Clayton Oliver Re-Signs Until 2023

I realise this is easy to say now that it's done, but I was never really worried about this. This is the guy who, when told he needed to lose weight as a junior, just stopped eating. Getting bogged down in details isn't his style. I highly doubt he's the type of person who would want to bother himself protracted contract negotiations to squeeze out a few extra bucks, or to make ultimatums about team success.

I feel the same will be true when he's a FA in 2023. So long as the MFC open with an offer that is fair and reasonable for a player of his calibre, it will resolve with no fuss.

Not having a go at you Nasher, so my comments are more so leveled  as an observation in general.

I've lost count with the number of times I have heard people (and particularly those who claim to be in the know) , trot out a line about a players mindset or decision making process that has led to an outcome that they now claim having predicted or assumed would happen. It sounds very profound when it is said because people must think 'they must know'. It is the easiest thing to say and the laziest thing to believe.

I hope you are right with your 2023 prediction.

Love him. Well done, Clarry.

Interesting that Sam McClure on FC tonight is adamant that Oliver met with David Teague and Carlton at the end of last year. Standing firm on his story that he (Oliver) wanted out of Melbourne...what upset him so much and what is the turnaround?

Fortunately it doesn’t matter

Young volatile player is peed off with not playing finals, then subsequently finishes 5th in the B&F.  Said young player who feels he should be more highly valued and is still feeling a little raw meets an opposition coach of a club that he knows is keen to secure his services.  Rumours subsequently abound.

But pretty soon he has time to think about his mates, the club, the journey, and the direction he's thought about for years.  But the cat is out of the bag, so the rumours won't stop.

This would happen all the timer every year.

Did he get p1ssed off and think about leaving ?  Probably.  Who cares ?  That's a million miles from actually doing it.

but as one of the others said he could have just been bumping up his value at his managers direction

just because he met teague (if he did) doesn't necessarily mean he wanted out

i imagine it wouldn't be hard to talk a player into "just have a conversation, no commitment, no harm, everyone does it"

Great interview. It's always been hard to get a read on Clarry but signing the contract so early in the season suggests that it was never really in doubt.

This is a great outcome for the club and brings more feel good factor and positivity to what has been an excellent start to the season. Listening to Trac the other night on 360 i wouldn't be surprised if he'll follow suit pretty soon as well.

P.S. he needs a haircut badly

Nothing wrong with what Sam McClure. Happens with a lot of players that doesn't get reported to the media.

Take Zac Marrett for instance, he toured our facilities and met up with Simon Goodwin. A trade was never going to eventuate, but just shows how interested we were in him. Not surprised that it's still the case.

Player managers test a players worth all the time,. Its a part of their job. And to show you're serious the player usually has to meet another club and/or tour their facilities

Nothing unual at all about this if true.

Carry on.

Yes McLure only mentioned his fact that he said Clarry saw Teague after last season to justify his allegation of truth.

No Mention Whst a great get for Dees It is and how our flag prospects have 3 years at least of a super generational player starting at the coalface for us.

Not begrudging his right to talk to other clubs, but I just wish he hadn’t come out spruiking the decision was ‘never in doubt’.  Just feels false and dishonest when clearly there was some doubt.

I’ve always struggled to warm to Oliver’s personality and this is an example of why. Having said all of that, I’m far more interested in his footballing performance than his personality.

That was Sam McClure's gripe also. To be honest I understand why people would feel this way.

Oliver still has a lot of maturing to do, and I think in the next couple of years we'll really start to see him become more level headed and wiser as he continues to grow as a young man. This is where Mark Williams will have a profound impact on him.

Still a young lad just working his way through the system.

Adem Yze

Find it hard to believe Clarrie has been false and dishonest in regard to the Carlton thing as suggested by another poster.

Just watched the club interview and gee, he’s not overcomplicated. Seems very straightforward and enjoys mate ship.

Winning is the icing on the cake.

Anyway, we should be celebrating his commitment and re-signing rather than being critical about (what are only rumours) his dalliance with Carlton.

We have all had dalliances when young, for some, even when we are old.  They usually never amount to anything and don’t  last.

There’s a big difference between testing your value on the market and seriously contemplating leaving.

Nothing like considering Carlton, visiting the club and speaking to their manager to get a player to sign on early!

can all our OOC players do that please?!

We are in a stronger position than Carlton, who still have many holes in their list. I think a few high draft picks like Dow , petrovski seton and the GWS rejects arent going to improve them enough to be a contender.
And if they miss finals Cripps is likely to leave.

and we'll probably never fully know

i think sam mcclure was wrong to unequivocally state he was seriously wanting to leave just based on a talk with an opposition coach which is becoming more common theses days as part of contract bargaining and player management tactics

How many players hold out for more money and more interest when they observe how a club and the world revolves now.

Looking at Ollie's hands i understand now how he can just pick the ball out of tight spots with ease like a pick pocket.

Hopefully this will give Salem and Trac enough incentive to sign soon given their well publicised mateship.

I also cringed when he said that it was 'never in doubt' - he was clearly looking at other offers. He needs a bit more maturity - similar to Trac's transformation in the past 2 years.

In fairness to Oliver, he's probably had media training from the club as well as direction from his manager to go with a certain dialogue that would appeal to the Melbourne faithful the most.

Would be a massive get, here's hoping he's more disgruntled than Oliver was and the Bombers season goes belly up. Salary cap a whole other issue unfortunately.

Both things could be true. He may have met with Carlton while never really considering leaving Melbourne. In his head he probably was never going to actually leave even if he did meet with Teague.

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
