I remember that when it happened there was an odd hush on the MCG at the time, the sound of it was absolutely awful. I could not believe King got off scott free, it was reckless, stupid, and clearly dangerous. Meanwhile Brent Moloney got 2 weeks in the same year for “potential impact” on Bartel but didn’t actually touch him.

Was in the MCC about 5 rows back, very loud sound.

Big OOF moment

Geelong ruckman. Steven King.

Not to be confused with the author - different kind of horror.

Nah nah it was an accident, no suspension required it's a Geelong player after all.

Play on.

It was a sickening hit. Sounded awful when that boot hit and I just remembered gasping and hoping Jeff was ok.

I’ll always hate Bomber Thompson for joking about it in his press conference after the match. Something along the lines of head shouldn’t have been there, he head butted Kings foot etc. [censored] waste of skin that bloke. He’s probably face down in a ditch now after his ice addiction.

I say this with all the love I can muster - dig a hole and f@cking bury him!

You can hear the thud of boot on jaw contact in this video of the incident:

Karma has caught up to Thompson the past few years.

He definitely wasn’t joking in the press conference the following week when nick davis had just ran riot and kicked them out of the finals ! Magical Geelong capitulation

How true! Still occurring, possibly always will until the AFL become transparently responsible.

Me too, was almost as high as you can get in the stands but still heard it clear as day.

As a few have mentioned, you could hear the sound from the crowd and it was sickening.

Bomber said something along the lines of 'King could've broken his leg' which was just so out of touch given the seriousness of the injury. Would love to see the actual quote, I've looked for it but haven't found it.

I always remember when Thompson was on 360. Absolutely off his box, and nothing was ever said or done.

His Port Melbourne wharehouse was fascinating

Got off….

shocking privelaged human

I think the class of Bomber as a human has been on display for all to see.

At least there is some comfort that he, Bomber, has to wake up being him every day.

Listening to tv commentary on the video it’s truely cringeworthy, even for back then

Was that the day when Jeff White's jaw could've broken King's leg according to Mark Thompson?

I remember that too - he was 'on' something that day...

Sorry did Jeff get hit? Or is this from when he got kicked in the face?

All we know is what is included by Jeff White in the photo in the OP. Given the #kinghit hashtag, I think we can assume it is from the Stephen King kick.

It actually raises a question in my mind about the kicking in danger rule. I don't know how the rule is worded but it seems to me a free kick (pardon the pun) is only paid if the kick actually makes contact with an opposition player. I would have thought a free kick should be played whenever there is a risk of such contact rather than only when contact is made.

I actually thought it waa paid on contact and also if there was a chance of making contact.

Thus at the umps disgression if it seemed contact could have been made its in danger.

Dont quote me.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.

  • GAMEDAY: West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
