Don't disagree with the outs, I just wonder if we will bring Jones in given he didn't play in the scratch match due to soreness.

Pig's return to form has been one of the few lights (along with Petracca), I'd be looking at dropping Lockhart and bringing back Jetta.

As a different thought (and throwing the magnets around a bit) we could bring back Oscar (cue collective groan from D-Land) and shift Smith into a forward role allowing us to stay with the three you've dropped, along with Lockhart for Jetta.

To sum up my Ins and Outs would be:
IN: Weid, Bennell, Omac, Jetta
Out: Melksham, Hunt, AvB, Lockhart

It would look something like this:

B:      Jetta                O McDonald               Hibberd

HB:   Lever                May                             Salem

?    Langdon         Viney                          Tomlinson

HF:     Hannan           T McDonald             Bennell

F:        Pickett            Weideman                Fritsch

R:       Gawn              Harmes                        Petracca

Int:     Brayshaw      Rivers           Smith                 Oliver

This.

please forward to Goodwin + MFC

I like it and it's exactly what we need.

Smith lucky to hold his spot, but dear lord please don't play him back

It's true that he's more slight than a lot of players of his height, but he has an additional 5cm and 8kg on Joel Smith, who hovers in that no mans land of being undersized for a key defence slot and not agile enough to lockdown the smalls.

I think at least trying Brown at CHB will straighten us up plenty and hopefully allow Lever to play his natural game, while May handles the number one forward.

The fact that he can go forward when required and if match ups allow, would be a huge bonus IMO. At the moment we just don't have enough talls in the side to even think about swinging one back or forward.

Good comments and I agree at the back of my mind. There is some potential there - a given 'swing' role offers much to players like Browne.

All I want to see are a few changes.  I'm a fan of the continuity aspect, but I think we are carrying a few and we need to give some others a crack.

We need an extra tall forward, and we need to freshen things up inside 50.

I'd be giving one of Weid/Brown/Jackson a crack, and I'd also look at Bennell and ANB to slot in there somewhere.  So, for me it would be:

In:  Weid/Brown/Jackson, Bennell, ANB

Out:  AVB, Hunt, Melksham

He's also been talked up on Demonland as a capable forward.

In both instances, he has weeks where he looks good and weeks where he goes completely missing.

His main issue is consistency and I don't think it matters whether it's back or forward. Personally, if we've spent the past two years working on him as a forward, he should stay a forward, but should only be playing AFL if he's capable of contributing on a weekly basis (same goes for everyone else of course, including Melksham).

Hunt can trick the brain ( mine at least) .  All it takes is several ball-bouncing runs along the wing and one can go home thinking " this lad is a future star " . Next day , reading his full stats -  reality hits . The last two rounds he has had five and four disposals respectively .

I've said it a number of times we need 3 tall forwards, with one being a mobile lead up forward to provide and outlet or create space out the back.

In: Weid, Brown, Bennell

Out: hunt, avb, Melksham

I don't think we will change the backline.... Yet.

Viney, Brayshaw and Oliver put on notice.

It would be a tough gig being an MFC selector specially as they have managed to get it wrong so many times. in the last few seasons I think we have lost the game on Thursday evening when the team is announced. This season we seem to be going to extremes to highlight just how bad we are at selecting a side.

One out tall forward with a game plan and skills that do not support such a structure. In no one's mind has this looked like working or even looked to have the potential to work. Part of this problem is the form of TMac and the other part of the problem is, as mentioned, the mythical game plan and lack of skill to deliver the ball properly into the forward 50.

The MFC really needs to get back to the basics in selection to have a proper base line to work from.

To my mind this means the following:

Three key defenders - May Lever and OMac

Three inside mids - Petracca. Oliver and Harmes

Three key Forwards - TMac, Weideman and Pickett

Ruck - Gawn

Fill in the spaces around these keys.

Backs: Lever, May, Jetta

Half Backs: Hibberd, OMac, Hunt

Center: Langdon, Oliver, Tomlinson

Half Forward: Jones, TMac, Fristch

Forwards: Pickett, Wiedeman, Melksham

Ruck: Gawn, Petracca, Harmes

I/C: Viney, Brayshaw, Bennell, ANB

I like this but the main aim here is to convert F50 entries. The center line of Langdon Viney Tomlinson can't be trusted to kick inside 50. Make the center line Salem Petracca Melksham. Deadly kicks into 50.

Langdon and Tomlinson seem to have some new draftee immunity??? Who are these guys? Blasting away not connecting inside 50. Dropped!

Goody needs to pick the most dangerous sharp-shooting team he has. Build it again out of sweet kickers and x-factor forwards...

FF: Smith Weed Kozzy

HF: Hannan Fritsch Bennell

? Salem Petracca Melksham

HB: Hunt Lever Hibberd

FB: Jetta May Rivers

R: Gawn Oliver Bray

Int: Viney Jones Van Harmes

I'm curious to know, since you're dropping Tommo and Langdon, what exactly has Hunt done in the last two weeks to warrant selection?

Hunt and vdberg surely cannot stay in.  Weid and Bennell are surely replacements with Jones and Jetta possibles.  Melksham definitely on notice!!

Agree with all this except Hunt over Salem. Hunt has done nothing the last fortnight, far to irregular a performer for me and across half back he runs himself into trouble and is prone to turnovers via his kicking.

Unfortunately Tommo jibbed a few contests last week and was very soft on a few tackles, that ended up costly. That won't go unnoticed and I would expect he is spoken to during the week.

Where did Hunt play his best footy? Has he been played there at all lately? I would rather Hunt than AVB and atm Melksham, who has been abysmal.

I would rather anyone than melksham. And that is frustrating because he is od the most talented players in the team.  And he should be a leader. But is playing selfish football.

It’s nice to see so many have picked themselves up from the floor (where I imagine most of our comments on the “Closer To The End” thread were typed from), and resumed some of the regular muses and suggestions that allude to some kind of future.

You must go on. I can’t go on. I’ll go on - Samuel Beckett (probably a Dees supporter).

Could not agree anymore if I tried.

Life goes on is a redundancy. Life is defined by its going on.

Yeah. Thought long about that position. For me it all gets back to playing players in positions they have excelled in in a structure that allowed them to excel. Was a toss up for me between ANB and Salem on the bench. Would not mind either

If that is the case then Goody truely has NFI.

Except that the team is selected by a committee.

Hunt hasn't done much as a forward. But I believe that he and TMac are career defenders. Play them in position, then I'll judge their form. Sure they can swing a little but they aren't suited forward.

It would be great if we had blokes picking themselves with their performance.

At present, almost every position on the ground could be debated and reasonably argued.

Trac, Max, May and maybe Hibberd are my only guaranteed starters. Hibberd is only based on last week's game too. Every other spot is a raffle

Come on Goody

We all make errors, but time to get this one right and follow the concensus view

And just name a team, none of this squad rubbish

Finally please do not fire up the mids in a way where to make amends they go pack ball hunting.

I am sure the head coach would have a very big say bing.

You know that the AFL requires teams playing on a Sunday to name an extended squad don't you? It's not an MFC decision.

Fair enough, obviously I would not have said it if I had known,  but that doesnt make it any less stupid.

At least this week we will get the actual team rather than an extended squad

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
