Brendan McCartney Leaving at Seasons End

JV7

Recommended Posts

Apparently Macca worked very closely with Harmsey last year and for that we can be thankful. He was integral getting us into finals.

That being said, this year has been a disaster on all fronts and if that means we have to move on certain people to improve then so be it.

Its about time this club showed some ruthless aggression.

Cards I think you are referring to my training report of the morning before the coaching changes were announced. Macca was clear that the group needed to train harder, how you train is how you play! But he said they were young and would learn what was needed to get to the top. At the time I thought (maybe wrongly) that he was signalling a playing group that was content with last year’s achievements and he was trying give them a message that they had a long way to go. When I later heard he was being moved sideways away from direct player involvement I must say the alarm bells went off! The playershappy to Coast along and worse a coaching group happy with what Macca didn’t like.

Interesting in light of today’s announcement is that he asked me if I was retired and when I said yes he responded that he wanted 2 more years to get that premiership. I can remember responding, give us 2 flags and he responded he will be happy with one. So that interchange back in June tells me he has been pushed out. If you read  the weasel word corporatespeak in the media release that is obvious.

Earl sounds like it was you. I’m obviously slightly missing what this post is trying to get across as I’m not sure what you mean by “signalling playing group content with last year (maybe wrongly)...”

Seems pretty clear he was right if that’s what you thought, as in the players we’re taking the soft approach (amazing it took til June to work that out) and as usual the fizz weak fuschia players have won again.

Well In my view OLD SCHOOL is better than what Goodwin has delivered. Bad Move MFC!

“He is one of my best mates and it has been a privilege to work so closely with him.”

The pair have formed a tight relationship during their time together, as McCartney helps bring the best out of those around him.
“The impact that Macca has had on the entire football department, including the playing group, has been profound,” Goodwin said.

“He is an incredible person and the club has been extremely lucky to have someone of his calibre.”

Think this puts to bed that he wasn't getting on with the Coach. I also believe that this is Brendan's choice and he is looking for a change, so not a bad move by the MFC at all.

Just caught up with reading this thread/news.

For such a potentially divisive topic, the discussion has been much more....civilised and relevant than of late. Like someone has gone on holidays.

FWIW I reckon change is good here, thanks for your time Macca. Onwards and upwards.

Correct. have heard he is interested in another senior coaching gig, may feel a senior assistant role at another club is the best way to get his name back into those conversations. wouldn't be surprised if the Suns are looking at him on decent $$ as a good football person to come up and support Dew and develop their young players.

You may be right Red but Macca said to me just 2 months ago that he wanted 2 years with this group to get that elusive flag (see my earlier post). He may have changed his mind but I doubt it. If you read the corporate speak release it goes on about his attributes and his great contributions and relationships with Goodwin but gives no reason why he is going! Not even the usual ones of seeking opportunities outside MFC or wanting to spend more time with his family. In short he has jumped before he was pushed!

you have to wonder about how much of an impact Goodwin will actually allow assistants to have, if we got a new defensive coach would he allow them to set up their own structures?

ALLEGEDLY.....Macca had a falling out with 2 senior players and that created a divide among the others. It got to the point where several senior players wouldn't acknowledge him at all.

Don't shoot me.  I'm only the piano player...

Interesting. Clearly SOMETHING happened as the team morale has looked  low  for some time. McCartney does have a history of getting the senior players offside so it wouldn’t surprise. It’s his big failing.  If thats correct then I’m SO glad they acted the way they did and didn’t circle the wagons around him as they did w Schwab after 186. This is a team in terrible need of a summer reset, a big change in on and off field personal and a change in captaincy.

He had said he'd  have liked to see our his footy days at the MFc.

His nature doesn't  suit all. Has a very singular idea about footy. This has been shown to ultimately  not be an overly successful one ( not hust with us ).

I know for a fact hes not liked in certain circles...but others praise him.

This is a huge change for us. A positive  one. Positive  because it will act as a catalyst for more changes.

Keep going Melbourne. ..get that broon busy..  lots more to sweep out the door.

All the best to Macca and thanks for the hard work.

There aren't always hsopy/fairytale endings in footy

Credited with Clarry Choo Choo's development as well!

Official. Rook is gone too I've heard on the rumour mill. Richardson to replace Macca IMO.

https://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2019-08-05/mccartney-set-to-depart-at-seasons-end

Thought his days were numbered after the mid season reshuffle - particularly given that our forward line set up, especially for the first half of the season, was diabolical.

I like McCartney, and I appreciate his contributions to the club, but it’s clear some changes need to be made.

Would be very happy to see Alan Richardson in this role.

Can someone please enlighten me as to what the sorts of things McCartney is supposedly doing to get people offside? Is it the way he delivers his messages? The messages themselves? Or something else?

As someone with zero inside knowledge of this sort of stuff, it would help me understand the consistent rumours.

McCartney seems like a hugely passionate person who has assisted any number of the players on the list. Hopefully this is genuinely a recognition of the end of the road for him at Melbourne and a change in coaching direction is needed, as opposed to something more problematic. Either way, he should be thanked for his efforts, even if this year hasn't worked out.

For the Club, I really hope this is a sign of admission that they have stuffed it up and a new approach to the game is warranted.

My son was coached by McCartney and he liked him, I thought he was a jarring tactless boor (McCartney not my son). Different folks different strokes?

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
