When I looked at the headline I thought..."what fool wrote this!"

Well, I should have guessed....

I had a few other words censored, but basically meaning someone a bit challenged in the thought department...

Yep. As others have said, ridiculous statement.

Great teams are just great teams. Take Dusty out of the Richmond side and it'd be a blip on the radar.

It's an impossible hypothetical to evaluate, so I'm not going to disagree but Richmond were all over Geelong in the second half. The result seemed inevitable.

I'm not trying to suggest that match winners don't exist but that a team's overall performance isn't defined by one player.

Without Dusty, Richmond would still be a very strong side.

I have no idea how slobbo robbo is a chief football writer. He absolutely butchers the English language. He says 'anythinK' and 'arksed' and slurs his words.  He is one of the most uneducated blokes going around. mind boggling.

Yep, they've proven in other situations.

They couldn't win without Rance (I actually thought that one) but have sailed through and it's like Rance who...

They've won games without Jack and Cotch when they were a 3 player team.

Couldn't cover the loss of the ruckman...

Only had one key forward, no way you can win with that set up...did.

They are a strong side as you say.

How would they go without Graham and Lambert covering for Martin?

They had the Cats on toast, we will never know how they would go without Martin.

Well after watching last night one got them over the line. Without dusty no tiger flags IMO.

But would they have won those flags without him? I think not.

Richmond are well drilled and all players play there role.  Dusty has a big role and with out him you are most likely right but that is irrelevant as they have him and 3 cups.

Pettacca has an equally important role as Martin.  Like Martin, Petracca alone doesn't win you flags, helps  but needs all other players to play their role

I am well aware of that Dr. I was answering the point of " one player does not win you flags" which is of course correct. We have not had a game winner / Turner type for what seems like forever. I don't see that in Petracca yet. He plays a lot of good games but not within a bulls roar of Martin.

Pretty sure I've seen the same headline but with 'Can Gawn save the Demons?" in a previous year.

Petracca may well finish the season recognised as the best player in the AFL, which is nice.

But we all know that real success will come from getting consistent quality out of the players who can be very good, never mind any superstars.  We have a long list of the type and they could just about all be having much more impact with just a few tweaks and improvements.

Just doing a quick head-count to consider if we could, in theory, have a best 22 100% filled with at least well-above-average players if they each manage just that little extra step.

Already there;

Petracca, Oliver, Gawn, May, Langdon.

There if refreshed, returned to their better form, or otherwise tidied up a bit;

Viney, Lever, Brayshaw, Harmes, Salem, Brown

Young players I'd feel confident about;

Jackson, Rivers, Pickett.

So that's 14 players I feel confident will be 'good' at the Demons in 2021.

Somehow we have to find eight more (plus injury cover) out of that big bundle of mature but not presently reliable players and the dozen still relatively unknown younger players.

For some reason I think it'll happen. There's space for multiple solid role-players to do their thing without needing to be spectacular. THAT is the benefit of having a couple of guns who can dominate.

Soon the great Robbie Flower will be relegated to the 2nd best Demon of the last 50 years.

 Petracca is on a whole other level......  the Barassi, Leigh Matthews, Ablett Jnr and Dustin Martin level.

That is not the case 2018 Prelim he played injured and their record is almost total wins if he runs on fit! But the rest not so good.

Wash your mouth out with soap P2J! You obviously did not see Flower play. You really need to watch some Robbie highlights, he was sublime.

Did you see Flower play? The distance between Flower and Petracca at his best is marginally less than a light year.

Offensive to Robbie. There will only ever be one Robbie in all of footy histoy. No one that I have seen in over 60 years comes close in skill and outright ability in a body that was not made for footy.

Even more so that Robbie, unlike all the others, played in a poor team whereas the others named all played in powerful, successful teams that won premierships. They each had plenty of support where Robbie had almost none.

As for Petracca, the others named could regularly win matches almost on their own a stength that Petracca, although dominant at times, has yet to master. When it comes, then we can talk about comparisons.

    Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

    BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

    Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
