POSTGAME: MS01 vs Adelaide

Before the anti Spargo brigade get going I thought that while he suffered three glaring skill errors that I can recall he was in the right place at the right time.Correct those skill errors and the Spargo we used to know is back.

Langdon looks likely but his hairstyle makes him easy to spot.

No Fritsch, Brayshaw, Gawn or May and to still win was a good sign.

Easily the best, and most rounded, game he has played for us.  I'm confident he can replicate it during the season.

The one thing that stands out are his clean hands.  He rarely, if ever, fumbles.  If he is in the vicinity then he is winning the ball.

27 contested possessions. ?

7 Tackles ?

645 meters gained ?

Some good signs.

Some decent outside run on occasions.

28 scoring shots.

Petracca, of course.

Running the game out.

TMac and Jones snagging a few. Jones running off half back?

Vanders back.

Tomlinson and Langdon decent.

He looked good today.  Played 70% of the game but still racked up 19 touches and 5 tackles.  If he stays fit he'll be like a new recruit.

Too late...

Failed to make distance from his shot at goal 20m out in pocket...

Melbourne had to win that and running the legs off Adelaide like they did in the last quarter will give them belief that Burgess knows his stuff.

A good solid pre-season hitout.

Three positives:

Fitness - we finished all over them

Petracca

Langdon

Important things to work on:

Kicking generally, but especially into the forward 50

Sticking tackles

Overall:

I'm very content.  Add Gawn, May, Fritta and Gus to the lineup and we will be hard to beat in 2020.

Sure was. That’s quite a list!

I watched last night and he was Fyfe like.

I watched Petracca and he was 1 better and Dustin Martin like. Amazing performance!

Kossie has booked himself a gig for round 1.

Victory for Burgess I reckon. Lots to like about 32, 36, 41, 15 and 20.

Only negative i take from the game is Harmes down back is not a ein for us.

Sparrow at times was Viney like!

Very happy with a win, but Adelaide have lost a lot of experience and you’d think will be bottom 5.

Spargo unfortunately has no AFL attributes, his best hope is to become a tackling/pressure small forward, but that looks unlikely. ANB, like last year, had minimal impact. If he’s getting games during the season then we’ll clearly be struggling.  Weid still can’t take a contested mark, Brown looks a better option.

Spargo - cant kick to a target. Cant handball to someone not under pressure. Cant tackle. Cant mark, took maybe 2/3 dropped many more.

I guess Im anti-spargo.

The Weid. Cant mark. Im anti-weid until I see him worthy of a spot. he was hopeless in the ruck and i know thats not his position. He is on a big contract on the back of 3 decent games.

I agree that he didn't have a great day, however, I think it is worth persisting with.  He's only had one practice game down there, so you'd like to see him given a few more before abandoning the idea.

We still need to lower our eyes when going into the f50 rather than bombing it like we did all last season which worked a treat!

Can someone give a short summary of vanders game. I was unable to see any of the match.

Agree re Harmes. His best position is as a defensive minded mid (not an out and out tagger), and failing that I like him at half forward because he has good hands. Not sure half back will suit, but we will see.

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

Who would have imagined, when the season kicked off early last month, that Melbourne would emerge from the opening six weeks with wins over both Queensland powerhouses? At the time, Gold Coast and Brisbane were the competition’s early pace-setters, the flavours of the month, and the prospect of the Demons toppling both within the course of a fortnight seemed remote. Yet here they are, banking those scalps alongside home victories over two traditional Victorian rivals and building a quietly impressive resume.
