The worse thing is the Eagles didnt play well and I reckon played lazy football, they just let us turn the ball over and players were free forward of the ball.

To me eagles were going half pace and we just kept giving them the football

Our answer is Yze Goodwin can't coach. Viney our best by a mile, second best May shut down Kennedy, 1 to Oscar for his job on Darling even though I don't want him in the side Tom is a better CHB. Kossie and Bedford showed promise. Langdon is possibly the worst kicker of the ball I have ever seen and we have some shocking kickers.

Why do we keep employing people who can’t kick? Langdon and Tomlinson both butchered the ball going forward in amongst some good ball getting work. That is great but we knew we needed good ball users after last year.

I agree with everything you wrote and you can add Max to the leaders group.  Strangely lacklustre performance from the Captain in his first game in the role.

I  can't understand how coming off the back of 2019 we could come out with such a lack of intensity.  Gerard Healy made a very good point that all our midfielders tend to get possessions around each other with very few moving forward of the ball. There were a lot of examples of lazy defensive running.

We have concentrated on being a contested footy side and we are very good at that, but we have as a result ignored skill and structure/ game plan, to our detriment and it costs us games we could win, where we dominate inside 50 and still lose.

People potting OMac clearly went into the match with a pre-conceived idea and outcome.  He played well today against one of the best 2 pronged forward lines in the competition.  Not a star, but was very solid down back today.

Lockhart was great - he can hopefully play the whole season down back this year.

Kossie - he has 'IT'; a quality that we haven't had at the club for a longtime.  No matter what happens with the draft this year, we made the right choice trading into the first round with North - he's gonna be a player.

Bedford - great pace and pressure.  Not completely convinced, but showed that he could be a contributor.

May - didn't stand out with the ball in hand, but blanketed Kennedy, and that hasn't happened very often before.

Viney - responded brilliantly.  Captaincy aside, he is playing like he was before his injury.  He's completed a pre-season and now he's showing us the form and ability that won him the Best and Fairest and the captaincy in the first place.

They got told 30 mins before the game the season was on hold (but in reality likely finished).

They are on the other side of the country in a ghost town (even when not under semi lock down).

Talk here on dl that they had to move hotels.

They face a 12 hour trip home.

They are by and large a bunch of young guys.

Agree. Let's cut them some slack.

Im sure that was the speech Max was giving them to before they broke off for the first bounce.
Come on binny, that was terrible, WCE were outstanding, they sucked it up and focussed on the job at hand.

Let’s face it, Hibberd, Oscar and Spargo should never play a senior game again.

Oliver is way ahead of himself. He has become lazy.

We have no forward line. Tom McDonald is nowhere.

27 points flattered the [censored] out of us.

Yep although .. I thought Clarry worked himself into it

Vineys best game for Yonks and Langdon == VALUE

KYSIAHH REVELATION

Mc Donalds can both be Ronald!!

SPARGO SHOCKING!

had to have been max's worst game i can remember. he was thrashed by both ruckmen. never seemed to get involved and lacked any leadership..........so disappointing.........lucky it was just a clayton's game

Agreed. I was shocked to see him so easily beaten. I want to cut him and the team some slack but wc in the same boat .

Now that these spuds have a solid fitness base let's pray they spend from now until May 31st learning how to hit a target.

They're a joke and I'm glad I don't have to front up to watch them next week.

Lost count of the times we turned the ball over into our fwd line.

Same ol crapola. They have learned nothing

If not for Corona, we would be subjected to more of the same for the next 2+ months. It's definitely not a 'thank god for corona' situation, but geez it has pulled its weight in helping us to avoid certain embarrassment.

Maybe by 31 May, provided everything is ok, we will be better? We'll be better, right?

I don't think 'crapola' is used enough. But I also think it probably only applies in very certain circumstances.

But that was, in fact, crapola.

Viney was exceptional. Brayshaw shown glimpses in the second half. Petracca found plenty of it, and I thought Oliver was serviceable. May probably second best behind Viney.

To the negatives. Hibberd kicked to the opposition all day. Oscar McDonald and Spargo were equally as useless. How any of these guys are on an AFL list is baffling. Just turnover merchants. Langdon needs to sharpen up his disposal as well, otherwise the more he gets it the worse it is for us.

Sorry Pickett but clarry was disgraceful. I watched 3 WC players casually stroll out of our defence while he just casually jogged towards them.

Lazy and poor all day. His attitude needs a huge ego check. He carries on like a spoilt brat and he's been carrying that from his bushies days.

This is the time for Gawm to earn his points and pull him back into line.

One would hope they can learn to hit a target, but before that, they need to learn how to be a target; what to do, where to go, how to slip your opponent, using decoys, finding space in which to run to receive the ball and learning how to look forward to the 'movers' before dumping the ball in a long bomb without prior, trained communications.

A top 4 team did what they wanted over a bottom 4 team.  Eagles barely got out of third and they didn’t need too.

the connection they worked on all preseason clearly isn’t working.  The bomb kick into the forward 50 was so predictable.  Our link up player is Melksham and they wore him like a glove all game.

it must have been a strange feeling for the players, knowing your season is potentially over before it started.

If, If the season starts again and we play like that, the jungle drums will start for Goodwin.  I know he’s not kicking the footy, but he better play some that can kick is better then Spargo, Hibberd etc.

brayshaw, Oliver and Trac need to be shown some of their defensive efforts.

I might be on my own here, but I reckon you got to cut them some slack. I think all the uncertainty of the past 2 or 3 weeks got to them. There was no energy of the Marsh series and training pre COVID19. So I'm gunna shrug my shoulders and write this one off... NO judgement

Didn’t seem to effect the good sides this weekend. Total cop out.

Won the hard ball 118-93
Won inside 50s 45-35
Yet we continue to butcher the ball!
Yet we will hear the copy & paste speech from our coach!

The Age had Hibberd in our best players.  Hopefully that was from a journalist and not offered by the club!

Could have easily kicked 4 indeed. Only one up forward who looked threatening.

That’s called culture.... which mfc don’t have

Not making light of the health/economic crisis but when will the mfc / supporters stop making excuses?

Yeah and if so we are more of a basket case coz we either

a Lack players that are smart'

b Lack players with skills that are elite!!

We also lack a good coach.

Oliver was hopeless the worst game he's played for the club.

Poor decision making. Poor kicking skills. Poor handballing. 2019 all over again. The only thing I will say is that the game meant nothing.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.
