This is an early request to tomorrow's track watchers from you're Melbourne brother.

Players of interest will be:

  • Kossie who didn't train with the group last Monday and seemed to be having shots at goal with the rehab group in media of the camp to date.  We need some information.
  • Is Melk running yet?  Boxing workout last week.
  • Is Oscar Baker in the main group yet.  He was hoping to be so.
  • What was Dunkley doing?  Dubbed the "invisible man" by some he was truly invisible on Monday.
  • Any progress reports on Hannan would be welcome.

Thanks for any input you can provide.

Wedding preparation.

Admittedly I'm a big fan already given his uncle is my all time favourite footballer, but I wouldn't be too worried about this.

Egan on the MFC website today: “We’re pulling them in and out of training a bit just with their loads – obviously they’re only a couple of months into their programs,” he said.

Thought I heard he had minor concussion concern and would be non-contact for a week or two.

The new draftees have modified training loads to gradually build their bodies up, as Lord New linked above.

No concerns with Kossie or any of the new draftees at this stage. Rivers in particular looks like he'll play seniors this year, probably running off half back. Looks a perfect replacement for the Hibberd role.

I get what you are saying, LT, but think Hibbo may take exception to any forecasts of his early demise from the team!

Yeah, i reckon Hibbos got a bit of life left in him yet too Vagg.

There's a bit of a hole left by Frost that hopefully Rivers can fill first. But if he's not ready maybe Smith can fill the void.

Last preseason he (Smith) was training with the forwards, and a few have said that he was progressing nicely before his injury.  Fast forward 12 months and he's basically back to full fitness, but has spent the whole preseason with the defenders?

We are crying out for solid targets up forward, yet we've moved him back where we seemingly have a few solid options already.

Harry Petty came on last year, giving other marking options up front.

And with TMac & Weide, and add LJackson to the mix, I can understand Smith getting pushed back.

Mitch Brown another tall forward, and the tall marking area is well covered.

I think our structure up front will be different from the last seasons. With more pace added, and more marking.   I think Petracca will rotate from bench, more often.

Add Hannan and AVB to the forwardline, often.

Yesterday - Kossie did nearly all or if not most of the drills including match sim where he stuffed a few kicks.

- Melk was running on other oval with Rehab guys.

- Oscar did most of drills.

-Not sure on Dunks. Didn't notice him.

_ Hannan on other oval but did a few bits of training. Maybe a week or two away from full training?

I believe the camp has concluded. I noticed that Carlton are now up in Maroochydore doing their preseason camp.

The official website lists Monday 10th February at 10:30am as the next Open Training Session. I assume there will be closed sessions either at Gosch's, Casey or some other venue in between unless the boys are getting some time off after a gruelling week.

Think I saw something somewhere that indicated they will have one final run this morning in Maroochy, before flying back to Melb this arvo...

We really want a tandem effect of JSmith and Fritta into the forward line - and Hibbo ain't not going to be in the backline, his readiness timeline has been (and will be again) fully reliable for season kick-off - this all pleases me for the 2020 season ahead. As for Rivers, I'd put it to him to be absolutely ready to take the run in the backline at CHB ( a far better choice than '...someone's little brother with chicken wings...') who does not and has not made an impact as a backman across the past three years. That is Frosty's gap, sadly, so we had better fill it with someone keen, hungry-eager, skilled and developmentally at a state of readiness.

I'd prefer Rivers to prove himself at Casey first. I'm guessing you have forgotten Petty's ill timed Dees debut?

Total coincidence. Just landed in Maroochydore from SYDNEY slap bang into a team of Demons. They couldn’t escape.

Asked Brayshaw about the elbow. Said it’s actually pretty sore.

Spoke to Preussy and wished him all the best for the season. You think you know how big they are when you go to training. Up close and personal he is a monster. Bennell was with him and told me that’s not Preuss that’s Gawn. Must have thought I was a dumb Queenslander like his Gold Coast supporters. Wished him the best and glad to hear he looks like coming on board. He looked genuinely pleased. Or maybe shocked a dumb Queenslander knew who he was. Of course I’m not from there.

Hannan said groins are good now and will be joining main group in a week and a half.

Told Richo Saints are my litmus test the last couple of years and I’m depending on his intel to [censored] them. He said no one wants to [censored] them more than him.

I’ve seen lots of training photos of Trac looking very cut, in fact it looks like if he knows there’s a camera around, the shirts off so he makes sure people know how cut he is. But man forget how cut he is. The man is a beast. Hasn’t loss too much bulk where it counts. Huge around the arms. He’s going to bust the comp open this year.

Jetta said he’s already done twice the km’s he did last season at this time. He said there’s about 10 of them who have done the same compared to last year. Said difference in training under Burgo is its a lot more footy orientated. Train the way you play. Said that’s what you want.

Joel Smith said groins are all good now and he’s feeling great and has had a really solid pre season.

One other general observation. In the past when I’ve got up close to the players I’ve been  surprised that they don’t seem as big as you’d expect. This time they all look substantially bigger in their bodies. So looks like we’re going to see running power and stronger bodies.

We put Petty up forward because we literally had no-one else.  Mitch Brown was a delisted veteran who we've picked up as a rookie.  And Jackson hasn't played a game yet.  Presuming all is fair and equal, you've got these 3 ahead of Joel Smith.  Think you've proven my point.

As for shifting him back, I just don't know what role he fills.  Is he our 2nd/3rd tall?  Having him competing with Lever and Oscar?  Is he that mid-sized defender, competing with Hibberd and Hore?  He's not a small like Nev, and he's not a Salem-type.  And given our tall forward stocks, if someone went down in the backline, Petty is a capable replacement.

The initial point was that some think that having a fit Smith will make a significant difference to the team.  I just can't see where he fits in, and at whose expense, and quite frankly, I just don't think he's good enough in the first place, with many players ahead of him in competing positions (as you've kindly pointed out above).

I must admit I've fallen into that trap of being excited that J Smith is training and may make a huge difference to the team this year.

However the reality is that he is largely unproven at AFL level, but has shown glimpses in his handful of games.

Would love for him to become a dangerous high leaping medium-tall forward for us like his Dad who kicked 50 goals for us in the mid 90's.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
