Hibbo isn't currently playing and he is the most similar to Maynard, he is becoming quite limited with his movement.

Smith will likely never play on the sort of player Maynard would, again. 

 

I agree I think he improves us and would be a good get, but if he's a lock in our back 6 with May, Lever, Salem, Petty and Rivers then missing out / interchange is Bowey, Hunt, Tomlinson, Smith and Hibberd. Rivers is probably our version of Maynard and I'd prefer Rivers every day. Also the money spent on Maynard can help hold talent like Rivers who is in line for a big pay-rise. The beauty for Melbourne now is they can low ball any talent unhappy with their present club. MFC has done a great job of identifying who it wants and sticking to the plan with Lever, May and Langdon all coming across on strong rumours and this year it looks like Maynard is the one who we're into, but we are now in a position to pick and choose and there will be lots of players "gettable" in the off season. Maybe we wait?

I agree that a) how would we have space to take the 600-750 asking price and b) what would we trade.

Agree - while I'd love Maynard I think we've got reasonable depth in this type of position.  Surely there's other areas that are greater priority (pace / class in the middle, young key forward, developing ruck etc)

But do we need Maynard? I would have thought between Tomlinson, Smith and Hibberd (if he stays for 1 more year) and a developing Bowey we had that half back sweeper spot covered. Maynard is a good player though, white line fever, hates to get beat. I hope we put a high price on Weidemann though because I think we might need him for structure of the team more than Maynard.

If Smith is getting games then yes, we need him.

I could see them moving Rivers into the middle/wing and using Maynard in defence. You can't bank on having basically no injuries each year and Hibberd would be lucky to go round again as well.

I'm probably going to be hammered for this idea, but would we let go of Tom Mcdonald and try to keep Sam Weideman?

This has nothing to do with McDonald's decline in form over the past few weeks. He is in his late-20's, he's not going to get any better, and he might be marketable to another club now. If he's still contracted (?), it might save us some coin.

Even though we haven't seen enough from Weideman to prove that he can make it, he's substantially younger and there's potentially a lot of upside to him. He might just slot into the side nicely next year now that we have some continuity with our set up.

Think quite a few said that about a ruckman on our list, who hardly played any games in his first five years with us.

Sam Edmund confirming that Maynard is staying at Collingwood. Will be signing a contract extension before the end of this year.

Maynard doesn't excite me. Has quite a few brain fades. I do like his attack on the ball though, He is manic.

He's not what we need.

We need to add outside run and delivery skills. Someone like Bowie only taller! Laurie could be that person but is only 181cm. Maybe a Lukosias type.

You can't have enough class and where we sit we don't want to be adding second rate players.

We also need a back up ruckman. And eventually a replacement for McDonald.

I am also looking forward to the day that players are clamouring to get to the Dees because they want to play in finals..

I noticed with Alir Alir in the few games I saw him play that he would start the first quarter like a train but would drift out of the game the longer it went, perhaps a fitness issue..

Admittedly it was a small sample but just my observation.
