I honestly don’t know what some of you want from Garry. He is a club legend and former captain.
he is in the media. I hear his comments as a frustrated supporter, basically like one of us commentating. You are always harder on those you love. Like if your son plays in the team you coach.
if he started praising us and going on about it, it would be weird and he’d loose credibility as a media guy

He was lightning quick to leap to AVB's defence of his collision with Mihochek. I'll give him a point for that. On balance though I'd be more than happy to not hear him commentate our games. He may feel conscious of perceived bias and thus overcompensates the other way.

No he should back us instead of doubting us.  He's a total pain.

He was playing his role as a commentator.   The role he is paid for.   Eddie and a few others could take a leaf.

I’ve mentioned it on this forum several times but you wouldn’t know he once played for Melbourne. Has to be one of the most critical and negative person towards the dees.

I think he tries too hard not to seem biased and goes a little the other way, which can be a little frustrating to listen to.

You have to respect him as an icon of the club but he is overtly and unnecessarily  negative in his commentary - bloody hard to listen to in fact.

I don’t entirely agree. He is doing an expert commentary job, so has a responsibility to be objective. He also has insights which he wouldn’t have without that Demon background. He was clearly delighted during our run in 2018. I remember him and Paul Roos commentaries - two very happy people. When we are playing well his analysis is nuanced and insightful. It will be interesting to see what he says on Monday night “On the Couch”.

He’s the first to point out how woeful we were against Port, yet finds it so hard to praise us after three 10 goal wins

It’s embarrassing that he doesn’t give us credit when it’s due

I think he just overcompensates when calling our games, to the point where Melbourne fans view him as ultra negative. I think he tries to avoid bias so hard that he actually comes across as if he is barracking for the opposition. It’s very frustrating and like Eddie did a few years ago, he should not call Melbourne games.

I love grumpy Garry. Not afraid to call it as it is sometimes with some of our players and some of the teams faults.

Gets nervous during games like I bet most of us do. I certainly do.

Yes he had moments of negativity but did everyone upset miss how effusive some of his praise was of the performance? He was clearly enjoying several parts of the game too.

Lyon is the voice of the frustrated supporter.
Hates how historically flaky we are as do I.
See players doing dumb sheet with poor skills and calls it with exasperation.
I'm certainly not gonna hold it against him.

The club needs to earn the supporters trust and they've never done it.
Not since I've been alive anyway.

Beat me by that much ?

His comments are based on our history and how we need to change to become consistent.  No problem with what he says as he wants us to succeed so he is harder on us than others, yes he thinks like a supporter and shows his frustration.

Some like Eddie are so one eyed about their club and they play into it. Others like Garry go the other way and are overly critical so as not to appear biased. I don't think that is reflective of his true feelings about the team/club but it is frustrating as it plays into the stereotype about the club (soft underbelly, pushovers etc)

Also he's probably been burnt putting his neck out for the club before so would be very cautious about how much praise he dishes out.

I hate it but I get it.

If he is objective he would point out occasionally where we missed a free or how we tried to set up play. he sure points out our oppositions failures to get a free kick. He is obsessed with us not converting inside 50 which stymied him tonight because we did. He brings up good points often as a commentator but could praise us now and again. He was on cloud 9 when Port [censored] on us.

Read through the game day thread and see if the majority of us doubted us.

The content is fine, it's the quantity of talking that [censored] me. Him and Riewoldt basically had an hour long conversation over the top of play, for the entire 2nd half.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

A couple of Demonland Trackwatchers headed down to Gosch's Paddock to bring you their observations from today's training session before the Demons head off to Perth for their final Practice Match. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Beautiful morning, not much wind, more than a couple of dozen spectators.  The players were up and about, boisterous and having fun. THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
