The Heath Shaw Thread

Delisted. Wants to play on but only if he can be guaranteedĀ  a regular game. He turns 35 in November.

Cue Darryl Kerrigan.

I’ve seen worse ideas, but with Hibberd probably only having 1 year left and a decision to be made on Nev I don’t think were in the market for a 35 year old.

I actually think he’d make sense for North.Ā

It's a pass from me. In terms of older heads, I'd prefer we looked at Gunston and even Breust before Shaw.

Example of worse ideas

I’d spew if he played for a team I followed.

Is going backwards at a rate of knots

The 3rd year of Lewis' contract. Not winding up Jetta and Jones. Trading for Ben Brown. Oscar McDonald.

A very, very, very good footballer whose best is quickly falling behind him. His last half of this season has been poor so absolutely NO for me.Ā

If this is the end for him, it's a sad finish to what's been a fine career.

If it's not the end for him, I hope he continues somewhere other than Melbourne. His form this year was not good and he is 35.

Don’t agree with those who claim he has fallen/is falling off a perch. His consistency has been amazing. Ā Their 2nd or 3rd best defender on form in the back half of the year.
Ā

I wouldn’t get him because it risks upsetting a building dynamic in our back line but form isn’t the reason I wouldn’t recruit him for a year.

I almost considered making a worthwhile comment.

Well we knew this was coming, cue the guy saying he'll provide good disposal out of the back half and a cool experienced head.Ā

No thanks.

MFC backline coach Heath Shaw

And halfway through next year when Goodwin is fired, we can appoint him interim coach, be hypnotized by some improvement in effort, before bottoming out completely in 2022 with him at the helm, and then deciding to trade Gawn, May and Oliver and rebuilding the list in 2023 ?? Shawly not!

While we're indulging in thought experiments, how about: scion of Collingwood royalty, Heath Shaw, coaches MFC to their first flag in decades, with scion of Collingwood royalty, Sam Weideman, kicking his 9th in the last minute to seal the come-from-behind victory. The premiership cup is handed over by new AFL CEO Eddie McGuire.

Surely we’ve done this dance often enough in past years that we canĀ be a little more choosy in the washed up hacks that we pension into our club.Ā
