Take a chance, players can turn form around.

Who knows what the $ will be, but definitely some marketing opportunities arising from a trade too.

I understand it's partly a function of an emerging competition but one thing that is holding back the women's game is the constant shifting of players. I know it happens everywhere but with Daisy as the exception, in the AFLW it seems no one is willing to commit to the guernsey. That makes it harder to care much about it.

How good was Daisy announcing on 360 on the eve of the competition, ‘only Melbourne’, all those years ago. I was sad when Harris left, I reckon she’d fit with our group if Daisy says so.

  • Demonland changed the title to AFLW: Welcome Back to Demonland: Tayla Harris

There'll likely come a time where $150k will be considered entry-level - being pioneers with pay is appropriate given our pioneering role with the women's game more broadly. Tick for mine.

That kicking action is bloody magnificent. In my eyes the only true "elite" kick in AFLW

When I read that she was considering leaving I wondered if we would have a shot at her and hoped that we would.

Lets hope she returns to her best form as it would make us far more dangerous.

Welcome back Tayla. Excited to have you on board again.

Hard to know what to think about it until we find out the trade details. Same goes for the salary. She'll likely be a top band players I guess and then get some kind of marketing allowance. The marketing she does = a higher profile = more photos of the team sponsors = more revenue.

Good clubs take chances and make them work but there certainly is some risk here. She does seem very keen on her boxing career. She does seem very keen on marketing her image. Is she as keen to make sure her football really stacks up?

From an on field perspective the team could do with an accurate kicking full forward. Zanker appears more suited to a midfield role. Cunningham might not have a lot left. Bannan is really young.

I'm cautiously optimistic, with a decent chance she's a solid contributor but also it's entirely possible she flames out if she's not committed to the team cause.

If there is a salary cap, only a stupid club would look to be a "pioneer" salary wise.

Not overly happy with this but them is the breaks. What do we lose in return ?

Salary will presumably be made up in marketing money

Hope we didn’t trade much for her - not entirely convinced she’s in our best side

Daisy said the wage includes a wage for work she will do as well as playing footy. In the scheme of things not a huge wage based on being a professional footballer and also working.

We desperately need a full forward, and even though she did nada this season if there's no other options available I'd be willing to take the chance.

Do you think you would have been more enthusiastic if the $150k sum hadn't been bandied around?

Also, would you (or anyone) feel better about the $150k if it was actually $130k split across $30k as a Tier 2 AFLW player, $70k for a full time job at the club, and $30k as part of an Additional Service Agreement for use of her image in MFC related marketing content, additional public appearances, sponsorship appearances etc.?

I don't know for sure, but a) $150k was always going to be a top end claim and b) this is the type of split I'd be expecting.

Super happy. I was gutted she went to Brisbane instead of us as a marquee player at the start of the comp. Better late than never.

I'm not so much worried about the club getting value for money as I am about the other players.

It seems clubs have a salary cap structure then also seem to have a hierarchy as to who gets put forward for VFL/AFLW commentary jobs, promotional opportunities, footy clinics and so on.

This is just an example but I'd hate to see someone like Lil Mithen who bleeds red and blue get shuffled down the order because we bring in Harris if she doesn't commit to the team culture. Which as far as I can tell is pretty special with the girls.

I have no concerns about what the club has agreed to financially with Tayla. She will, no doubt, easily make that back to the club in sponsorship dollars.
Like others though I am a bit concerned about what she offers on the field. She was an ‘elite’ player when the competition started but the new generation of forwards coming through are faster, better below their knees and have a higher footy IQ.
Having said that I regard us as a big club in the women’s game who consistently makes good decisions. I trust that they know what they are doing.
Go Tayla. Go Dees!

Attracting Tayla Harris, the biggest name in the game, and young Purcell, a b&f winner from Geelong, demonstrates we are a destination club. The team is in great shape and as long as we keep Daisy around to ensure the culture is preserved we can create sustainable success well into the future.

I'm delighted with where our club is at, both the mens and womens teams.

  • Demonland changed the title to WELCOME BACK TO DEMONLAND: TAYLA HARRIS

MELBOURNE
In –
Olivia Purcell (Geelong), Tayla Harris (Carlton), picks 44 (Carlton) and 49 (Adelaide)
Out – Chantel Emonson (Geelong), picks 15 (Geelong), 32 (Carlton), 42 (GWS) and 47 (Adelaide)

That's an amazing deal on the face of it - two mid range draft picks & a fringe player for two potential stars. Well done MFC.

Now we're just a key defender away from a premiership team.
