To all those people who are saying on Facebook that his wife can give birth and he doesn’t need to be there, unless you’re joking, shame on you

Gutted for him. Gutted for Dees fans. Very happy for him and his wife.

As the team developed under Goodwin, and this year unfolded the way it has, I have had 1 image in my mind I want to see come GF day: Nathan Jones holding up the cup. This image would embody my long years of withered hopes, crowned  by a player who I loved watching, and respected as a great club man.

Not to be.

Some fairytales are haunted by shadows and disappointments.

It is often said that a person's true character is revealed when the chips are down, not when times are good. This finals campaign is clearly bittersweet for Chunk, who would love as an individual to be part of the 22, but who also embodies the 'team first' mantra. Faced with a difficult decision like this, he has decided to be with his family, despite that meaning it will snuff out any (admittedly small) chance of playing in a Grand Final (and unlike our last two attempts, starting as favourite). True to what is right until the end, no matter what the individual cost --- which is nothing other than exactly what we have come to expect from him. If this is the end, then it is true to the red-and-blue heart beat that he has always shown. Take a bow, Nathan Jones.

If we do happen to win the GF. I’d love to see the club beam a live feed of Chunk to the big screen during the presentation, so he can at least be involved in some way.

Jonesy has been and will forever be remembered as the ultimate team-first player, but there can be no doubting this decision. He is clearly a strong family man and his place is by his wife’s side as she bring these twins into the world. It’s a beautiful thing.

He will cheer the boys on from afar and I have zero doubt they will have him in the back of their minds the whole time.

Love you Nate. 💙❤️

If the Dees win in a fortnight and Clarry, Max or another Dee wins the Norm Smith medal, it'd be awesome if they donated their premiership medal to Jonesy as a tribute...

Hopefully he'll be at the airport to greet them on their return so he can get his hands on that cup asap

And best of all, 3 future father/sons, and 1 future father/daughter.

No worries. Give him another one year extension, he could be in the Grand final team of year 2022. In past 20 years, Hawthorn was the only one team which won the minor premiership and Premiership Cup in 2012, they then went on to win their next 2 Premiership in 2013 and 2014. Are there anyone willing to say that's Hawthorn, they can but Demons can't? Most likely we are going to win this year's Premiership, we will have very good chance to win next year's as well. It's our time!

By the way, why so many people all over Australia, including a few of Geelong support, PA support and WB support love to see Demons to win this year's Premiership? because many of us still in the hard time, people need fairytale.

A completely team-focussed decision by the ultimate team-first player.  I’m sure he was always going to head back to Melbourne when the birth was imminent but by taking the decision now he has removed one of the few issues of uncertainty for the team at the beginning of the GF build-up, and provided the club with another positive motivation for the next two weeks.  How effective was the message of “doing it for our Melbourne-based fans who deserved to see their team in finals” in the PF lead-up?  The players referred to it in every interview and quote over the last couple of weeks.  Emotion can’t come into when it comes to selecting the team for a GF, and this helps the club to focus on putting together the best team to get the job done.  No distractions.  Nathan Jones understands that and typically lives by it.

Unless his wife is giving birth at that exact moment. Or... especially if his wife is giving birth at that exact moment?

Agree. If Jones was not going to be selected, as seemed probably, I'm happy for him that he has something else tremendously important and positive upon which to focus his attention. Another team needs his leadership now.

Usefully, this early decision to return home changes the narrative from a distracting "will Jones play" to a motivating "let's do it for Jones". Well managed by Jones & MFC.

Apparently Goody was always going to be straight with him and let him now if he would be in the GF team or not if we made it. As there are no injuries well only May possibly and he wouldn't replace him, Jordan has been good for us and will obviously be the medical sub again.

But everyone knows what Jonsey has done for this team and club. I'm gutted for him but I know it's not the same as a premiership I'm happy that at least he got to play his 300th in front of fans this season and we won. He has 2 new children to look forward to meeting and I'm sure the rest of his family have missed him. I know he will be barracking very hard for us and I saw Maxy say tonight on the news if we did win Jonsey would be the first person he'd facetime.

I love Jonesy, and if you do ever read this stuff, I want you to know we are indebted to you for what you have brought to this club. Thank you. Can’t wait to hear about the safe arrivals of your twins. Nothing more important than family.

    TRAINING: Wednesday 12th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
