The comment about their midfielders being short is a good one. Between Gawn and the size of Clarry and Trac we should have first use.

the outside is the worry. I expect tomo and langers to be important for us on the wings

A not so subtle attempt to inject their main sponsor into the discussion ?

We could offer them good insurance rates on that cheap furniture....

Doesnt matter Skuit.

As has already been pointed out, neither of them are in Fyfes league.

I actually thought it was the Australian Football League. Didn't know Fyfe owned it.

Maybe it should be called the FFL.

Agreed, they're usually a pretty arrogant bunch at the best of times.

As a collective, a more arrogant bunch of phlogs you'd be hard pressed to find.

Interesting and accurate, Gawn and Trac share something in common at some stage they both realised they wanted to be the best and have worked at it. Just a hint to the rest of the team. No doubt they will just rove to Max. Essendon's mids were good against the Swans and looked pretty fast so we will have our hands full.

Hawks supporters usually give them a run for their money! Thankfully they've been a bit quieter the last few years... Bombers supporters just have that totally unfounded, smug arrogance.

Anyway, this week is such an unknown. Got a feeling we'll beat them convincingly, but that is based on absolutely nothing.

Gawn dominated the ruck last week too and it didn't help us much once Carlton learnt to read his taps.

Exactly. This in fact happens way too often. Also ourr midfielders are messy with ball use out of the centre.

I am not so sure about their worry for Gawn and Petracca. They are Essendrug fans, and anything above two syllables is a big sentence for them.

Melbourne have pretty well had dominant ruckmen since the Northey days but it has rarely done us much good.

The position is an anachronism and is now almost solely judged on round the ground play.

I think it is a symptom of the overall crowding of the game where effective clearances are becoming increasingly rare

We should set up outside for the big smash forward, like Jeff White used to.  Give us a variation that will be hard to counter if Gawn has dominance.

I almost agree with that except for those ruck taps that go straight to a running mid who can break away. Gawn -> Petracca is my favourite combination atm. It gives such an advantage and opens up the field.
Don’t think it is a complete coincidence when that dominance stop last week our scoring also dried up

Brayshaw in those late games of 2018.... but alas not very often

and of course White with his twenty metre hits forward

Hawks v Tigers tonight ... no dedicated rucks

Now we have some pacy players,  I'd like to see Kozzy and Bennell start at the front edge of the square.  If Max ever smashes the ball forward,  we could be in the box seat.

Agree 'FND'.

Also having the dominant ruck,  stops our young Mids from having to work as hard as other opposition Mids,   so can impact their development in a negative way.

I'd like to see Max go forward to the pocket more often (rest deep),  to allow either Jackson or Weide to spend more time in at the centre bounce,   just to change things up,  and to allow our inside players to workout how best to adapt,  when Maxy isn't there,  and to train them to be smarter, and more vigorous.

They're getting an easy ride atmo.

If I was a Hawthorn supporter I would have seen 12 flags in my lifetime.
I'd be arrogant too.

And reckon the Bombers will beat us.
'Cause that's what they do.
I'm still scarred from when they beat us with most of their side out from drug suspension .... Twice.
In the pre-season and again during the season.
A typically embarrassing black blotch against our name.

There seems to be a habit between these two sides of the underdog winning in recent years, we're the underdog this year so maybe that could be a good sign.

That would require Goodwin to realise his current setup isn't working and needs to be modified as the game progresses and the oppo coach makes moves

This does not and will not happen. We unfortunately seem have a lame game day coach in my humble opinion.

Looks like this thread found its way over there.

What they're saying down at Windy Hill (Pregame) 45

Melbourne folded like cheap furniture against FC. We should ■■■■■■■ smash them. Gawn must be rolling on the floor laughing at Bellchambers today. Phillips needs to come in to provide more of a contest around the ground for Gawn. I’d consider two...

And....

 • That Demonland page is actually pretty well balanced. As barnz said, they are expecting their team to ■■■■ it up just as much as we are.

Part of me finds these "what they are saying over at ...." threads cringe worthy, but another part of me finds it somewhat interesting and amusing.  The underlined comment is a pretty generous statement I feel.

Would be interested in how they are dealing with the pre-game loss of Dyson Heppell.  To me I've never really thought of him as being a particularly damaging player, so I'd be surprised if they are having kittens about it.  I'd have to qualify that I haven't watched many non MFC games or paid much attention to other teams at all lately, so I'm probably waffling crap.  Conversely people from either side could also make the case that Viney isn't particularly damaging, yet on his day he can be and if he were a withdrawal, he would leave something of a hole in our intensity around the ball.

They have every right to feel confident about Sundays game.

We went missing after 1/2 way through the second Qtr against an undermanned Carlton and the less said about round 1 the better.

EFC's wins have both been by small margins, but they have also not spent a minute of either of those games behind on the scoreboard.

Add in our completely dysfunctional forward line and they should start favorites.

It might be a good game.

I rate Heppell, Balls!  My brother is a Bombers man so I've seen a bit of them.  While he can turn it over from time to time, he gets it frequently, is very courageous and is a great leader.  They play much better when he's on that's for sure.  I think he's a huge loss for them and it's a shame because he's a decent bloke too!  A terrible injury as well.  No guarantee to play again this year.

Windy Hill, also known as Essendon Bowls club.

That was the day it was confirmed the Bombers weren't a power anymore when the bowls club bullied them out of town.  Theyve been a rabble ever since.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
