Laurie has had 2 injury absences this year and I don't think looking at him he has a natural fitness base say like Bowey.

Needsa good preseason and will be on his way.

There  are no guarantees and I haven't seen him play live and can't remember him in the couple of TV games of Casey.

Rosman Will also be a big improver I Believe and we  must keep Declase and Turner as great potential.

Yep, that's an eyebrow-raising suggestion that I'm not even sure is permitted under the rules.

Let me clarify my position/suggestion on this one.

I'm not saying that I don't rate Laurie or that he's a spud that we should get rid of. I'm simply making the point that if we want Mac Andrew, we'll need to trade into the top 10, probably top 8. Gold Coast currently have Pick 5 which will turn into Pick 7 and we have a good trading history with them, so they're an obvious potential partner.

Now would Weideman and our future 1st Round Pick be enough to get the trade done? Given we're currently top of the ladder, it's fair for Gold Coast to assume our Future 1st Round Pick will be in the 15-20 range. So point is we'll likely need more.

Laurie will still have some value from being a late 1st Round Pick from last year, who doesn't hurt us leaving as he's yet to get on the park for us. I did also suggest our Pick 34 could a also be used instead. Laurie was merely one suggestion.

It's also of note that we got Laurie by trading away our 1st Round Pick from this year, before the rules changed re the Academy nominations and our ability to get Mac Andrew. Would we have made that trade last year if we knew the rule change was coming? Who knows? All I can tell is that Taylor seems pretty keen on Mac Andrew and I wouldn't be shocked to see the Dees try and manufacture a way to get him.

Edit: And yes, players can be traded after only one season. Just rarely happens is all.

I thought that myself Picket, but I have to admit Smith’s recent form as a defender has been good. Still behind a number of players but he’s improved a lot compared to where he was as a defender. I don’t think we’ve seen him do one stupid attempt at MOTY the games he’s played this year.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started.
