POSTGAME: Rd 04 vs Geelong

Demonland

Recommended Posts

either both sides were very ordinary or both sides were very mediocre or both sides were very bad or both sides were very good

i think it was sort of somewhere in between

ugly contest played between two evenly-matched defensive sides; reminded me a lot of the tiggas v the filth game on resumption

neither side could really effectively break down the other's defensive structures

it was a seesawing battle of skill error and general ineptitude

i was expected to get absolutely hammered, so technically we did far better than i expected

still disappointing, but we've had the weirdest start to the resumption of any club, having also had our rd 1 effected as we knew the season was in jeopardy before we took to the field

gonna be a weird old year

I agree that we make costly mistakes and cough up simple goals, BUT we go forward just about more than any other side, and there is absolutely no method to our attack, which is largely on Goodwin, especially due to the fact that it’s been the same story for the last 18 months.

Coupled with a forward line that is the worst in the league.

Im not off us, but I am not expecting the world until we are more reliable.

Kossi looks nice though.

Sadly Brisbane have proven to surpass us for now. I hope we can find that 2018 form again because these Queenslanders are obnoxiously cocky right now.

Coached by a very good coach in Chris Fagan. The guy that Neale Daniher speaks highly about his time when they were successful.

God i miss those days.

God that was tough to watch.

1, Tmac presented way more, this is a positive. Brown in for Melksham, Fritsch to fwd pocket.

2, Poor bastards are out of touch, is this the coach or two serious games in 10 months, breathe folks.

3, Goodwhen is like the anti-Neeld, he needs to find a compromise as the pendulum has swung too far the other way. Kudos to Waynewussel for calling for calm, but I just really would like to see a 'run' option game plan that uses our so called Burgess fitness. Or something, anything, this rabbit in the headlights instinct the players have developed terrifies me.

4, I really don't care what the whole footy world thinks, they can GAGF. These Einsteins thought the Sun's would be the spoon. Our list is not that bad, it is just about buying some belief, (could you tell me where it is for sale please?).

5, Lever needs touch, his 2018 was like this as well, he gets another game.

Ugh those last 2 plays were shocking. Tomlinson was never going to kick that goal. At best he should have centered. Yes it may not have resulted in a goal but Gawn was down there pickett was circling. At least give thema  chance.

Salem then chose to go wide when 3 cats players were there. Again just get it to the square.

In the 3rd quarter we went back to handballing and instead of someone owning it to kick at the goals they kept handballing it around. Viney and Oliver both had chances to kick but chose to handpass.

Inaccurate kicking again.

He only missed by the length of my [censored]!

Man on man defence is hard work but aren’t we supposed to be fitter than ever? Only time we manned up was in the last three minutes - result was a turnover and Brayshaw goal. Allowed a slower older average team to dominate for long periods by persisting with guarding grass. Also Gawny is one of my favourites but he doesn’t seem to have any communication with our mids.
Starting to think there is only one solution to stopping our talent going backwards - Get Clarkson!!

Is he out of contract at year's end?  Would he want to?  Add Clarkson and a genuine KF plus one more classy outside winger who can hit targets with toe (ie., who we should have looked for, not Tomlinson) and we would be playing regular finals.  Might even snag one.

Enough wins? Geelong we're laying down with that chippy chippy excrement they displayed today, wow wee.

We are a mess and knowhere near the level required for finals football.

Hi W4tA. I hear what you're saying and I might feel the same in a few weeks. Right now I'm more optimistic of there being a peace settlement in the Middle East than us fixing our forward 50 entry issues. That said I've felt far worse after a loss than today and am prepared to give everyone concerned a little more time before I start burning effigies of Goody.

Give it a rest! You are no better than the leader of a lynch mob! Get some help on analysis! Stop potting the coach! You are not contributing to the club in any way! Trolling is a sub-standard existence. I'm calling you out!

