Played one game this year.ย  Two sets of surgery on his back.ย  30 years of age.ย  Still contracted until end 2022.

Why do people think Hawthorn is willing to let him go? If he was serviceable, they would be keeping him next year.ย

Lewis, Hodge, Bruest were all useful inย  young teams which needed leadership.ย  Now that those teams are contenders you don't need those types any more.

We don't need to be doing the Hawks any favours.

birchall has been fantastic for the bears who are now an experience-laden and finals-focused team in their post-hodge iteration

Gunston is having a zoom meeting with Melbourne next week. (According to Ricky Nixon).

ย

A back surgeon who I saw said โ€œnever have your first back operation as it wonโ€™t be your lastโ€.

After two back operations - if actual ๐Ÿ”ช๐Ÿฅย operations and not injections or similar procedures - at 29 a big no from me.ย

All this speculation about Gunstonโ€™s back surgeries just highlights to me howย speculation is soย often used toย fit a preferred narrative. There are a number of reasons to have back surgery, some will have the legacy of significant functional limitation,ย some wonโ€™t, but need extended time in rehabilitation, 6-12 months kind of time. If Gunston is up for more football, itโ€™s because heโ€™s in the latter category. How many ACLย reconstructions has Max Gawn had? How many shoulder surgeries for Clarry? Tracc ruptured his ACL in his first season at MFC. Harry Petty missed anย entire season with groin issues, having missed 2/3 of the previousย season. Jack Viney has hisย feet, butย where is he sitting now? Jayden Huntโ€™s season was โ€˜doneโ€™ based on ignorant speculation 3 weeks ago. He could very wellย be back next week.ย All the issues theseย players have hadย have been assuredly confirmed on here (at various times) as beingย liabilities to their future playing success. If weย donโ€™t know, and we donโ€™t, then Iโ€™d suggest a calmer, less certainย approach to the speculation.ย

Not a firm no but edging that way. Can see him offering something elsewhere. Hard to find these types.

This bloke is a seriously good footballer, has leadership qualities, and plays well in big moments or big games. We would be madย not to at least talk to him. However, we don't desperately need his type so I wouldn't make his acquisition a high priority.

His age is an issue considering the age of some of our current forwards.

Lots of speculation about injuries. Isย this a Dan Hannebury to the Saints or a Stevie J to GWS? If he is the right player you have to take the risk to find out.ย

ย

I see both arguments here. However, there are very few players who have the footballing smarts of Jack Gunston. Whenever we've played against him, I can't help but watch how he goes about it.ย Normally I'd not want a player of his age and injury profile but a fit (there's the rub) and firing Gunston would be hard to say no to. He'd be a terrific mentor to younger players working on their craft and certainlyย the nous to move into a forward coaching role should Yze move on.

Iโ€™m not sure why the angst. He would cost us literally peanuts and would replace a Mitch Brown. Itโ€™s a win win even if itโ€™s not.ย

When Tommo is back we do have the option to put Petty forward. But I agree our key position players are mostly on the wrong side of 29. Which is why Iโ€™m very strong on keeping Weideman.ย

Would love to see Petty up fwd.

A fit Gunston is a quality player / team player and seems to be a very good leader.ย  He would be an excellent addition to our list, so long as it doesn't compromise our tight salary cap position, either now or for the 2 or 3 year contract that he would be seeking (presumably we would requireย some 'performance' clauses in there to safeguard our side of the deal).ย  Clearly our Club is well placed to make a call on all this.

Youโ€™d have to imagine Weed has told the club he is exploring options.ย

gunston wouldย be a good back up tall fwd although not like for like

Itโ€™s gonna happen, deever!ย Maybe not next year, but soon enough. Not to diminish his defensive work, heโ€™s fabulous, but Iโ€™m perhapsย stupidly confident heโ€™sย gonna do a David Neitzโ€ฆ.

Yep, Daw & M. Brown played a combined total of 1 game.

If Weid is off we may see Petty up forward and then Gunston probably next in line?

Would be good insurance policy provided the deal is right and also if body is right.

We're likely losing the messiah Burgo so need to be a little cautious.

Hawks were rumoured to want a high first round pick for him from Collingwood last year.ย

This year Hawks are looking to boost their draft hand and generally want top 25 picks.

Tell em theirย dreaming.

Since when do players in their 30s command 1st round or even mid second round draft picks?

Maybe if included within a pick swap, which in effect sees the team picking him up only slip back a few places, but even then it would be a dud deal in my eyes.

The only club that has traded away high picks for aging, injured players of late is Hawthorn and just look at where that has got them.

If we could pick him up for a pick in the 50s like we did Lewis, then I'd say go for it absolutely.ย  But I'm not sure that Hawthorn are in the same position to be wanting to do that now.ย  To be honest, I'd have thought they would want to hang onto him pretty badly to help develop some of their own youth around.

Agree.

There's many types of back surgery from laminectomy (I've had one) through to fusion.ย  All back surgeries are definitely not equal.

Maybe it will next year. With Adam T back in and Smith doing well than he may well be trialled at chf.

According to one of the Hawthorn Instagram accounts 3-4 days ago, Gunston requested a trade in his exit interview. The same/next day, our alleged interest breaks in the media. Interesting...

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmyโ€™s inclusive bannerโ€”"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwoodโ€™s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.ย

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecastโ€”20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze โ€” expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kateโ€™s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwoodโ€™s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.
