He might be annoyed, but he was a very late call up to our list.  He's probably just stoked to be given a third crack at it.

It will be one of Smith, Tomlinson or Jackson in for Tom Mac.  Maybe Jones can also sneak in somewhere, but not sure who for or where they would decide to play him.

It will be interesting to see how they structure the bench out of the 8 named.

For me, Fritsch would be the only certainty to be there. Toss up on all the others.

jetta and McDonald out for Jackson and Jones.

Was Brown by chance one of the ones who didn't go up immediately? Might be a reason why (if not somewhat surprised, but as long as we win i'll be happy).

Not a huge fan of brown but with Tmac out I think he has to play otherwise Weid will cop too much heat.

Weid plus Jackson/Tomlinson/Smith forward doesn't fill me with confidence.

If I had to guess, I would say Smith because the football department seem to love him and there's no room for him down back.  (Unless he comes in as a small defender for Jetta)

Jackson for T Mac   - LJ can run up the wings and take one of their defenders away from the 50

Jones for Melksham   - Melksham has had enough chances

I thought it worked well in the first quarter with McDonald leading further up the ground, with Weideman deeper. For that reason, I thought Brown would be a better fit than Jackson. Maybe Tomlinson to come in instead to play that role.

I agree.  But is tomlinson able to take contested marks - he seems to have gone out of the side due to lacking the competitiveness we require

Just the one change for mine. Jackson for TMac.

Cant see Jetta playing, especially with Lockhart locked in to the starting 18 in the back pocket.

I'm excited by this... the safe option is Tomlinson, with no guarantee, but Jackson will be exciting from a Melbourne supporters perspective with even less of a guarantee, and Smith could be exciting up forward and even less of a guarantee than Jackson...

Plenty of risky moves from Goodwin and co in selection.

Hawks have named Ceglar in their starting 22 but "AFL.com.au understands Ceglar – who has led the ruck for the Hawks this season – broke his toe early in last week's loss to Collingwood and will miss at least one week"Ceglar's broken toe.

Clarkson playing mind games!  Either Ceglar's injury report was a furphy or a late change coming up!

We should thrash their team.  They are old or have players with recent injury issues.

They played short kick/mark, ring-a-ring-a-rosey in their back 50 last week like Cats vs us.  But unlike Geelong they didn't try to attack because they can't run/chase.  Too slow!

And do they have any recognised forwards other than Gunston?

Big question is will they come out all guns blazing after the blowtorch they received this week?

If we show last weeks composure and move the ball quickly we will win.  We have a much better team.

I'd like to see Jones in there somehow. Still think he has a bit to give.

I know it's not all about possessions but Lockhart must be doing some scintillating work off the ball that isn't evident on TV

Tomlinson in for TMac; Jones or ANB in for Melksham; maybe Smith for Jetta

Jackson for Tmac , Tomlinson isn’t a forward

Tomlinson is a seriously good KPD if given the opportunity. Will enable May to go forward and provide that "contest" the coaching staff are always after, in the air.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
