ATM, Sparrow better option than Jordon, just.

I'm not sure in what world Sparrow's a better option than Jordon at the moment.

Jordon is heaps cleaner by hand and seems to make more decisive decisions from what I've seen over the course over the year.

I probably do agree with the upside bit, Sparrow has a bit of explosiveness we haven't seen much of yet.

Just my opinion but I don’t think Jordon is any cleaner than Sparrow, also Jordon doesn’t seem to be able to move the ball on from a mark/free all that quickly.

I haven’t check the stats but I would say Jordon has had far more opportunity than Sparrow , who has been Sub numerous times this year.

JJ's been far cleaner by hand, his quick hands have been the best part of his game. I agree that he's slow to use the ball from kick/mark situations, but that's only a few times a game.

But the biggest difference between them is JJ has now proven himself to be useful enough of a wing but I don't think Sparrow has.

Unless the coaches want to rotate Harmes through the wing I think JJ remains the more likely option to stay in the side.

To the bye mark for the season, JJ was 6th in the comp for tackles. He's demonstrated he's an excellent decision maker and beautifully clean below his feet and by hand generally. Strange take, but each to their own.

One has played pretty much all year in the top side in the comp and been a vital part of the engine room, and another has been on the fringes of the side. There's no doubt JJ seems to have tired though and his influence on games in the second half of the season has been minimal. But Tom has struggled this year in the 1s. Doesn't mean he won't make it, but he's significantly behind JJ for mine.

Hard to know what job Sparrow has. But he was poor again today. Three free kicks against won't endear him to the selectors.

Has some pace, doesn't mind mixing it and has decent skills. Maybe just needs confidence?

Will make way for Viney next week.

Unfortunately that will be the case.

I like Sparrow, seems like an honest battler with no major weaknesses, developing nicely.

But I have no idea what his strengths are. He doesn't seem to have stand out attributes, rather be a generally good foot solider.

Maybe that's what he'll be: a reliable contributor over the journey who never truly owns his position, but does enough to hold his spot on the list as he makes his way to 150 games?

I think he’s an inside mid….bullish, and with a good first 5 metre ‘charge’. Good hands, big kick but pretty squiffy yesterday, just needs more games and confidence that comes with it. As you say, deanox, will never be the primary selection, but will toil and become reliable, I’ve no doubt.

Disagree.

Just have a look at that kick from Sparrow late in the game straight to a Crow. That is a problem. Also an inability to break free from contests.

I am not knocking Tom as he will improve but JJ is ahead of him easily ATM.

I dont mind Sparrow. Cracks in and gives it a red hot go. Had 7 tackles yesterday. But his disposal was poor, and we cannot afford to have these little basic errors in finals.

He'll go out for Viney where as Jordon will stay.

Agree, Viney will return this week, which means one has to go - and it's got to be Sparrow. Sparrow has shown some talent, but Jordon stays due to cohesion of the team, his body of work over the year and he's safer with the ball.

Sparrow is strong in the contest and his handballs and kicking is strong.  Just needs to fix up his skill by foot and some decisions.  Was tracking ok and then got 4-5 weeks as sub with no matches at Casey.  Has taken time to readjust.
Sparrow or Jordon probably make way for Viney next week.

This is why I think Bowey has made such an impression.  He has lots of qualities that Sparrow has, who I think is a great tackler, but Bowey is a excellent disposer of the ball and that quality stands out against many others in the team.

Sparrow and Vanders have a lot in common - hard at it but caught with ball too often and turns it over. Sparrow is a better kick when in the clear but most of his disposals are under pressure.

Sparrow reminds me a lot of Brent Moloney.

I think that they share similar attributes, hardness, have pace and can kick long. Beamer would be a good role model for Tom. I think that JJ has more sublime skills and his distribution by hand when in the middle is always to our advantage. Great pair of tough kids that can and do play a role in a top side and I hope they both make it for us.

He wasn't alone in kicking the ball straight to a Crow's player.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
