Interesting we were trying to trade up to get Robertson but didn’t have any currency to get it done. We also thought Rivers would be gone too.

It was always going to be Jackson and Kozzie with our first picks it seems!

Just as interesting that Harley Bennell texted Goodwin about Kossy after we took him. Another sign that he has invested in the club.

Hearting Harley already.

It highlights the importance of keeping a heap of currency if you want to move up. The future 4th was only ever going to move pick 30 by 2-3 spots. Calling Carlton and Richmond was a bit of a laugh, although in fairness to our recruiters they seemed to know that.

Robertson's slide and Rivers getting to our pick is an advertisement for being patient.

I think the smartest set up would be to have extra 2nd round picks on offer to make moves if needed but also to group players in ranges and not go too hard too early if you have options

Trade back and still get a player you really like, then use the extra picks to get the next guys on your board..

What an amazing raw insight into how it's all done.

The big thing I took out of that was our interest in Mitch Geogiages.

Well done to the Melbourne media team.

The targeting of Georgiades and the Mitch Brown signing makes me think the club has little to no faith in Weidman making the grade.

And thats not even mentioning LJ whos likely to start as a forward too.

and does the interest in robertson indicate we have no faith in oliver, brayshaw, or viney as inside mids?

yr pulling at straws to pot a player you don't like

Yep.

Mcdonald turns 28 next year and after he and Weideman, the tall forward stocks are all but non-existent.  Brown is very short term insurance and Georgiades wouldn’t be ready to play KPF for a few years.

You think that because our recruitment team hope a 17 year old kid who has been injured most of the year slides to our third pick that we have given up on Weid?

And you think other people's posts are stupid? FMD.

I must be one of the ones who is 'truly stupid'.

Last I checked Weid is a 22 yr old developing key forward who has had a fairly injury interrupted career so far. Talls always take longer to develop as we all know.

Assuming the club has little to know faith in young Weid does seem a little rash don't you think? We lost Hogan who left a fairly sizable hole in our key forward stocks. We struggled for depth at the position last year (predominately due to injury) hence why Petty was swung forward.

I think its more about adding to forward depth. We no longer have guys like Tim Smith and Keilty so adding the likes of Mitch Brown, Jackson and the potential of others makes sense for insurance sake doesn't it?

I apologise if in fact you have inside knowledge that the club does indeed have little to no faith that Weid will work out.

Why.?

Tom McDonald    #25    Age: 27yr 3mth

 Games: 161   Born Sept 18, 1992.     , and possible with foot/ankle issues.

Its lets say 3 Yrs out from T MCd's fading last years.  Now would be the perfect time to grab another key forward,  with the view to hopefully replace  one of our key tall forwards, after the new boys have grown into the bodies and games.

Peak years has to be between 24 and 29Yrs of age,  surely .  Tommy is well into his years as a footballer now.  As is Maxy Gaawn.  And this years draft was light on for Key tall players.

I don't think its a reflection on Weide, at all.   But his time as a newbie, has ended & imo, 2020 he has to start to provide the team with opportunities.

We delisted Pedo, Bull Smith and Keilty over the past 2 years. Do you think targeting Brown has anything to do with Weid? Or maybe we realised we had zero depth when both McDonald and Weid were injured?

I can see all three getting a game when fit just like Smith and Pedo did at stages over the past few years.

Back to the video. Interesting to see we were keen on Robertson and would have taken higher than he was taken if possible. I wonder why so many others over looked him.

I'm also looking forward to part 2. I really enjoyed watching other clubs vids last year. Great insights.

It's wishful thinking, but I liked the Cyril draft pick reference.

Well done to the Melbourne media team.

Georgiadis is a very strong boy with an interupted year, but a competitor.

What I take from Taylor's interest in Robertson, Rivers and Georgiadis along with the two first Rounders in LJ and Kossie is a leaning towards competitors who offer some physicality. Long term and when September is something we hopefully see regularly that's very important

I agree with Taylor that Robertson is a born leader and will prove recruiters wrong

The club (and us supporters) will surely be asking question of Weid this time next year if he’s had another injury and form riddled year. Big concerns if he’s still needing Casey to re-boot on multiple occasions.

As for the draft, it will be interesting to see how Georgiades turns out. I guess it’s a little disappointing the club didn’t get what they truly wanted.

It is called having multiple choices and depth.

For me, as another poster said, Harley Texting Goody is a great thing to hear. Im so excited by what might be with HB.. but also fully tempering my expectations, he really is in the bonus model.. imaging getting 8-10 games out of him on teh way to September, what a prospect.

A very enjoyable little piece from the Melbourne media team.

Georgiades has some similarities to De Goey as a shorter full forward full of power. He could play alongside 2 tall forwards and even a mobile back up ruck.

Im sure the interest was more about a potential top 5 pick heading in to the season sliding to pick 30 due to injury rather than needs.

The need is more for another goal kicker to free up Fritsch and Melksham to play up the ground than a big tall. It is fair to say at this stage that the Weid might still make it as a very good player but it will be because he does the team stuff rather than as a big goal kicker.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
