Fat Tony 5,337 Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 Switching the bye to next week makes the most sense on the chance that things settle down and it can be held in Melbourne. 3 Quote

Supreme_Demon 4,132 Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 Seeing as the COVID-19 lockdown looks to being extended for at least one extra week I think we need to look at alternatives besides the MCG. Especially if we are not going to be able to have a crowd to watch the Queen's Birthday Game between Melbourne and Collingwood. It would also be such a travesty for the "Big Freeze" MND event that is held if there is no crowd! My suggestions are the following: 1) Play the game at Adelaide Oval in South Australia. Especially, if Collingwood are going to be over there anyway. 2) Play the game down in Tasmania at Blundstone Arena in Hobart. It would also do Tasmania's chances of eventually having their own AFL team boosted if they were to assist. 3) Play the game over in Western Australia at Optus Stadium in Perth. At least there would be a strong likelihood of a large crowd. At the very least all 3 of these options would ideally mean there would be a crowd that can be there to watch the event. Quote
Older demon 2,801 Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 Some great suggestions. I think depending on the length of the extension the AFL should make next weekend a bye round for everyone. Latest is the virus has a site in Anglesea and up north into southern NSW. I fear it will get worse before it improves which is what has been shown overseas in winter. Quote
spirit of norm smith 16,677 Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 if not at the MCG, shift the Dees v Pies game to the Adelaide Oval. Makes sense. Dees go straight from Sydney to Adelaide. Sunday 13th June - night 6.50pm start 1 1 Quote
Jaded No More 68,976 Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 Another 7 day lockdown here in the great city of Covid. Please nobody who doesn’t live in Melbourne tell us it’s only 7 more days. PTSD is high. 1 Quote

Big Freeze can be set up on the iconic Hill near the famous heritage listed scoreboard would make for amazing viewing. Plus the Adelaide Demon Army would be up and about. Would be good prep for Port in 6 weeks time. No Brainer. Edited June 2, 2021 by Win4theAges Quote

Demon3 2,541 Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 There is zero chance of a full crowd for the big freeze game at the G, 10% chance of a small capacity crowd.. lets move it.. it deserves it after missing last year.. Neale, in what could be his last year deserves to watch it. 1 Quote

Rab D Nesbitt 8,947 Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 Two Melbourne based teams so play it at the G, whether on QB in an empty stadium or a week later with the possibility of fans. Moving the game interstate to get some fans in will not compensate for the cost and inconvenience of flying two teams and their support staff to and from another part of the country, paying for hotel accommodation and renting out a stadium. This would only make economic sense if another state wants to outlay a large sum to take the game and it's a buyers market right now. Given that players have already made rumblings about the prospect of hubs again it's likely they would prefer a normal lead in to the game instead of being away. Don't forget there's no certainty that once they leave the state that they'd definitely be coming straight back afterwards. Just like the Royal Children's Hospital Appeal each year we can still donate money to the MND cause online and by phone without having a crowd bear witness to a few celebrities go down a slide. Quote

They already said we can't got to regional Victoria over the long weekend. No chance they'll say "but please go to the football". Absolute balls. Quote
Diamond_Jim 12,756 Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 okay ... time for a bidding match between Perth and Adelaide. Throw in Sydney and Brisbane if you wish Let's be sensible we have a product to sell and no ground gives us an advantage/ disadvantage Optus gives you higher crowd numbers but I would be asking the States to underwrite a minimum gate figure Quote
rpfc 29,017 Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 Do it in Adelaide and get some coin and keep the sponsors in mind and Neale’s initiative up in lights. They can do a split of people getting dunked in ice across the two states and make it unique. The crowd will go along on a public holiday over there. 1 Quote

I think you and I are the only posters here that think this game should still be at the G. From a purely footballing point of view, I want this game at the G as we need to play as many games at the G as possible to prefect our game plan in time for September. And as you mentioned, the players are hell bent on not hubbing and would much prefer to play the game here and wake up in their own beds on game day. That counts for lot in my book. 1 Quote
rjay 25,423 Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 Even if we could get 100% capacity into the 'G' I don't think we would get a big crowd anyway. The crowds have been down here for number of reasons, mainly COVID related. Besides which C/Wood are playing like busted's and their army (lol) just won't show up. C/Wood fans are a bunch of downhill skiers. Maybe it would be a blessing to move it... Quote
brendan 3,456 Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 Optus has sold out for dream time, so I would be pushing for something similar, can’t be played in front of no fans 1 Quote
FarNorthernD 5,861 Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 Given Daniher’s connection to both Melbourne and Essendon I’ve always thought the best fit for the MND game was when we play the Bombers. That game is still 3.5 weeks away and is already a night match at the G. Would it not be relatively simple to move to then? 3 Quote

This seems like the easiest solution, but I wonder if the various commercial contracts the AFL is engaged in makes it untenable. One example I can think of would be around the TV advertising, where advertisers may pay for specific blocks of air time to coincide with things like product launches, major company announcements etc. I would imagine the AFL moving games around may breach contracts and incur financial penalties. TV is where the real money is for the AFL, not at the gate. Quote

I've got no qualms about those who think the game would be more of a spectacle if there are fans in the ground but the game is skint and our state coffers are empty so unless the size of the crowd was going to cover the cost of all of the logistics to get it done or that Virgin Australia are going to fly everyone there and back for free, the hotel they all stay at is going to lay on free rooms and food and drink for all concerned and the owners of the ground it's played at are going to offer it gratis to the AFL then without Gil having a magic money tree in his back garden I can't see this happening. Not to mention it having the backing of most of the players who could just as easily sleep in their own bed on Sunday and drive to the G the next day. Quote