Buck stops with Goody... can’t hide from the truth it’s the same issues as 2019 can’t score, invested heavily on 2 defenders & continue to have loose easy goals scored against, cam convert going forward. Understand covid has messed up every clubs preparation & the shortened game time will affect teams differently. We are a club starved of success & many clubs eg saints, Carlton, Nth, lions, suns appear to be passing us!

Attention coach assassins! Which teams in the 21st Century have won a Premiership because they changed the coach? Not saying they don't exist, just interested in the probability!

Easy question to answer . . . 2001/02/03, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018. So only 12.

If we had kicked that last minute goal I wonder if the “sack the coach” and derogatory comments about players would be here? It was 3 points guys. I think we’re going ok. A few tweaks, a bit of confidence, a bit of luck and we will be back on track. All is not lost.

Nicely entrenched in the bottom 4 where we clearly belong.

Our coach is truly a disgrace. I was waiting to see the team selections in action and boy was I right in my suspicious. Jetta for Lockhart, a miss. Played Hannan and AVB and Fritsch and Melksham which just makes no sense.

No second tall forward even tho both Weid and Jackson are fit.
Back line is also a [censored] show. People can have a go at Omac all they like, but he can actually defend. Joel Smith gives us nothing. How many times were we mismatched down back because we didn’t go in tall enough?

I am so disappointed with our game plan and selections. A fully fit list and this is the [censored] we put on the field.

Backs: Hibberd came in for Jetta and was better than Nev has been in the vast majority of games since 2018. Neither Hibberd nor Jetta have the pace or skill to play at half back these days. So you can only pick one. Lockhart started well then made some errors but overall was hardly the difference in the game. Joel Smith was excellent. Oscar couldn't make some of the spoils Joel made today and he absolutely couldn't follow up at ground level providing pressure and contributing to rebound. Yes Oscar could've taken Esava but then who takes Rohan? Who provides the pace to get up and back and can cover at ground level.

Our much maligned backline has conceded 4 goals in the open halves the last two weeks. 4 goals in 4 quarters. When the midfield and forward pressure is decent they look good to me.

Forwards: Melksham was our second tall forward. He's too lazy to be anything else but is also consistently better in the air than Jackson or Weid would be. Jackson is 6'7 but has no judgement of the ball in the air, he's a flanker in a rucks body if you're playing him forward. Weid can't hold a mark, I'd have no issue with Weid over Melksham but it's marginal at best. Play both forward and our spluttering forward pressure only gets worse - personally I think Melk should be able to play wing and Weid relief ruck and get rid of Tomlinson but I doubt that's happening. Hannan was good, best he's moved and tackled in a long time. Hunt was competitive too.

Mids: AVB gave us the extra midfield grunt and rotations on the wing to let Tomlinson do a bit of ruck and have some rest. We'd all rather a fit and healthy Harley Bennell but that was deemed not at option. The midfield composition is a big problem but I'd love to know any solutions apart from Harley and Vanders. Harmes back in at least helped the defensive efforts.

The performance in isolation isn’t the end of the world. It’s the fact that it was another game we should have won on the balance of play, yet we again showed no consistent way to goal.

Tbh, I’m not even fussed about this season, but we need to show improvement going forward before the end of the year, otherwise we should make a move imo.

I saw Tmac at more contests as a presence, I felt like he was getting to the play more. Would I like to see 8 contested grabs and 4 goals, of course I would, the point is their is improvement.

There are a few sides with rust it's a call for 3 more games before we get properly snarky about the coach.

I'd like to see a little more fire and brimstone, sometimes it feels a little to millenial the coaching. Also I don't think he would naturally be like that, his style seems a bit forced and without passion, I want passion from the coach too.

Deh, yes they have won 3 games, your point being?

Lever this season or ever? The problem with a loss is all the flaws just seem like one big issue an inch from your nose. Breathe in your own time, take a step back and look a little more calmly. Lever has for instance shown he is capable of playing...

Probably not but I think the mood would have been similar to after the Carlton game, would have papered over some cracks.

Unfortunately it’s looking  more and more that 2018 was the aberration.
The main worry for me is that we have easily the worst forward line in the league over the past two seasons.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
