I put forward points of view with the understanding that i may be wrong, and an understanding that nobody can actually know for sure if Bennell would work, or if May would work, or how playing 3 talls would work.

I think you forget your opinions are not facts.

You need to sit down with Ross and Rocket and hash out your differences of opinion with them over this one.

But only after you’ve spoken with the footy depts at Melbourne, Hawthorn, Collingwood and Essendon and explained to them why you think they’ve got their assessments of Steven May all wrong.

Let me know how you get along.

Has the talent to be the best player in the league.

But does't want to be.

Lol.

Was Gaza really a mentor to any of the players at Gold Coast?

Star player at the start of his time there, but a pretty average choice of captain and off feild leader I think I'd say in retrospect.

Nah he was in it for the cash couldn't give a rats about GC.  Not a captain's bullet hole, that's why i mentioned it.

A fine legacy Brad Lloyd left with Freo!  Signed Mundy, Bennell and Ballantyne to one year deals and committed to similar for Sandiland, about the time he announced he was leaving for Carlton.  Those 4 would tie up at least $ .750m of their 2019 sal cap.

None of those guys were going anywhere but retirement.  Someone at Freo took their eye off the ball.  Why on earth sign them up in mid August rather than wait till after the trade period.  Peter Bell must be tearing his hair out trying to right that ship.

Ballantyne was an extraordinary re-signing. They must be banking on him holding the one ring to rule them all. Cause he certainly can’t get a kick.

Yet if I recall correctly, the opportunity for him to be captain was something that was part of the appeal for him.  In retrospect, I think they would have been better off telling Gazza where to go on the captain thing and making Harbrow captain.

GWS certainly did alot better making Ward skipper - huge respect for him.

Have a read of these dragon, you exhibit many of these deductive errors time and time again.

Like i said previously, I don't know if Bennell or May or any player will work. At least i comprehend the limitations of the human mind, you believe that you can tell the future.

For the record, i want May, but i think we can win a flag without him. You know this already, but you choose to change my words to better represent your argument. And that is your issue, you try to win arguments rather than have fruitful discussions.

They sure did with Ward, They set up their club a whole lot better than GC, with picks like Ward, Davis you can tell they did their due diligence.

GC picked up alot of Duds looking for quick cash eg. Brennan from Bris, Josh Fraser from Coll, Bock from Adel etc.

Harbrow seems to have really embraced that footy club and been a really consistent performer.

Can this thread be closed? Waste of time even asking the question!

Couldn't think of anything worse then bringing this muppet into our group.

Rakes in the cash while sitting on his ass and not putting the hard work in.

At his best he could be our isaak smith.

You are underselling him, at his best he would be way ahead of Smith.

However...

@Pennant St Dee I'm interested in your reply on this thread. I think I know what it will be but maybe there has been a big revelation and he is a changed man. If so hard to see why Freo would dump him now...

I would have him, IF he cost nothing and is not clogging the list.

We’ve taken years to build a good culture at the club, why would you risk that by bringing in this bloke? Absolutely crazy anyone would want to take this risk.

I’m not going to state why, but we don’t want this guy anywhere near the club. I’ll leave it at that.

Agree and there's only a finite capacity for player welfare at the club.  There's an opportunity cost associated with burning a whole lot of it on one potentially problem player.

Mate you seem obsessed or maybe seduced by flashy players who have a history of "problems".

These players should be avoided like the plague - keep them away from our club - we have just become competitive after a decade of being a laughing stock.

Ross Lyon has form on this - he got rid of Luke Ball and traded in Andrew Lovett - that worked well didn't it ?

Then he tried Col Silvia and then Bennell - all major fails.

Don't be sucked in by talent - if a player lacks integrity or is a serial prat keep well away.

I'm of the opinion that when you have a really strong core group, you are then in a position to take some risks with the last 2 spots on the list. If i was a club down the bottom of the list, or a club without strong leadership i would never want a troubled player. But look, you could well be right. It would really depend on Bennell's mindset, and whether or not has grown up, which we can never know.

Nothing new just Bell changing the culture Bennell is an exceptional talent and that is why they kept him so long even his WAFL glimpses show how much class he oozes. On talent he is an absolute game breaker think Dangerfield bursting out of congestion with elite disposal (unlike Danger)

Bell knows like many others that the kid won't change he is like Ben Cousins in terms of wanting to have a decent social life whilst actually training really hard. 30 years ago he'd have gotten away with it.

I actually think it is this trait which has caused the recurrence of his soft tissue injuries. Cousins was a freak but Bennell just isn't the same

An absolute no from me

He won't and never will change, he's heading down the same pathway as Ben Cousins. Once they're in that cycle, its really rare that they can mentslly break out of it.

Wouldn’t touch him with a ten foot pole.

Culture, culture,culture!

Sam McClure is reporting on trade radio that Freo are looking to trade him if possible. Obviously has had some troubles but has insanely good talent and would come super cheap. Worth a look for the right price?

A HUGE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

There was a policy that Roosy famously bought to the Swans and tried to implement at Melbourne (due to lack of tenure and players it was hard to implement it fully) that has been credited with bringing a level of success to both.

What was it called again? The no doodleheads policy?

The white line fever thread

People are using our culture as a good reason to get him in. I would use it as a good reason to keep him out.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
