Sheesh, talk about gifting the cats an armchair ride into the prelim. I dearly want him to get off to play against them but honestly i reckon this should be 6 weeks plus. This guy costs his team time and again… he’s brilliant but not a team player is he. Toby is All about Toby. In fact  If i were the Giants i’d trade him and get a cpl of first rounders. You can’t grow a bonded team around this [censored].

Without Toby Cats win.  We have and can beat the Cats in the Prelim especially after a rest for us and no rest for them.

When you see it in real time and live, as I did watching the game, my immediate subconscious reaction - tha's a week out.  All other angles and footage and commentary by the media is just spin. Its amazing how many in themedia/past player cohort just sit on the fence on this and don't do their media role objectively - as Nick reiwoldt does (a real media asset on Kayo IMO)

On the Cats, I agree Lucifer with you that the cats can be rolled by us for sure in two weeks. Mainly because I just can't see our defence weakening in any area.

My main conern going into finals was the GWS midfield. May now not eventuate

The feeling in the media and social media has a similar feeling to the incident that Jack Viney was involved in.

There is no doubt that the sitting tribunal members will closely monitor this feedback in order to have some measured response - love it or hate it, i think it makes sense.

The punishment is what will be interesting. Remember people were calling for 6 weeks for Viney. Given Greene's record, i think there will be an enhancement of the suspension.

There are 9 offences which go straight to the tribunal without a plea… Greene has done two! Eye gouging and umpire contact.

Whether or not Toby touched the umpire, he was intimidating. I have thought for some years that the AFL is unique in major sporting codes in allowing players to abuse umpires re decisions made. A good example was Mitch Robinson abusing the umpire in the last quarter of Saturday’s game. I reckon umpires should shut this behaviour down by awarding free kicks/50 metre penalties against the offenders. Watch behaviour change! Mild remonstration ok - abuse not, in my humble opinion.

It’s totally unacceptable.  Two weeks minimum.  [censored]. [censored]. [censored].

2 weeks? 12. The message had to be sent that under no circumstances is this acceptable. Lower leagues struggle to get umpires as it is without every [censored] 14 year old thinking it’s cool to act like that to an ump. Hell my dad got a week off in the VFA for calling an ump a white maggot. Harsh maybe but also necessary. Things like this are very thin of the wedge stuff.

All that said I have zero faith in the AFL putting the good of the game over next weeks ratings

He can play but he’s a thug, he’s got history of lashing out against authority figures when things don’t go his way. He’s trying to stand over and intimidate the ump in this instance, a $2500 fine and no conviction won’t surface this time.

18.8.2 Free Kicks - Umpires
A field Umpire shall award a Free Kick against a Player or Official who:
(a) uses abusive, insulting, threatening or obscene language towards an Umpire;
(b) behaves in an abusive, insulting, threatening or obscene manner towards an Umpire;
(c) intentionally, unreasonably or carelessly makes contact with an Umpire;
(d) disputes a decision of an Umpire;
(e) fails to follow the instruction of an Umpire; or
(f) intentionally or carelessly engages in conduct which affects, interferes with or prevents an Umpire from performing their duties.

Not "might", not "at their discretion" ... SHALL.

The remedy is right there in the rule book. Why the umps pick and choose which rules to enforce beats me. Further evidence that successive umpires' directors have taken their eye off the ball.

Non-consensus but gws win without Greene anyway.

The Cats have kicked 7 goals in 6 quarters. They are a dysfunctional unit right now with ball in hand, so risk averse. Watch the tension level on their faces rise if they are down a few goals early.

Straight sets!

Why are so many players, commentators and general public defending it? You cant touch an umpire, especially in an aggressive tone regardless of who did it.

And why are none of there colleagues calling them out on it?

Not just Toby who could be out, as Tom Green, Cumming and Reid are definite outs.

Though Daniels, Finlayson and O'Halloran could be available.

I agree with this.

