Excited by this team I Haven't been this excited since the finals. I think we will have a good year. We should beat Carlton easily.

Predicted team.

B: JETTA, MAY, LEVER

HB: SALEM, SMITH, RIVERS

C : LANGDON, PETRACCA, TOMLINSON

HF: PICKETT, JACKSON, JONES

F: FRITSCH, T.MCDONALD, MELKSHAM

FOLL: GAWN, OLIVER, VINEY

IC: LOCKHART(BACK), HARMES(MID), BRAYSHAW(MID), BENNELL(FORWARD)

There us not a poor footballer in that team.

Even our debs are good players and will play their role.

Kossie led the way in Round 1 and Goody has no doubt altered his approach and deserves a perfect response.

Here's my guess with all those ins:

Jetta OMac May

Salem Smith Lockhart

Tomlinson Viney Langdon

Petracca Jackson Bennell

Pickett TMac Fritsch

Gawn Oliver Brayshaw

Jones Rivers Harmes Melksham

Lever (Knee)

Interesting DJ, but with some injured player’s coming back in (Smith and VdB not far off), a couple of players who missed rnd 1 injured back in and a couple of high end draft picks and a shiny new Harley I think it is more just the natural turn over and form/better players ins and outs of that makes sense.
If it was 6 or 7 new players to the club in then you’d be spot on.

Lever is playing. The man himself confirmed this last night on “AFL Tonight”.

Based on the fact Burgess suggested in the Injury Report video that both Vanders and Bennell are knocking on the door, I hope they can find a place for Vanders in the side. Whilst I think our suggested 22's above look pretty good, I reckon we're a better team with Vanders in.

From our last game, I could see Brown, Hibbs and the half forwards being axed.  A strong message is then sent.  This allows Bennell and Jones onto HFF, Jackson to replace brown, riv to replace Hibbard.  Some further changes would see Salo onto the bench and maybe Weid.  OMac looks safe, unless Smith is preferred by Goody.

A lot of people have OMac out, everything we’ve seen in the past points to Oscar being Goody’s preferred 2nd tall defender and for that matter he actually did his job quite well vs WC.

Ill say it again, we will go nowhere with Oscar holding down a key defensive post. Handy player on occasions but would he get a game in another team Gold Coast aside? You don't build premiership teams around the likes of Oscar, Hibberd, ANB, Spargo, Hunt etc.Might sound harsh but thats IMO!

I understand the love for Lockhart but I just can’t see them axing Hibberd. Surely you give him another crack at it.

If Lockhart is left out, like many are suggesting, he would be extremely stiff.  Was one of our best performers over the whole preseason and my recollection is that he did ok in Rd 1 as well.  I'm not necessarily saying he won't be left out, because it's a pretty dam good side we have to pick from on paper.

Personally I'm betting on Lockhart retaining his spot.  I think Rivers inclusion will come at Hibberds expense.  The are both around the same height (well Rivers is actually slightly taller), with Hibbo probably being a bit stronger.  From what I have read, Rivers is rated as having good footy smarts, similar to Hibbo.  From what I have observed though, the area that Rivers really stands out is his penetrating kicking out of defense.  Whilst this was something Hibberd was once highly rated for, I think it's actually now somewhat of a weakness, with way too often his kicks going to 50/50 contests or turned straight over.  Conversely Rivers kicking out of defense is both penetrating, sublimely accurate and creative.  Good forward entries start from the back half and similarly Hibberd's rebounds that themselves get turned over and counter rebounded can really cost us.

I'd likewise see the kicking efficiency of O'Mac as one of his assets compared to Smith, but it seems like Smith may have prevailed (perhaps at Oscar's expense) on this occasion.

I was adding in Langdon and Tomlinson... so you have the three draft players and Bennell which makes 6 players who were not best 22 in 2019

On the other hand except for AVB (and maybe Petty)there is no best 22 player from 2019 that is injured. That's a big turnover. It may be deserved but it is a sad judgment on some players.

I can see May, Lever, Omac and Smith play as Lever is not really a big as such. As Gawn said in the zoom members q&a tonight he's a specialist intercept player, like McGovern and won't directly take a big.  May will but again as Gawn noted he likes to play off his man a bit too. That leaves Omac to man up Cassboult

I really rate Smith. Super pleased he is back.

I reckon Hibberd comes out, with Smith and Rivers playing across half back and Smith also being an intercept player who uses his leap to spoil packs.

I see your point though about team leaving Omac out due to pace given the shorter quarters and quick track. The may think we have their forwards covered and want to be more attacking. But even f he does get dropped i reckon Hibberd will still come out.

I really like Smith too, my only worry is having both he and Lever playing maybe gives us too many intercept types? Not sure how I feel about OMac on Casboult. Casboult is so good on the lead, I think he'd have a day out on OMac, perhaps Smith on Casboult is a better matchup? Not really sure what to think about it all to be honest, given the ins at the moment it feels like it will be a very different type of setup at this stage, so bit hard to guess.

Also - some whispers around Lockhart might not be 100% fit to play. Apparently borderline with an injury/soreness of some kind.

Hibberd has been a huge contributor and his AA inclusion was a proud moment for the club, but Lockhart is the future and must be played as often as possible. Hibberd is depth now, but quality depth indeed.

Think OMAC holds his spot to make sure May gets a match up on Mckay/McGovern and making sure Lever wont take a tall. I don't think Hibberd has shown enough over the past season plus rd 1 to warrant selection especially with Rivers in. Carlton's back 6 doesnt play tall 1 on 1 match ups so can see why Jackson gets a run here. Lockhart would be unlucky to miss, had a stinker rd 1 but has showed plenty recently and is a really good user of the footy.

Lockhart had a stinker round1 ? What year was it because it certainly wasn't this year.

Bit harsh on Lockhart having a stinker.

Spargo, Brown, Melksham, Fritsch, ANB, Gawn, Brayshaw, Oliver, Bedford and Jetta all had stinkers.

Lockhart had a good crack I thought.

Agreed. Hibberd stays in and Lockhart is unlucky because Salem returns.

Lockhart hopefully has a bright future while Hibberd is well past his peak.

However, I feel as though we need to keep a good balance between rookies and second year players (Kozzie, Rivers, Jackson and J Smith who is still inexperienced) and the importance of having plenty of seniority.

If we're cooked by August, then yes you play a Lockhart ahead of a Hibberd or even a Jetta.

One of the interesting considerations I think will come into play for backline selections is having players to lockdown both Betts and Jack Martin.  No doubt, Nev will get assigned Betts, but that will leave us needing someone to play a role on Martin.  I'm tipping that with his reported pace, Smith and/or Lockhardt might be the option for Martin.

Lockhart very stiff, but feel as though Salem is a direct replacement.

ANB, aside from kicking our first goal of the year brought nothing else to the table.

I still feel as though our forward structure falls down without a second genuine key forward supporting T Mac.

I still think Lever might be an out despite Goodwin saying he'll likely play. 5 omissions does seem a lot, although probably warranted.

Pop JSmith in at FFwd; pop TMac into CHB. Swapsies...position-wise, across the game. Give both of these players another taste of which they are proficient,

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom
