Am I mistaken - the trade was 2019 picks 26 and 50, plus 2020 first rounder, for pick 8 (which eventually became Pickett)

The trade was sensible at the time and the 2020 draft is a total pot-luck mess.

Also, we're just a few rounds in to the weirdest season ever.

Yep, it's kick the Demons week, that's all to this story.

Reasons why this is a terrible story.

1: Kossie Pickett.

2: Heavily compromised 2020 draft.

3: Free second and third round picks.

4: Kossie Pickett.

Might be a good time to merge all of the disaster and impending doom related threads into one big one now.

Pick 8 became 3 picks:  Kozzie (pick 10) and Rivers (pick 28) and Carlton's 2020 4th round pick.

So overall the initial deal with North looks fine to me.

Would we get a Kozzie and Rivers this year if we kept our 2020 first rounder.  Doubt it.

Ralph is just headline click baiting.

You are ignoring the part where we also gave up pick 26 and 50 to the Kangas so it is not fair of you to include Rivers as we would have had him regardless.

If we don't make the finals, it's a [censored] trade.

It’s only a bad trade if the players we took turn out to be worse than the players Nth take.

If Pickett is the next Cyril Rioli and Nth takes the Toumpas, then we win.

Cant judge any trade before the players take the field.

Its heading that way.

Could possibly wind up handing over pick 1. That would be disaster.

Plenty of water to go under the bridge first.

I'm happy with what we did last year.  Hopefully we can get a few wins on the board and at least make the North pick land outside the Top 4, but as someone mentioned above, we won't know the outcome until years down the track.  North might end up with Sam Walsh or Cale Morton.

Well if it means Goody's head, not to mention some serious changes to the FD, i'd argue that the positives of bringing about some much needed changes would outweigh an 18 year old kid coming into our system to stuff up.

Bringing in a decent coach with half a clue would far outweigh a #1 pick IMO. In fact, i'd also give up next year first round pick if it resulted in ousting our several of our coaches.

No we would have already picked them.

Not for mine, if the next Judd goes the pick after North's that's the opportunity we have missed out on.

Not unhappy with Pickett, but this trade is dependent on where we finish and the opportunity we have missed. If it's a Ben king quality player, we are losers, if it's Paddy Dow, then good call. Not all drafts are made even but it's not looking good at this stage.

A long time ago my father told me if you lead with your chin someone will punch it.

Kozzie is a good (and important pick) no matter what the cost has been, it's up to the cub and the team to balance out the worth by pulling their collective fingers out. As @Axis of Bob has also said, this year the draft will be heavily compromised because of COVID. It's still going to suck if we finish low but I actually liked the club backing themselves in to make the pick a 10> pick, it's a rare piece of bold strategy.

The disaster is the team (and right now the coach), not the trade.

The problem won't be whether we have a 1st round or not this year.

The problem will be whether we selected the right type of player at pick 3. I am a Jackson fan and think he'll be a good solid player. I'm starting to question whether we made a mistake on not selecting players with quality kicking skills in Young, Stephens and Ash.

Was an up and coming young ruckman that's going to take 5 years to develop really what we needed at pick 3?

Regarding the Kozzie pick, this will turn out to be a steal. Don't underestimate how good this kid can be. Already reminds me of a mix of Eddie Betts/Charlie Cameron.

You can just see it happening.

We finish bottom 4 and give the pic to North.

We win again, it’s the melb way unfortunately.

So, I think it doesnt matter where we finish.  We got Kozzie (plus change).  He was an absolute need, and we are unlikely to see his type for a while.

Then, add COVID.  Kids in the draft this year are almost 12 months under-developed to normal draft years, so we will have 2 years of Kozzie before the kid North get probably is ready to go.

Then, add the fact that the draft is apparently compromised with all of the F/S and academy picks. We could have been bidder way down anyway.  And we have less of an idea who is likely to be top of the pops as there is no quality competition to see who is developing into the next Rowell.  Early calls are going to have to stand.

It is beat up the Dees week, which I am very happy about.  If Kozzie takes the next step, takes that mark or kicks those goals, he will be worth way more than a chooklotto kid.  We also dont have a great record at making high picks work....

Yes. DD36 We are in sync. We didn’t need Jackson. We have Gawn who has 5-6 years more. And in after 3-4 years of development, Eagles or Dockers will offer three bags of gold to get him back to WA. Could have got Green or Ash who are ready made and show great signs already.

Pickett is a ripper. Be patient this year. He’s electric. Mentor and guide but just let him rip.

Pickett would become one of the leagues best players at any other club.  The only way this trade doesnt work out for us is if we screw Kozzies development , which I am afraid to say has a 95% chance of happening.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

  • PREVIEW: Western Bulldogs

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