I heard Gerard Whateley's opening on his radio show this morning. He said something about how people in the AFL industry/media who had tried defending Greene were wrong to do so, but I didn't hear him name anyone in particular. That might be because most/all of those who have defended him are his colleagues on either Fox or SEN.

We have Luke Hodge, who in the post-match interview tried to lead Greene into saying it was an accident.

Justin Leppitscsh blamed Stevic for not getting out of Greene's way.

Nick Riewoldt (I believe) said he wanted to "fly the flag" for Greene.

Kane Cornes says Greene should be fine unless Stevic effectively rats him out, putting the pressure on the umpire (in this case the victim).

Matthew Richardson thinks it should be a fine only.

There are also current players defending him, including Petracca (I can't read the Herald Sun article but apparently it's here), as well as Pendlebury and Taylor Adams. That's slightly more understandable given what we know about the all-important player's code.

Some/all of the above may have said what they said without seeing the side angle camera footage which removes any debate over whether there was contact or not. But having seen the footage which shows obvious contact, if you still think this isn't worthy of a multi-week suspension, you are contributing to a cultural problem within the AFL which will only serve to increase the horrendous standard of AFL umpiring (i.e. if we don't take a strong stance to protect umpires at the elite level, we'll struggle to get better umpires into the system).

I was listening to SEN (I think) and the comment was that this type of thing is a 6 week ban in the lower leagues, so the AFL needs to put a message out if they are serious about the fact that intentionally making contact with an umpire is an absolute no go.
Agree with the previous comment from one of the people here that if it was one of the female umps, or imagine it happening to a junior is a lower league, there would be outrage.

I would hope that the GWS are furious with Green internally, and TBH they should plead guilty and move on, that is their best chance of a 2 week fine. If they plead not guilty here I reckon the tribunal will go harder. Green chose to walk and talk to Stevic at the break and was fired up, there is absolutely no way that encounter was anything other than intentional regardless of the contact.  I love Green as a footballer, and I honestly think without him, GWS are going to struggle against Geelong, but thats no excuse for what he did, and he's cost his team a great shot at getting through to a prelim I reckon.

Did hawkins cop a 1 weeker for putting his arm up and touching an umpire in a semi aggressive manner?

Toby walked straight at the umpire and purposely made contact with the shoulder. There has to be a week at a minimum for the incident but to me Toby seems to be a bit worse.

I really like Toby Greene as a player - he is an out and out superstar and as a PLAYER i would love to have him in our side,

BUT

I would not want him near our current team for what he COULD do to the culture.

In this case, I CANNOT, and I want to write it in double bolded CAPITALS, CANNOT fathom how anybody can possibly try to defend what he did.

He bumped an umpire, walked straight at him when he had many chances to go around him, all while upset that a free was reversed when he elbowed an opponent in the throat (unsure when that has happened recently and the uproar of that???).

He should get 6 weeks in my books.

I would also love to see what sort of response from these so called experts and players would be saying if it was Zach Sproule or someone of his standard and experience!!! They would probably accept his punishment and want to set an example, but not when it is a gun player in a big final!

I think you are right.  What really gets up my nose is the TV commentator immediately saying it looked like Toby was just going to one of his mates or something similar.  Instantly finding excuses for a star player when blind freedy could see he was in deep discussion with the umpire and had no regard to his team mates at all.  Typical.

They weren't exactly chasing up Daisy Pearce for her views either (ch 7). It was all mansplaining by the boys.

Two to four weeks...not six. Four being preferable.

As well as an apology.

He will definately get suspended. The afl has nowhere to hide.

What will be interesting is what toby's club will do.

If they try and defend him so as to play in the upcoming final the optics will be just as bad.

Say what you will about our sporting cousins in Rugby League, but they are all over us when it comes to referee (umpire) respect.

Even in the country leagues the players call the ref "sir" when approaching them. And there is almost zero abuse such as we saw from Mitch Robinson as it results in penalties.

I know some will think I've become all soft and woke but it's something I really would like to see creep into AFL football at all levels.

When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50.
