I don’t think that is the case.   Its not confirmed but it’s looking like 38 primary list and 2 rookies.  The players association is the one holding it up.
If they don’t agree then in 2-3 year list sizes could be as low as 34

That is what I said, 38 on main list, that is 2 less than this year.

"How many players are on AFL lists now? Teams have between 38 and 40 footballers on their 'primary' list, and either four, five or six Category A rookies for a maximum combination of 44.Apr 4, 2020"

Before delistings and trades can be discussed, not only do we need to know what the list sizes will be in 2021 and beyond, but also whether the AFL will change the rules on how many picks clubs must use in this year's draft. Has the AFL made any announcements about that? If, for example, there is no obligation to pick anyone this year (which I do not expect to be the case) we may choose to ignore the draft and prefer what we already have.

At this stage the initial delistings will be out of contract players who will not be offered a contract next year. So from the list people are posting many are contracted players. Nietscke has been promised a 1 yr contract next season & Bratdke is a category B who is seperate. Can we have someone post an updated contract status as I believe there were 20 contracts expiring at the end of October.

Ridiculous move to give Nietschke another contract

of the likely targets we might pick up, the talk has been about a mature big bodied key forward.  Like they grow on trees!  what are the thoughts about (just brainstorming - not recommending):

- Paddy McCartin

- Perryman

- Daniher (wont get him)

- Majak Daw (as was suggested in some article recently)

- Darcy Moore (as a fwd)

- Sam Day

- Carlton - McKay, Curnow or Casboult

I'd take Mccartin if he came cheaply

if you look at it every single club has roughly 8 list changes every season on average from premiers right through to spooners. + an extra 2 for the shrinking of list sizes its pretty realistic, and u cant say theres not 10 players on our list that shouldn't leave

Yeah sometimes we hear the number and think it seems huge, but would definitely not be surprised to see as many as 10 changes.

I really don't get the enormous hate for Oscar or the love for Hore.

Oscar: by no means perfect but he is a good kick and generally a good decision maker. Yes, like all fringe players he makes mistakes sometimes, but look at our Demonland votes and notice he's in the top 22. Provides the extra height needed against tall forward lines.

Hore: couldn't get a game at Collingwood. In 2019 he was frequently caught out of position and gave away unnecessary free kicks. Now he has been passed by Trent Rivers - a 19 year old in his first season. Even if he is retained, I doubt we'll see Hore selected in the team again.

Passed Hore FD?  You do realise he didn't play as he was injured all year yes?  Also, in most cases, a player needs a full pre-season in order to get to his best and compete at this level?

His game is also built slightly different to Rivers in that he's a big intercept marking player.  No.2 last year on averages only behind Lever.

I'm not sure how you can pass judgement on him given he was out all season.

His biggest downside is disposal accuracy by foot.  He would certainly need to clean that up to survive at this level.  Let's see how he goes with a full pre-season under his belt.

Aside from his disposal, which IS certainly an issue, all his other attributes point to a very solid 3rd tallish defender in the making, subject to injury issues.

I googled "2020 Melbourne Demons Squad"

Google popped up with the following Players

Daniel Cross, Harley Bennell, Jimmy Toumpas, Max Gawn, Jayden Hunt, Luke Jackson, Clayton Oliver, Aidan Riley, Dean Kent, Max King, Bernie Vince, Christian Petracca, Alex Neal-Bullen, Rohan Bail, Neville Jetta, Jake Spencer, Nathan Jones.

Looks like we have more work cut out for us at the trade table

Perryman i suggested in another thread would be worth a look at.  McKay would be a better longer term option as a forward, Casboult if we just wanted few years of support for Weid.

I think you will find most would have around 48, GC has 54 I believe.

If we took Perryman i would want him to be on a purely performance based salary.

So when he was having a shocker at the G i could yell out:

DON'T PAY THE PERRYMAN!!!

There is absolutely no chance that we'll sack Goodwin and replace him with Jordan Lewis who has never coached a day of football.

Refreshing isn't it, a concept well supported by:

  • his football knowledge,
  • his modernism and tactical nouse within the best arrays of the modern game (Hawthorn at and across its peak) and its execution,
  • his communication skills above par by a mile,
  •  his currency on the best means to approach the modern game - supported extensively in very recent times by his onfield leadership (excellence) despite being just past the sunset of his onfield, playing capabilities.

A quality man, as well. Values driven, articulate, thoughtful, resilient, great leadership mixed with personalisation at appropriate length.

Not sure on contract status but I would enquire about Langdons brother at Collingwood. Out injured for all of 2020, played mostly deep back but I think has the ability and dash to play up the ground like his brother.

What are you on about? He was never on Collingwoods AFL list. He was recruited from their VFL team after winning back to back best and fairest.

At one stage last year he was leading the AFL competition for intercept marks.

Oscar is finished. 5 years on the list and has not improved one bit. Matter of fact he's gotten worse.

If Oscar is still on the list next year then Goodwins Ruthless call is a toothless call

I would trade T Mac as well.

Spargo should be delisted and is not AFL Standard. His paltry 4 possesions on the weekend are proof of that.

Dunkley not up to it, KK should retire. I think Harley has to go. Others Im still making up my mind about.

If you could get some currency for Melksham he should go.

Fritsch for Gunston sounds OK

BROWN and HUNT STAY!

He's definitely got a better chance of getting a date with you than being an AFL coach next year.

he has been crippled by injury and recovery is doubtful.

Also Nev and Jones great servants as they have been need to retire gracefully!

If there are AFL directed list reductions there will be permitted payouts of contracts that will not impact salary caps

Swans will be thanking their lucky stars (Franklin) and it will allow us to pay out KK and possibly Jetta

I expect the following 5 to be the first to go this week

-Jones

-Omac

-Dunkley

-Nietschke

-Bradke

Almost agree   Omac  might be delisted however he kindly opens the door to Joel Smith, after you Joel. Contract or not.

Looking at @Lucifer's Hero out-of-contract list from a role point of view (in playing # order) gives some insight:

Tall Back: OMac
Medium Back: Hibberd, Hore, J.Wagner, Smith,
Small Back: Nietschke, Lockhart

R: Bradtke
Mids: Jones, Viney, Jordon, Sparrow, Dunkley

Tall Fwd: Petty, Brown
Medium Fwd: Hannan, Hunt, Fritsch
Small Fwd: Spargo, Bedford, Bennell, Chandler, C.Wagner

It depends how much depth we believe we have elsewhere in those roles and who we might be bringing in, but Medium Backs, Mids, Medium Fwds and Small Fwds look overstocked.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
