Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I'm shocked people go in expecting anything different. Players can't even answer questions these days given how clubs and the AFL media train them to say nothing human.

I thought the interview was insightful given what we typically get. Anyone going to listen to a podcast and expecting the President to come out to a bunch of guys on a podcast and say 'we're disappointed in Simon & at the end of the year, we'll be re-assessing his contract if we don't make finals' - two weeks before the end of the year with the club locked up together lives in a different world to me.

I read between the lines and take it that Pert did not unilaterally back Goodwin - that in itself gives me an important answer. Tick.

The soft-cap moves from 9.5 million to 6.5 million. We need to remove 33% of our operating expense from the business (which is near on impossible in any business) in one year. If the contract doesn't have an out, there is quite literally no possible way we could fire him & hire a new coach under the cap without sacking everyone else. That doesn't mean the club is happy with his performance but COVID was not to be expected. Perhaps they are having private conversations with AFL in the event we terminate a coach, could that money not be included in the soft cap? My reading of the situation is even if we finished dead last, it would be extremely difficult to move him on this year. I think he will get 2021 as a prove it year and following another disappointing year and some more financial security - we would be in a position to make that move.

I'm impressed with the podcast & appreciated the more reasoned approached from Benny from memory. Irrational, emotional ramblings are simply going to be battered away by Pert and administrators of that ilk. Come armed with information, supporting evidence & get him to speak to it... no s**t the supporters are [censored] off, I don't think he needs to recognise that on a podcast for us to understand.

Well done to the Deebrief crew, I really liked it. Would also like Bartlett on as I feel like he may be able to be cracked open a little more than Pert who did this all before with Collingwood and knows very well where to draw the line.

See, to me, the players can absolutely be the tail wagging the dog here.

If Petracca and/or Oliver put their hands up to be traded, you can bet the club, as a business, will make the call to the AFL and they'll get rid of Goodwin. Clubs are on a knives edge in the COVID environment. I'd be staggered if they haven't already broached all these options with the AFL much earlier this year.

Did Pert actually say YES he will be coaching next season SFebes or did he talk around it like a good politician would?

Why would he go on a fan podcast and say he wouldn't be coaching?

Even if that was the plan, he would never discuss it publicly.

I know that but I was interested in seeing if he said yes to the question.

Positives on getting a home base & talking sense on field success brings success off field, should have gone harder on why so many assistant coaches changes? McCartney departure, why Richardson? Why hasn’t Goodwin been able to achieve the ruthlessness in his playing group after 4 years which he is seeking? Do we lack Steele in the group as highlighted by footy commentators?

The whole interview was pretty typical of an experienced club CEO.

Most of it was very straight bat.

He didn’t really give any information on any topic that provides us more than what we already know/assume to be the case.

He certainly did not say Goodwin will be coaching round 1 next year, danced around that one

Sure but no one's listening.

We've heard it before.

As you would say, the scoreboard says it all the rest is just fluff from an institutionalised corporate suit

Yeah i remember now lol....Is that the only other chance we had, i have feeling we another chance to cement it

Yes we lost to the lowly Saints earlier at the G in Rnd 15 by two points.  A game which we never truly looked like winning.  The MFC has an uncanny way of pulling out a loss when you most expect it ie;  when it is expected to win.

It is worth highlighting that the Saints had only won two of their thirteen matches prior to beating us in this match, losing 75% of their matches by an average of 6 goals, including Rnd 7 earlier in the year to us by over 6 goals.

Their first win was their opening round encounter with the Lions, who only finished one place above the Saints in 15th place.  And their only other win to that point was against the even worse Suns (finished in 17th) the week before, by a miserly 2 points.

The Saints finished the year in 16th place.

We were in 6th place prior to this match and only one game behind 4th place (Collingwood) and Port (5th) at that stage with the 2nd best percentage (127%), only bettered by Richmond (135%).

We then fell two matches behind those sitting from 2nd through 6th (Collingwood & Port moving two matches ahead of us after dropping this), pretty much killing off a chance of securing a top 4 place and the double chance.

I have no doubt that Pert has a crystal clear view on the risk of retaining Goodwin and he was never going to share that view with the Deebrief or any any media for that matter.
He and the board are in regular contact, the increasing damage being done to membership and sponsorship are being weighed up against stability and keeping faith with the plan.
In my opinion, Goodwin will stay but assistants will be shuffled in and out. 2021 will be the test.
good interview and well done to the deebrief boys.

I like to know what support Goodwin will have in 2021 if  wins are not on the board early  e.g.   1 win and  5  L     Alarm bells  I would IMO.    I am sorry to say he would be treading water.

We lost consecutive games to the 13th and 14th placed sides, with a guaranteed finals place on offer.

The season ended last round, and it was BAD

Looking forward to the phone call from a player chasing the 3 memberships I am cancelling tomorrow. My 32 yr old son told me in a phone call this week that he is thinking of buying a Gold Coast membership next season. I didn't laugh at him. I simply wished they had a better guernsey in case I decided to do the same.

[censored] this loser club. I've had enough.

Soft interview. Lots of platitudes. And it left me even more unhappy.

Here are two things which I think are rubbish.

(I am trying to remember what Pert said, but these won't be verbatim)

1. No coach goes out to do anything less than his best

2. When we play at our best or near our best, we can beat the top sides.

ok, they sound all right, but for #1, SG doing his best isn't necessarily enough. We want THE best coach and Goodwin's best might be well short of that.

And which team in the AFL when playing at their best or near best can't beat the top sides? We want to be so good that we win even when we're not at our best. Like Richmond and Geelong have recently done.

i sincerely hope Pert's real approach to our future is just being masked by the politically correct answers he has given. We want to be more ruthless, right? Maybe we start with the coach.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
