Wasn't there someone on here saying that he was on the verge of leaving? From memory, there was talk of some type of heated meeting between the FD and Tracc's manager.

My recollection that was around the 2019 review period.
Also I recall a big issue of that event was the time in the midfield he desired.
Without it being reported I seem to have the idea the Club (FD ie Josh Mahoney) threw  the bell back in CP5 court a la fitness etc.
Now About 5 months on look what's happened as a result.
Lighter fitter more svelte Trac with a more mature and results based approach To match the Clubs heightened approach from the 2019 disaster culminating in The last week of highs of huge  proportions.  Four Year Plan
Saturday's Marsh gamecresult and Tracs ground breaking BOG backing up his stellar pre season efforts as pacemaker.
Gawnys Captaincy and Jacks dusl Commitment you VC and Club.
Trac recommitting for 2 more years till end of 2022.
General air of sudden maturity around Club  plus Doco showing these signs of unity and care About our  total 43 List players.

Bring 2020 on please!!!

Great news to hear ,looks like he has really lifted his attitude and it showed against the crows. He is the closest player i have ever seen to Ronald Dale

It’s a signing of faith on both parts in my opinion.

I’m presuming (of course) the club know what he is capable of yet aren’t willing to offer a long term contract on huge money - and rightly so.

His management also know what he is capable of yet know he hasn’t lived up to that potential as yet...but this signing takes him to free agency.

It’s no doubt fair on both parties, leads him into a potential long term, big bucks deal at Melbourne provided he performs...or else allows him to explore his options after 2022 if it doesn’t all work out..

Don't discount the possibility that the club wanted to sign him up for longer but he refused. It would make perfect sense to me that Petracca wanted a shorter-term (ie 2 years) while the club wanted longer (3-4 years) for the same reason - in two years time free agency and better form could significantly increase his asking price.

I think I read, (maybe on bigfoty midseason last year) that Tracca wasn't happy.  And that5 the way he looked to me as well.

Hah, putting the tail before the dog again.  Is this how it happens to us.?

I don't even know what this means. Putting the cart before the horse? Or allowing the tail to wag the dog? And who's the tail and who's the dog?

Good point  LDVC on the 2 year term requirement by Petracca - perfectly understandable.

But the huge upside for the club in this deal , is that he will absolutely pull out all stops to have a stellar few seasons to 2022, then at the age of 26- ish and a huge payday, deservedly, beckons.

I suspect that won't be the key motivation next to team success and camaraderie, but all incentives help. And if the club has to pay him a Mill. from 2023 imagine what he will have done to deserve this!

This player could be the highlight for supporters this season.

Rumor has it Petracca wants to play more midfield and was disgruntled it wasn't happening. Club said he wasn't fit enough and he'd get more midfield time if he increased his fitness. Looks like he's increased his fitness over summer and so the club are giving him the midfield time he wants.

Win Win! Trac is a weapon!

Whats coming out of the club at the moment really is a breath of fresh air. Great Media access with the Doco, Good decisions with Captaincy, positive re-signings, an impressive win in first real hit out, Draftees having an impact, positive messaging through the AGM, sponsorship securing, Coaching structure re-jig, focus on fitness appointment.

Its feels like as a club, we are on teh same page, it showing, we are doing more things right than we are wrong, something we historically have not done well.

Great to see but, hhhmmmm am I the only one who thinks this is a little light on the years for the club? This is walking him to free agency (FA) where he can chase bigger $ and we could lose him for no return. (I’ve said it before but having fallen into an Ice Hockey/NHL hole, players regularly push to FA very hard to chase $$ and term on contracts). (Here comes the “he loves the club and being around the boys, I’ve asked him, he wants to be a one club player” responses)

I would offset that by applauding the club for getting the deal done before the season. Petracca looks as though he is about to seriously break out this year. If we didn't get a deal done we would have a handful of clubs offering Petracca serious dollars, which would stress our cap in the next couple of years. So the fact we have managed to lock him away until 2022 is a really good coup. Hopefully by the time Petracca comes out of contract we have other contracts backloaded and have plenty of room for an increased offer for Petracca.

Too right. The alternative is stupid, distracting discussion about his chances of signing.

Or worse the dreaded 'I leave that stuff to my manager, but I'm sure it will all work out with the manager following up with 'we'll wait till the end of the season'

IMO barring any injuries Petrac will perform  and doesn't have to be BOG every game to have an influence on the game..He is doing the right things and has trimmed down to a good playing weight  during the preseason. That is good discipline.

.Will  spend more time in the midfield and showcase his skills to bamboozle the opposition. We have him for the next 3 seasons at least till the end of 2022 when he will turn 27 in Jan 23.  Till then  he will be building a reputation of being one of the elite players of the competition. It certainly is possible.

Great signing.

He looks ripped and ready for a massive year.

Don’t get me wrong I’m happy he is signed up already for a couple more years, as I said for mine I would have really liked a 5 or 6 year lock up as he is going to be a star/cost more money in the next 3 years.

No one wants to go to North, they would still come up short...

general rule of thumb is that when the media goes with the kangas throwing big bikkies at a player they're that much closer to staying at their incumbent club

Yes there was last year it was, not 100% certain on the exact poster but recall it was one of the grenade throwing brigade talking about inside knowledge of a major rift between players and the coaching group.

And I'm still waiting on their predicted blood letting which was to occur when coaches were moved on

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #42 Aidan Johnson

The VFL premiership player was recruited from Werribee to alleviate Melbourne’s forward line woes and give a chop out in the ruck, but he managed only five senior matches in his first season at the club. At times, he was a dominant force at VFL level.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #44 Luker Kentfield

An exciting young key forward, Kentfield was selected in the 2024 mid-season draft but has yet to make his AFL debut. He was sidelined by a severe bout of pneumonia over the summer, which consequently limited his pre-season. Upon his return a month into the season, he commenced in defence but ultimately impressed with his progress at Casey, particularly in the latter part of the season as a strong marking goal kicking forward.

  • AFLW REPORT: West Coast

Melbourne’s response to last week’s heartbreak was emphatic, as the Demons delivered a statement win over West Coast at a windswept Casey Fields. All of the pre-match hype surrounded the coach’s box matchup of Mick Stinear up against his apprentice, Daisy Pearce along with the gloomy weather forecast. In the end, it was less about tactical chess and more about Melbourne’s relentless execution. With rain looming, the DeeArmy and early birds snapped up the best undercover viewing spots.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: West Coast

Epic battle alert.  This Sunday, Casey Fields hosts a coach’s showdown pitting the wits of the master Mick Stinear (92 games, 71.7% win rate) against his protégé Daisy Pearce (16 games, 43.8%). Still early in her coaching journey, Daisy’s record doesn’t yet reflect her impact — but she’s already the best-performed coach at West Coast.Dais’ is mythic.  Like Katniss Everdeen, everyone either wants to kiss her, kill her (sporting metaphor) or be her.  Toothers Daisy Pearce is a role model, someone admired for their heart, humility and humour.

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.
