Eh?

Freo gave up a first and second round pick to get Bennell

They chased him for years just like they did Hogan

Sorry my mistake, picks 16 and 35 but received 22 back.

My initial point has been lost anyway and doesn’t relate to Bennell in anyway (although I did suspect it may go over posters heads who would subsequently bring him into it). My point was that Fremantle chased Hogan for quite some time however less than 18 months after signing they were looking at letting him go.

Yer, sadly bell would try something insane like that?

He also doesn't sook so much outside of the forward line, I have to agree I never liked the sooking.

Just a thought...

We’ve all seen the lack of connection between our midfield and forwards the last 2 years. Any chance Jesse had a reason to be upset, and actually helped cover over that glaring issue during his time at the club?

I’d love him back. We need natural competitors with skills.

When up field, Jesse's ability to pick the right option and deliver neatly was very impressive.

And as much as his set shot action was disjointed, he was pretty reliable in front of goals, which is something that cannot be said for many of our forwards now. If I see Weid or Fritter miss another straight forward set shot from 35m I will blast a hole on my tv screen!

Having said that, the only way I would want Jesse back is if he has a baby with a long term partner and becomes a Mormon.

There may be an obvious answer to this question which escapes me right now, but who was the last player to leave Melbourne for another VFL/AFL club and then come back? Anyone since Carl Ditterich?

I appreciate that it happens rarely across the competition, although there have been some notable exceptions, such as G Ablett Jr, Paul Salmon, John Barnes and Trent Croad. But it's rare and, I suspect a guide to suggest that it won't happen this time, either.

RDB came back as coach does that count

Gary Hardeman left to go play for Sturt in the SANFL before returning for final season in 81.   Can't think of a recent player though.

Would he come back all tried and tested and clear under a new coach? I wonder....

That means he would have to wait for at least 2 years and probably longer if he had any desire to come back.

Could that mean partners? Would make him twice as settled and he's already used to being double-teamed.

Oi!  Don't forget there was some time at the mighty Sale Footy Club in there as well!!

And he could live on a Big Love styled compound!

I just have this feeling the the Hawks are going to pick him up for a fourth round pick...

That hasn't gotten them far the last few years, their list is shot!

Crackers Keenan maybe?

Good get. Keenan (with the fabulous full name of Peter Patrick Pius Paul Keenan) played for Melbourne in 1970-75 and then again in 1981-82. Big Carl's last year with us was 1980.

Has there been anyone since?

It's been a real brain teaser! Something I just expected would have happened at least once since then.

He had reason but I still don't think it's a good look on field. To be clear, I'd take him back.

So many elements of fantasy in this thread.

One of them unmentioned though: Bell in  the end had his hand forced in taking on and coughing up for Jesse. Based on Bell's behaviour to date, I can't see any scenario where he would trade Hogan back to us for peanuts.

It would be too much of a loss of face (and please - that's not intended as an Asian stereotype). No way he would give up pick six (plus swaps) and take a fourth round pick from the same team as recompense two years later.

He would get crucified by the very same fans who forced his hand in the first place.

Hogan met with Bell ? told he is not in beat 22 hogan does not want to go to the QLD hub from next week

Surely hes done at Freo then.

Interesting times ahead.

If he wasn't named Harley Bennell, and we were just talking about some bloke from Freo with off field issues, injury problems and who is struggling for a game so badly that he's possibly being switched ends; there's no way this thread is going the way it is so far.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
