There's very little about our line up that excites me - i dont see us being any stronger than last year which is a real concern considering the teams around us seem to keep strengthening their squad year on year.

The big positive is that we surely can’t play any worse.

I felt our mids were pretty well out-gunned by Petracca, Oliver and Brayshaw, which was disappointing as we had them for experience. I feel that Wingard, Worpel, O'Meara and Mitchell just need time playing together. That said, our forward line looks like it needs Wingard in there applying pressure. Demon's defence had a bit of a stroll in the park.

Saints and Dees both comfotably beat our midfield

Garry Lyon is a really poor commentator. I dont mind his post match comments, but I find during matches he doesn’t talk about the game, just relentlessly criticises players and says such fatalistic stuff about players “if he can’t improve his kicking he won’t hold down a spot”. He’s the new Robert Walls.

Meh, we play rubbish against Melb most times so not a lot new. TBH, we play similar game styles to the Dees and unless we're up for it they love to find something extra when they play us. There's a few teams like that the last 4-5 years...Melb, Bullies etc

Was a "full dress rehearsal" in their words. That's what worries me.
We put the queue in the rack at 3 qtr time, coz the game was already lost.

The current lineup is too tall at both ends. I don’t like McEvoy in defence one bit, kinda defeating the whole purpose of getting Frost and Hartley.

Agree totally with this comment.  I remember their starting back six was very, very tall - McEvoy, Frost, Stratton, Frawley etc.

Patton is a sook, every little touch he carried on. I reckon you could get in his head so easy

The precipice stands right in front of the Hawks ATM.  Burgoyne unsighted, McEvoy ( 1st game back from injury), no impact.

Patten grossly unfit, was completely shot by quarter time.

Scully run off his feet firstly by Langdon, then Tomlinson.

Smith forced to play on Langdon and then did nothing during the game.

Puopolo should be retired as he had as much impact as McEvoy.

No forward line apart from Patten..........

Common factor....30ish years of age!

Oh how wonderful this is.....Now for Geelong!

Some perspective we’ve beaten Hawthorn, Adelaide and North in pre season none of whom look like they are going to be any good this year. Hawks in particular could be rubbish you can’t avoid the draft and top up with ready mades forever eventually you have to invest in the best kids....

I was concerned about Patton before the game. The bloke doesn’t have to have many shots on goal to hurt you.
What I didn’t realise is how useless he is once the ball hits the ground. Zero defensive pressure. He is a well built statue.

Defenders are going to run off him all year and Jon will be directly costing the Hawks goals down the other end. You gotta be happy about that!

Also, because of his knee injuries he can't get down low for the ground balls so defenders only need to contest and bring the ball to ground every time it goes near Patton and let the small guys go to work.

A friend of mine taught him in high school. I won’t say too much in case I get her in trouble, but she was telling me he was a giant [censored] from the get go.

Still I’m sure most of my teachers thought that about me so I take it all with salt.

So true, they got Patton and Scully for basically nothing, but really, nothing is for free. Sorry Hawks, maybe you need to do your rebuild the traditional way and experience some pain of being rubbish. Enjoy seeing your supporters lose interest.

Winning formulas all have their use by dates. It basically means your structure is dependant on players like Burgoyne, closer to 40 than 30...Last night's Hawthorn was not a pretty sight. Geelong is in the same boat: almost there, but it's been a while since they went further...

Biggest positive of the night was how [censored] Hawthorn were. I doubt they missed that many targets in the whole of 2014.
If it wasn’t for Ceglar they wouldn’t have touched the ball.

Long may it continue.

Clarkson is so afraid of bottoming out that he has left too many players past it on their list. Paul popo is a shadow of himself from 3 years ago, thought they should have delisted him in 2018, Stratton should be retired, his only on the list because they're made him captain, and are devoid of any leaders. Burgoyne should do the right thing and retire. noticed how Frost was very reluctant to kick, bet he's been told," just don't kick it".    Scully is a good player, when he's surrounded by lots of talented players like he was at GWS, Tommy Mitchell has get 40 + just for them to win.

Last year we could not even  beat side's like that,if you can beat most of the teams in the bottom 10 you're a long way to playing finals.  Opposite to what  most people think, our game plan wasn't that bad last year we just didn't have the legs to run out games, and no fit forwards to take advantage of all the inside 50s.

We know what happens to these privileged prats once success departs...they disappear very quickly, yet they're very bloody noisy soon after their club lucks out with one of the strongest drafts of all time while they're on the bottom.

Your comment on Scully is spot on. He is a cog and as it turns out a cog that doesn't often hurt the opposition. Wish we all had known that about him years and years ago, but it remains a lesson for the future. We copped a lot of pain to ensure we could have him and it was only ever going to be for a very small part of what makes a team. He proved to be no Judd, or Hodge, or Fyfe, or very much at all.

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

Demonlander The Analyser was the sole Trackwatcher out at Casey Fields today to bring you the following observations from this mornings preseason training session. Training  was at Casey today. It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. Activities included kicking for goal,  aerial , contest work etc. I noticed the following players not in match simulation Jack Viney  running laps and looks fine for round one . I think Kolt looks like he’s im

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
