Dr.D 1,771 Posted September 3, 2020 Posted September 3, 2020 I'd say every single key position player in the tac cup is currently better than Oscar McDonald. 1 Quote

While he still looks a little like a deer in headlights with ball in hand, and he doesn't really give us anything on the rebound, he did do a pretty good job defensively on Papley. He was never beaten one on one and you can see the desire and effort there. He had more of that than many others last night. He deserves another run ahead of someone like Oscar, but Tomlinson was good down back as well, and I don't think we can have May, Lever, Tomlinson AND Smith in the same defence. 2 Quote
kallangurdemon 551 Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 I didn't post yesterday because commenting on Oscar would have been too stressful .His journey at this club beggars belief .He has been an absolute spud from day one and a laughing stock of the competition but has remained on our list for 6 years .He is not an Isaac Weetra whose ineptness was realized after 1 game and then sensibly delisted .He is not a Brad Miller who was played week after week constantly struggled but always gave it his best shot .He is an absolute liability who has shown nothing in 6 years .But yet posters defend him and rubbish Clayton Oliver and Jack viney who would run through a brick wall for the club .This is not Demonland .This is Bizarroland where the worse you are the more you are appreciated. 6 Quote

DemonOX 8,857 Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 NEVER to play for us again. My 8 year old has more aggression, strength and footy smarts that Omac. He still basically plays the same as when he started. Should of kept Dunny. 1 Quote

BDA 23,048 Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 I think OMac is unfairly maligned. He’s purely a depth player and not the reason why we win or lose. Yes he’s limited and prone to brain fades but he’s serviceable in the 3rd tall defender role. I don’t think he should have played yesterday but that’s a selection mistake by Goodwin. I want to know where our A-graders were last night. Petracca can be forgiven because he’s been very good this year but the rest have no excuse. Quote

layzie 34,528 Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 That moment on the back flank he did the best job of judging the ball off the boot and peeling off his opponent to get separation only to have the ball somehow bounce off his chest. That was his day in a nutshell. 1 Quote

Agree. In 2019, Jesse Clark was captain of Geelong Falcons under 18s. Saw him place twice last year and thought he’d get drafted. Strong confident, smart, good size good skills on the rebound and decent pace for tall defender. Plays with the confidence of Sam Collins. Yet overlooked. Cannot believe McSpud gets game after game yet young blokes like Clark get overlooked. 1 Quote

A decent intercept market, but Tom McDonald-like with ball in hand. You're not a fan of either of them? Hore is a far better defender than OMac and Smith. The kicking is a problem but not as bad as you're suggesting. 1 Quote

Being in and out of the side hasn't helped him. Was among our best in the first game, against West Coast, and then as i remember didn't make the team the next time they played. Can't have been good for the confidence. Did best when he played week-in week out in the latter part of 2018 - including very solid games at full back in the 2 MCG finals we won. Over and above that, the abuse hurled at him - vicariously, form the safety of a keyboard - is distasteful, and gutless. Got nothing to do with 'winning flags'. Its about fair and hopefully constructive comment. 1 1 1 Quote

Its about fair and hopefully constructive comment. I don’t think being in an out of the team would help anyone’s confidence and would clearly increase the fear of failure in players which wouldn’t help. Still, you need to look at it the other way also and see that he’s had plenty of chances in the team but still is nowhere good/consistent enough. His marking yesterday was awful and a couple odf intercept drops resulted directly in scoring chains. This is what frustrates me the most in his game. He’s tall but doesn’t play like a big. He offers little once the ball hits the deck, he offers nothing on the rebound, he offers little as an intercept player and minimal in the air other than the occasional spoil. I want him to play well as he seems a lovely chap who has copped so much very harsh criticism along the journey but the reason for this is that he’s not good enough and continues getting picked when everyone knows he’s not good enough. He doesn’t pick himself obviously and therefore doesn’t deserve what he cops but he definitely doesn’t help himself with poor errors continually. If he was still 18 years old I’d cut him some more slack but he’s now mid 20’s with 6 pre seasons under his belt and still plays as well as he did in 2014. Unfortunately for Oscar he really just isn’t good enough imo but good on him so far, he’s played more games than I ever got to. I still believe there are better options as potential rookies or running around in the state leagues that would add more than Oscar. Quote
Pates 9,697 Posted September 4, 2020 Posted September 4, 2020 I've had patience with him and even defended him at times, but yesterday was the final straw for me. He became a liability to the team, so much so that we threw him forward in a vein attempt to mix things up though it looked more like an attempt to hide him. Some of the blame has to go to the selection committee though, in some rare circumstances he can be of limited value as a stopper, but most on here were downright bemused by his selection against Sydney coupled with bringing in Smith. Anyway, I would like to see us shop him around at season's end. I don't think I can stand seeing him in the team anymore. 1 1 Quote
