We might be better off with one of Brown or Weid come finals, but I think it's clear Weid needs a spell and Brown can't come back in on no form or games.

Let's get our pressure game back on track then work out if we need the extra tall. There's still a long way left in the season

Weideman has no form either and he's played the games

The VFL form was 7-8 weeks ago and now he's had 5 games of no impact at AFL, that's the point.

No mate, you're still missing the point.

Weid was originally selected off the back of good VFL form. He'll likely now be dropped as he hasn't performed.

Brown hasn't earned a game with his VFL form yet.

Hard to earn a VFL game on form when they aren’t playing at the moment. What I can tell you is that over many seasons at AFL level Ben Brown has proven himself as one of the better forwards in the completion. Meanwhile, the Weid has been average at best.

Sure, no one would argue Brown isn't a more proven player, but you pick the team on current form not form from a couple of years ago.

Current form of Weideman at AFL levels suggests that he isn’t up to it, so you give the next bloke in line a go. It’s a COVID impacted season and your old school rules of selection don’t apply. Accept that and move on

"Old school rules"... I think you'll find players still get picked on present form, COVID or not. That form might be training form, practice match form or VFL form, but it's still how it's done. If we start picking the team based on performances from 2 years ago then we're in trouble.

I agree on current form Weid will likely be dropped, but Brown wasn't even named as an emergency so that should give you some insight into how the selection committee rate his current available form.

I don't need to "accept" your opinion when it's not aligned with the facts.

I don’t have to accept yours either and if you read through this thread, most posters are in disagreement with you.

how do you know what Brown’s track form is like? You’ve assumed he hasn’t been training well enough..based on??

Based on the fact he wasn't picked in the squad for the game on the weekend.

Pretty simple.

The fact that Mitch Brown was named first emergency, and in stand by for Tom McDonald if he had to shoot off for his wife's birth.

Pretty self explanatory..

In his post game conference Goodwin named Jones, Vandenberg, Melksham and Jetta as players who've been in strong form in the match simulation trainings.

Also confirmed Viney will be ready as well. Will play in the match simulation/intra club next Saturday.

to this point, various interviews on the website suggest Ben Brown is training extremely strongly, looking much more aggressive and moving much more freely, i believe it was Richo? who said that. so with that in mind i don't think Ben Browns form as such is an issue for his selection, it'll be more to do with if they think Weid is filling the role they've got him there for, or not.

The Weid's confidence is shot. BB had an interrupted 2020 due to injury and missed the preseason. He's not fit enough. It ain't looking good for either this year. We coped very well without them early in the year and can do so again. I won't be surprised if we revert to our early season forward set-up for Essendon

I think everyone seems to be making false equivalencies here.

Weid coming out doesn't automatically mean Ben Brown comes in. It doesn't even necessarily mean Mitch Brown comes in.

Will be a very interesting match sim to watch, there will be some players with a point to prove.

Unfortunately, the list of Jones, Vandenberg, Melksham and Jetta does not provide a noticeable and immediate improvement over the group from the weekend.

Looks like @Dwight Schrute went in to bat for me so I wont argue/repeat the same points.

I really like Sam, this is the first time I've thought we should drop him because he hasn't done enough. He has been invisible for weeks and either M or B Brown would be better in the team right now

Hope you both have a great day fellas

Someone mentioned BBB is going through a 6 week pre season to improve some fitness/strength aspects. I’d love to know how far along this is. I think about 5-6 weeks now? He might be close ….

Weid has played 5 in row plus the bye. Brown’s ready if that is the case.

Agree with that - I'm a bit surprised there's been no mention of Daw getting a chance. At least he wouldn't get brushed aside like a feather. Our forward line was bereft of any real physical strength yesterday with perhaps TMac as the exception but he failed to have much of an impact

Fritta lucky that Weid was so poor otherwise he'd be in the firing line too - he really struggled

I like Sparrow and think he might make it but he needs to realise that he is not the Incredible Hulk and cant brush off tackles

Out Weid, Sparrow

In Viney, (Daw or M Brown)

It doesn't, but senior figures of the club have said they expect 3 key forwards to be a thing we stick with throughout the year, so i suspect if Weid goes out he'll likely be replaced with a tall.

However as you point out, nothing is guaranteed. i don't mind the idea of going smaller. Jackson, TMac and Fritsch are 3 good marking targets

Daw was a fringe player in a side with the worst list in the competition so he isn't going to play too many matches in a side near the top of the ladder.

The thing about BBB is he is going to compete particularly in the air and he haven't had that with Weed, Moore stood and outworked him rather than trying to munch a couple of times last night so saw him as no real threat.

Yep fair point, but I believe it's been mentioned they consider Fritsch as a tall. (I think it might have been Gawn that said that a couple of weeks ago but not 100% sure). Potentially they could go with TMac, Fritsch and then Gawn & Jackson rotating, similar to the first few rounds. It's a tough one, and we've had 3 different forward setups this year role wise so I don't think they've fully settled on it tbh.

At some stage in a winning team you have to start clicking and performing consistently BA.  How long do you want to give to see if he's in form and slotting in fine?  Surely if he is he hits on at least one or two of those chances.

Brown was playing well though, the Carlton game being the exception. Both Brown and Weideman struggled that game

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
