I’ve kept quiet on here since I joined - the nuances of the modern game are so far removed from what I grew up with in early 60’s Melbourne that I feel under-qualified  to comment in depth - but I truly believe our time has come. I fell in love with the Demons back then, I was there in ‘64 and I’ll be shouting at my tv with the rest of you here in England.  Finals start tomorrow and it’s our time folks.

Love this comment. That's about how I feel (including the bit about often feeling under-qualified to comment) Good luck to you (and to us all)

I’m quietly confident about tonight.  We are slowly getting back to our best, and our best is better than anyone else has shown this season.  Just NO injuries please!

Wow. This is foreign. Whatever I say cannot summarize how I feel.

For the 33 years I’ve been a Demon, I’ve never been in a position where it’s been us at the pointy end of the ladder with one week to go. This is truly surreal.

A lot of the old timers will now how this feels, but I have a bad case of ‘impostor syndrome’; as though this is the type of thing that happens to supporters from other clubs. It not supposed to happen to our club.

Hopefully this isn’t the mindset of the players.

With that being established as dominating my psyche, I just struggle to say we will win.

A Geelong supporting mate said he felt similar in ‘07. All year long, he kept waiting for them to do ‘Geelong things’ which never eventuates. I’ve sat through too many false dawns to say that we can win, but empirical evidence has contradicted me so far.

So I’m not going to predict a winner. Superstition isn’t something to base your beliefs around, but I feel as soon as I get my hopes too high, they get torn down.

And trust me, the [censored] we play tonight have been doing so since I first saw Gary Ablett Sr. tear us a new one in 1989 in the qualifying final that year.

there are no crowds tonight Right??

The one thing to look forward to while I wait to hear if my husband is out of work (as are all his employees) for the foreseeable future due to further lockdowns.

Can’t say this game is at the forefront of my mind but I am really hoping we can win and bring a much needed bit of joy to many Melbourne supporters stuck in Covid hell.

Melbourne now Fav on all betting platforms. The betting means little but I do expect Melbourne to crush Geelong tonight.

A few reasons why I don’t think this is a dead rubber at all.

Firstly, winning form is important.

Secondly, I don’t want to play Port in Adelaide next week.

Thirdly, the AFL will let the side who finishes 1st pick whether they play their QF on Friday or Saturday. I reckon if we get 1st we’ll ask for the Saturday as the Friday would mean a third consecutive six day break. If we lose, we’re giving that choice up and I can see Geelong taking the Sat and Port getting the Friday, and an extra day’s break.

Hopefully tommahawk can keep his elbow away from May's eye tonight.

I have no idea what to expect tonight, but gee it would be fantastic to see us finish the season on top after only a few weeks ago. I just want no injuries.

I just want to finish on top. I know it’s meaningless, it’s not the goal, rah rah. I just think it’s a nice little nod for consistently being the best team across the season. Then we can move on to working towards the bigger and better prize.

I think our 3 inclusions show that Goody is serious when he says he wants to keep winning to establish that winning mindset.

I don't think we'll be holding anything back tonight

I usually feel exactly the same.

Something had changed. We are the real deal now. We can beat anyone, anywhere and have shown our best form against the best teams.

We are finally primed to win a flag and for the first time in my life I can actually see it happening.

I understand how you feel, Jaded.  At least the team has given us something to distract us from ‘real life’ for a while, mostly in a good way.  Good luck with what lies ahead for you and your husband.

Yep. I reckon selection was bold. I think it would have been “safe” to keep Melksham and Hibberd and drop Sparrow and Smith - in fact it’s what I suggested in the changes thread. Goody is all in, hopefully the team is too.

The waiting game is over. There’s one more win to go before we reach the summit.

Bring it on!

Not quite WJ.

We win today and finish on top and it's like we've reached that last little peak before the final accent to the summit.

As much as I'm itching for the game today and would love us to finish on top, in my mind, we are still only strong qualifiers for the ultimate prize.

Really hope this team has the physical and mental toughness to clutch the oppertunity that awaits us in the comming month.  Everything I've seen so far this year says we are watching the Melbourne team most likely to go on and claim that illusive flag.

Really hope that everything comes together for team over this last month and we can totally dominate the opposition along the way and put it all beyond doubt - starting with today.

I want them to smash Geelong so they don't come back

I want the score to embarrass them

Go Dees

It’s truly exciting.  Tonight is like a final.  It’s the battle for the minor premiership.  We’ve never had this chance in my lifetime.

Normally its winning this game to stay out of the bottom 4 or should we lose and get better draft picks or god knows what thread is the best to read?

No. Not this time. This is what weve all been fighting for since Demonland started. 1.8 million posts later and here we are.

Smash these Cats into next week. Take the title of top team tonight.

Lets go Dees.

the smart move is to lose tonight and most of us know it. I'm sure Geelong's coach does.

(Assuming a Brisbane win).

And end up playing Port at Adelaide Oval? Don't think so mate...

Definitely not a dead rubber now, need to avoid the away trip to Port. I would also love this to be a statement game as well, I just think back to that game at KP in 2018 where they got the win after the siren. That place just has so many bad memories, it would be great to have a happy memory added this year.

FWIW the cats haven’t been in great form of late and I think if we bring our beat we beat them no matter what the venue.

Does that happen tonight? Not sure.

Hey GBDee. The fact you are able to critically self reflect is the characteristic that possibly disqualifies you from sharing on this forum . . . not your perceived removal from the nuances of the modern game. Thanks for your wonderful contribution. QD.

Come on down Jack Viney.

If ever we need you at your best the next few weeks are it.

You too Tmac.

4 wins Demons

that is the mindset

Whoever it is, wherever it is played

It’s 4 wins, get the job done

Work with each other. Challenge each other

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
