I agree. Although it could come down to mismanagement of their cap. I don’t think they expected to have so many players needed huge deals. Grundy, Moore, Treloar, Adams etc. 

now with DeGeoy needing a big deal they are complete screwed and need to offload a star. 
but if they are doing that by creating a narrative of Treloars health issues it is not only disgusting but stupid as who would take on his salary

I meant more at the negotiation stage when the contract is first being worked out. I guess player's agents will usually always push for lots more money, even above market value, which is why it's impressive when some clubs get their existing players to accept slightly less for the greater good (Hawthorn during their flag years, Geelong.. and Richmond now?)

Oliver is 23, Treloar is 27.

Finally, seeing as though Brownlow votes are for some reason significant to you, Oliver averages 1 vote for every 1.8 game he plays and Treloar averages 1 vote for every 2.3 games he plays.  So even on your very flawed metric Oliver has him covered.

Treloar's Brownlow tally after his first 5 years is 33 votes compared to Oliver's 54.  Treloar 101 games and Oliver 99.

Oliver's average should go higher seeing as he hasn't even reached his prime years.

I'm not talking about Treloar's first 5 years or saying Clayton won't be better than Treloar. I just believe if you play a game today with all of those players lining up Treloar would be the first picked. He is a gun

It seems clear to me that Treloar wouldn’t be a target for us for all of the reasons outlined above.

That said, he strikes me as a thoroughly good fella. The way he’s been treated by the Pies has been absolutely appalling - almost sickening to watch.

I hope he gets to another club and enjoys genuine and sustainable success there. Sometimes life throws up these ugly curve balls - only for them ultimately to turn out to be for the best. I really hope we’re looking at one of those moments here.

I feel that the entire AFL community is backing him in here.

I wish him (and his wife and little kid) all the best.

Collingwood have really shot themselves in the foot here with this one. I'd be going to Collingwood with a trade package centering around Brayshaw. Oliver, Trac, Treloar could be a scarily good midfield.

There’s something awfully wrong here. It smells of a cover up. 

Collingwood extended his contract last year and he’s on massive coin thanks to a heavily backended contract. His pay put him at the top of the pile at the club and he’s been a fine servant over the years. 

The messaging from the club to its player group and supporters is confounding and the repercussions could be massive in the future.

Collingwood enticed him to come to them on big money, apparently backloaded. Sounds like their problem and I don't see why we or anyone else should be rushing to save them. Same thing might happen at Carlton and Saints in the future. Just like the Buddy deal with Sydney, they need to be held to their deals. Taking him on for a fair value is fine, but having to wear a Collingwood mistake for years would stink. They either cover difference between what a new team is prepared to pay and what they contacted him to for the rest of the contract term, or they can be stuck with their mistake and live with their greed.

Whoever gets him I really hope they make them pay for their own mismanagement. I would be filthy if Melbourne chose to accept his insanely back ended contract. It also means that another team would be paying for Collingwood’s tactics in which they enticed him to the club. It’s despicable.

Are back ended deals a form of salary cap cheating? Like with Treloar's contract, offer player a $ 800000 season but pay 70% in first year, but then offload him before paying big money, which allows them to keep players when they think they are in a premiership year.

Treloar is a very good player....Oliver won't be better, Oliver is already better & would be first picked.

I like Treloar and unlike some if we could manage it I'd like him in our midfield.  But Oliver is a demonstrably better player, whether it be contested footy, loose balls, ground balls, etc. Oliver's combined speed and inside ball winning abilities are a more valuable combination than Treloar's accumulation, break away speed and sometimes questionable distribution. 

I think Oliver's loose ball and ground ball get abilities are sometimes overlooked.  He's been the best in the league for the last 3 years.  The ability to get first use of the footy and be the best in the league at it is huge. 

And we're yet to see the best of him.  All he needs to do is use his legs more, which he started to do, and tidy up his disposal and decision making, which is quite within his capabilities.  He's only just coming into his prime years.

Do we really have the cap room though?  It sounds like we're all in for Ben Brown and Isaac Smith and, even if we offload Tom McDonald and Preuss, I don't think it's going to add much to what we can pay players if we get both of those guys in.

If we could actually do it and take on his contract without hamstringing ourselves in signing up other players, then I'd go for it, especially if they are happy to let him go for a second round pick or something along those lines.

Much as I dislike Geelong and Hawthorn, they have both kept their successful lists together by (most at least) of their players not getting too greedy.
