Great footballer but I hated the way he left Brisbane to go to the Pies. Reeked of entitlement.

Despised watching him as a player, not because of his play, but the pandering by the Media and Ed's fawning and drooling over him.

Loved his media work - he has insights and can articulate them. 

I simply cannot understand how a bloke who has led a team into a Grand Final, a Prelim and a Semi Final in 3 years, can get the boot so soon after. He can coach, no doubt, but his people management skills are renowned as being direct, confrontational and too-high expectations.

His situation is probably comparable to ND’s in 2007 (though Neale didn’t have a prominent backer like Ed or an exodus of players thanks to salary cap mismanagement). 
 

A 10 year coach who can clearly do the job and with a respectable win loss record takes a team close, but can’t snag a premiership. He comes into a year where questions are asked if he is the bloke for the next rebuild. He starts the year poorly and the jungle drums start beating from there.

So they need an experienced coach. Where we went for an inexperienced coach and it took till Roos to fix the problems

Or at least an inexperienced coach who has been working within a successful footy club (or clubs) for a number of years and knows how to handle differing noise and expectations btw Round 4 vs Prelim Final. I can't see them hiring from within this time. 

It's an interesting consideration on what makes a good coach - Brett Ratten who I have a great deal of respect for isn't getting the best out of what I think is a pretty good list (based on last year). I don't rate Clarko as highly (I reckon Fagan was doing a lot of work in the background when they were successful) but he's not doing anything special with a sub par list.  

Long may their ineptitude continue.

he's actually had a very impressive list in that time period and other than a good 2018 has not achieved anything like that the quality would indicate the filth should have done

I think that he was both a good and poor coach. 

He had just come out of playing and had very limited experience coaching when he took the head coaching job at Collingwood. As we've seen with others, this usually plays out badly and Buckley has been one of the very best at it. He started off as a poor coach and that probably resulted in them wasting a period where they could have won another flag or two. 

But he regenerated the list and created a team that was a legitimate flag threat for a few years, which also could have netted him a flag. I think he's now a good coach.

Coaches get better as they get older, generally. I think the next team that he coaches will get a much better coach than the one that got him in 2011. He probably needs to do a couple of other roles in football first to round out his experience, but I can see him coming back again as a very good coach. 

 

I like Buckley. He’s absolutely won me over, despite starting from a very low base.

I’m worried about Monday though - this announcement will mean the Pies have the equivalent of 20 extra players.

If Yze goes to the Pies, I will kill myself.

I hope Williams stays, and I think he is done with senior coaching.
I hope Yze goes, because he deserves a crack at it.

Mitchell seems to be the talk in terms of assistant coaches next in line.

Choko is on record saying he doesn’t want to be a senior coach again.

Still think Pies will go for Lyon, although Carlton will also be chasing him as I doubt they’ll replace on rookie coach in Teague with another. Also wouldn’t put it past Carlton to keep Teague and put a strong team of assistants around him, like we did with Goodwin.

Breaking News: Collingwood has announced the new coach to replace Nathan Buckley. Former player and club legend Laurie Holden will take the reins with immediate effect. The club wishes him well. (Item from Facebook - at this point in time not verified by The Club).

NOTE: They named the Holden Centre after this man.

I haven't read anywhere or heard mentioned anywhere that Yze is in contention for either Carlton or Collingwood. Carlton will look for experience after Bolton and Teague (if he's sacked) and I doubt he fits the profile of a Collingwood coach.

Hawthorn haven't showed their hand yet but it's just a question of the timing of the transition to Mitchell. I can't see Clarko hanging around after this season. If he does step down he'll be number one on Collingwood's list your would think.

I'm fairly confident Yze and Choco are going nowhere.

I have to say, I'm a Buckley fan. I know he was a tad figjammy along time ago, but of all the AFL coaches, he's the one I enjoy listening to the most on all things AFL. He's incredibly articulate, insightful, sharp and has a decent sense of humour too.

I hope he spends some time in the media this year, once he's watched Collingwood go down the gurgler. Can definitely see him coaching again.

I didn't see it live, but one night on Slobbo's football show, Slobbo was asking Buckley (the two can't stand each other) what he thought about various players. "What about Geoff Hayward?" asks Slobbo. "Yeah, good player ..." says Buckley, and a few other vague compliments, bluffing his way through ... only to be told that Geoff Hayward is a fictional player. Pretty basic booby trap and Nafe walked right into it.

I am still puzzled why Buckley did not immediately resign. Coaching one more game appears more about him than the club. I suspect he’s  banking on a spirited performance by his players to cause a huge upset so that the headlines can present him leaving with a raised middle finger to the club. Trying to gain all the attention to portray himself as a fallen hero. I hope we spoil his latest delusion of grandeur.

Perhaps I only listen to him these days with the fawning collaborator, but I have noticed, for the first time this year, that Buckley has  spoken with a level of despondency and stumbles to find the right words. All coaches sound like your quote above in a post game press conference. Buckley's flavour is corporate tossery whereas Goodwin's all 'narratives' and 'journeys.' It doesn't say much about the coach, just what they have to trot out each week to the media.

Yes, it can get a bit much, won't be long until we start hearing this kind of drivel...

'We want to create an environment where players are empowered to take carriage of scoring goals, and/or restricting opponents from doing so, in a manner that is consistent with our positive and gender-fluid values.'

I think it probably just gives Robert Harvey a little more runway to get used to the job with the bye next week.
