We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

2019 Player Reviews: #36 Jeff Garlett

JeffGarlett2019Review.png

“Garlett has been a fantastic contributor for the Demons since joining the club at the end of the 2014 season, with his highlight coming in 2017 when he led the club’s goal kicking with 42 majors.

The dangerous small forward slotted 321 goals over the course of his career and was a reliable contributor to his second club during the 78 games he played.” -

Jeff spent most of the past two seasons giving off the impression of wanting to be doing anything other than playing football. That said, his body of work in the preceding seasons was very solid and our inability to nurture a replacement during his time at the club is an indictment of our recruiting and player development.

That 2017 year was a great one for him, and i will never forget the night we beat the Crows in Adelaide.

That night Jeffy was doing Jeffy things, lost my voice and all great memories Jeffy.

#thankyou

It seems he was distracted by bigger things than football in 2018 and I noted he had started 2019 the way he played in 2017. If you recall, he was injured in one of the Pre Season games and when he returned he showed he was stepping back into form, only to be injured again. I loved watching him play from day one and will miss his scintillating opportunism.

I wonder if it was a genuine de-listing or a mutual parting of ways.

Still reckon he had a little left in the tank and at worst would've been handy depth for our small forwards.

He hasn't really earned a 1 year contract, however useful it is to have his 'potential' as a backup option. It was better to give others with desperation to succeed a go, i think the club turned over a new leaf in that regard.

Was our leading average goal kicker this year.

And Daniel Menzel averaged 2 in his final two seasons at Geelong. Where is he now? There are other factors besides goals at play in working out who deserves a contract and who doesn't.

Not saying there isn't, but I think he gets harshly judged by some fans, ironically (and not directing this at you btw) by many who then bemoan our lack of outside skill, scoring power and "x factor".

I am definitely one who bemoans our lack of outside skill, scoring power and 'x factor'. And it remains a huge issue for us, which is why i really love the drafting of kozzie and jackson and the chance Benell might play for us.

That said as much as much as i was a huge jeffy fan he lost his will for the contest somewhere and his delisting was an inevitability.

That's fair enough. And I've been a little harsh in regard to his re-occuring shoulder injuries that have sidelined him. However the past two seasons (17/18) there has been a constant debate over whether the lack of pressure/effort level questions hanging over him outweigh the x-factor/goals value, and last year by virtue of him having a contract, there really wasn't a need to address the issue.

But now that it was re-signing time, did we actually want to keep a player on the list where we have this year by year 'will we won't we delist him?" issue there? - With the selection of Pickett and lifelines to Bennell, Brown as well as an injury list with VDB, Smith, there just isn't enough space anymore to keep a 30 year old small forward with these doubts hanging over him. And his delisting, to me, signals that the club don't think there will be a change of circumstance a year on. I think he and the club needs a fresh start, fresh blood. Bring in unknown quantities.

Was always going to struggle with our current game plan of congested forward lines and long bombs to the 20m area in front of goal, where there often wasn’t a tall marking option to at least bring the ball to ground, at least this season.

Jeff was still very good if he could get a one on one in an open forward line, just didn’t happen much for us.

On a slightly related note wouldn't it be great if the AFLNT (or whatever is its name) could become the face of summer football.

I can see southern based players who are NQR flocking up north to play with the local teams.

Think Big Bash.....

Frankly the NT govt would be much better funding such a comp with Federal government help rather than  the peripatetic likes of ourselves and the Gold Coast.

Had a couple of good years with us largely running around the back making the most of clear space. Good on him. Highly skilled, but pea hearted over the last year or 2. Was exactly what we needed in 2019, but I think the game stepped up a notch and left him behind.

Let's hope Kossie proves to be a 10 year small forward gun.

I still would have kept Jeffy for another year over someone like Josh Wagner.

But that's just me personally...

Not just you Dazzler. There's a few I'd have let go long before Garlett. On his form before blowing his shoulder last year he'd have been handy while Kozzie prepares for AFL duties. I wish Jeffy well

He struggled 2018-2019 with deaths in his family and subsequent motivation to invest energy into his football. Completely understandable.

He’s scores more goals than any Demon this decade, and I’m thankful he came across to the red and blue when we were still a [censored] team. Definitely provided a spark and consistent goal scoring option, which we are now sorely lacking.

Best of luck Jeff!

This is a horrible comment where either you know his personal circumstances and are choosing to be a terrible person, or you don't know and then you should perhaps reconsider the public comments you make about people when not knowing what they've been through.

Yep, he lost a very close cousin of his back in 2017 as well which I think really affected him personally.

Love Jeffy and wish him all the best here on.

Its actually a very accurate comment.  I watched Jeffy play at Casey in 2018 & for whatever reason he was poor & not trying very hard.  Everybody is subject to different personal circumstances & pressures but when you pull on a jumper & get paid a bucketload of money you have to expect criticism.

I can't see why he gets judged by different rules than say Stretch or Kennedy Harris.

No one said criticism was not allowed.

Calling someone a "pea heart" is not a grown up way to constructively critique someones football performance though. Especially given the circumstances.

However; you sound like one of those people who think because a young man is wearing a footy jumper and being paid that it entitles you to say whatever you like about them so maybe I'm expecting too much.

Pea hearted efforts on the field.

You may choose to publicly allude to personal circumstances, I'll only comment on his football performance. Which do you think he'd prefer to have aired online?

Wish him the best, he was great to watch when switched on. Look forward to seeing what he can do up north. But the last couple of years his efforts on the field were terrible.

Check your outrage LN.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
