No.1 draft picks haven't exactly had the best run of late have they?

Watts

Scully

Boyd

McCartin

Patton

Just the ones that come to mind. Different reasons and nothing personal as a whole.

Add Rayner, Rowel & Ugle-Hagen to that list for now, the curse of number one...

Whitfield is struggling to get on the park.

Also Scully & Kreuzer were cut down by injury.

So, of the 2000's the first 3 had good careers... 2000 Riewoldt, 2001 Hodge, 2002 Goddard.

...but since then the pickings from the pick are hit and miss.

Luck still plays a big part.

Injuries cruelled his career like many others. Very ordinary behaviour off-field so hopefully he has copped on to himself and can make a go of life post footy.

It’s a poisoned chalice being No.1. Not sure I’d want my boy or girl to go at that selection. They’re just kids thrust into the spotlight and have the hopes and dreams of a whole fanbase projected onto them. I’d hate living in that fishbowl and under that kind of intense scrutiny.

Really feel for Rowell in particular. Burst onto the scene looking the real deal, future brownlow and 300-gamer. 2 serious injuries back to back is a big worry. I really hope he has some luck, gets himself right and can play an extended period of footy.

Yes, Rowell is an exceptionally gifted young footballer.  I’d be wrapping him in cotton wool for the year again. The Suns aren’t going anywhere soon. Why rush to get him back on the field?

It's good to see Hawthorn's arrogance trip them up. Recently they have taken the view they are special enough that they can revive the careers of injury troubled high draft picks like Scully, Patton, O'Meara, and it's not really working out.

In case anyone's in any doubt, that's a good thing. The bad thing is that they've those four recent flags to enjoy. Oh well.

What's the difference between arrogance and backing yourself @RigidMiddleDigit?

In the first instance it may not be that much, but when you keep doing it and it does not get the results you expected it's time to rethink.

Started with James Frawley added to their list. Underwhelming first season but lucky to get a cameo in their last premiership win. Since then he did nothing much and epitomised Hawthorn’s recruiting strategy failures and steady decline.

A shame for mine.  He claims to have genuine regret for his actions. I would have liked to see him become a spokesman & educate young players coming into the system on how to relate to women properly.

what a dumb, knee-jerk suggestion

get someone who has no idea how to treat women and let him loose on young players......sheesh

I’d be very interested to have a look at the over hit vs miss rate on number one draft picks. It really looks like it’s a poisoned chalice.

Patton, Watts, Scully, McCartin off the top of my head are number one draft picks that have had early ends to their career.

And what great advice would he have to pass on?

Patton is lucky not to be in jail

Also a very troubled human being. Which doesn't excuse being "ordinary", but the two often go hand in hand. Hopefully he can get the help he needs, he's clearly not in a good place.

He can get all the help he needs, what about his victims (recipients) If he wasn’t an AFL Footballer he would be in a cell.
But why do people all of a sudden think he can be an educator just because he was an AFL Listed Player.

Ah SWYL - The Hanging Judge - predictable comments.

Can you provide evidence that his offences deserved jail. No doubt you would have given Liam Jurrah 10 years in the slammer for his indiscretions.

I happen to believe in redemption & 2nd chances. I have no reason to doubt his sincerity & am sorry he retired.

I guess you never stuffed up in your 20's.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

Demonland's own Whispering Jack was not in attendance but he kicked off proceedings with the following summary of all the Preseason Training action to date. BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
