Because the club rate Joel extremely highly and he's been named emergency the past few weeks. He's also shown he can play on the smalls and do the job like he did against Papley last year.

I'm not a Smith fan myself, but Hibberd hasn't exactly been crash hot the past couple of weeks. Just seems to fumble at the most crucial time.

Footy exposure to a variety of other teams is essential to develop consistencies in players. I am a fan of Joel's attributes and wonder quite often how he would develop from gametime, how he might impact particular matches from which he had been excluded, why team exclusion under Goodwin is such a feature of his footballing history and this season, unsighted since coming back from injury. In addition, his forward skills and mobility are sorely ignored; instead, he is played out of position in the backline as a stop-gap filler, nothing more, at a time when we really need the skills that he has displayed in the past at AFL level. Is this situation likely to change at any time in the future for Joel?

If Viney does miss I think they'll go the extra big body in Vandenberg. I would have preferred Jordon, but gut feel in me thinks they'll prefer to freshen Jordon up for finals. Vanders actually played well in both 2018 games in Perth so could be another consideration. It's also meant to be a wet game so again the extra hardened body helps in these conditions.

Salem is the obvious out it seems? Hibberd comes straight back in.

I'm banking that the club will give McDonald every opportunity until the final minute. If he is ruled out this weekend then it's a coin toss between Melksham and Weideman. Again, it's going to be wet so maybe Melksham gets the nod.

Yep, I'd go for Vanders in Perth; the man plays with heart and soul and keeps at it. He does things for our team confidence.

Jordon for Viney. Sparrow reprieved

Hibbo for Salem if Christian isn't fit to play

Would like to get a look at Jones before finals. didn't travel i understand so perhaps Adelaide. and would like to see Melks as well. His delivery is very good if only he could apply more pressure.

Excellent pick up LDVC.

Premature comment by me on Jack given his now-enforced holiday in the 2 most important games of the year so far to lock in double chance.

I don't know how highly the club rates someone who hasn't played a game in the seniors all year. Agree his game on Papley last year was good but that's one game against a side who at the time was bottom 4. Hibberd was out of form before he got dropped but has shown more this year in that role than Smith ever has, so I'd much prefer we go with the player who's demonstrated more solid recent form in a role that's closer to what we get from Salem.

Hopefully the Salem rumour isn't right though and we don't have to worry!

We all remember what happened the last time at Optus Stadium that Joel Smith was preferred in the backline to another player after very limited games in the AFL as preparation for that game!

No visible improvement to any form at AFL standard since. Now as a forward it might be worth a gamble!!!

Interestingly I do wonder whether Joel Smith could be a surprise inclusion for Salem?

If Joel Smith gets a game before Lockhart I will…be fairly annoyed.

Can’t see too many changes. TMac to be OK, Viney out to give neck massages and JJ comes in.  Vanders as an outside choice, maybe as sub.

Harmes to lock onto Kelly, and Dogga to leap with Nic Nat more than Gawny.  Weids obvious replacement for TMac if he doesn’t come up, and Hibbo for Salem (using Bowery in Salem’s role) if he is forced out.

T Mac involved in the gym work, be hard to see him missing

If that video was taken in Perth (and it looks like it, as the training facilities don't look like our usual ones in Melbourne), then Weideman is over there, you can see him in the footage (same with Chandler, Sparrow, Hibberd, Daw, Melksham, vandenBerg and Smith).

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
