The jungle drums are beating of the prospect that Bolton might get the chop.

While i have always felt that Bolton was the right man for the job coming from the Hawthorn environment, i am bewildered that the blow torch is not on their list manager SOS.

Right now they would be laughing with pick 1 in their pockets sewn up, but traded it during the draft period to adelaide who currently have pick 1 now.

Over the years SOS hes brought in VFL standard players to fill in list position. The names of Jarrod Pickett, Rhys Palmer, Alex Fasolo, Cam O' Shea, liam Sumner, Aaron Mullett, Andrew Phillips, Tom Bugg, Matt Shaw, Daniel Gorringe, Sam Kerridge, Billy Smedts, Kristian Jacksh, Hugh Goddard and Matt Kennedy are just some of the names that he has stockpiled with and that have been unsuccessful. 

With those names that he has bought in surely he has to come under the microscope?

    Not sure that those players are the issue and, other than Kerridge and Kennedy, I'm not sure they have given up much to get them. It would be like judging Jason Taylor based on the performances of C.Wagner, Bugg, Michie and Kolodjashnij.

    The bigger issue is the number of failed first round picks through 2008-2014, excluding Cripps of course. As with Melbourne's poor drafting throughout the 2000s (N.Jones aside), it takes 5 or 6 years for this to become noticeable as you have a shortfall of top talent in the mid 24-28 age bracket. Carlton have a proud history of picking the wrong types of players. Even guys like Murphy and Kreuzer are just average players who rarely influence games (when not injured).

    Bolton is an easy scapegoat, and removing him is cheaper than having a full clean out of the football department, but I'm not convinced he is the problem at Carlton.

    We should take them over. They have some good kids, a good trading ground and club facilities.

    Just  pander to the Carltonites for five years by using the jumper every now and then.

    we will pick up 10% of their supporters and have a great facility in inner Melbourne.

    It would be way cheaper than all the hair brain schemes suggested to give us a home.

    FWIW I can see Carlton getting a PP this year to compensate for their stupid trade. 

    Probably a end of first round so not too many teams kick up a fuss...

    I agree with you Dazzle. SOS has done some terrible work in his time at Carlton.

    He originally drafted a heap of these kids at GWS and when they identified that they were no good he doubled down and traded for them at Carlton. 

    The Stocker trade is looking to be the cherry on top of a long list of bad decisions.

    If Bolton goes then surely Silvangni goes too.

    The gap between us and finals is only slightly wider than the gap, for Carlton, between last and not-last.

    I was still speaking optimisitcally about Carlton's medium and longer term prospects early this season, on the understanding that their cluster of young agile midfielders could develop in a wave, with Cripps and now Walsh providing the star-level core.

    But that optimism has faded for me, and more importantly it looks like it has evaporated within the Blue's themselves.

    Carlton supporters will be shaking with anxiety about the prospect of losing any of that handful of stars that keep the flame flickering. For example, Charlie Curnow might decide that the reason for his stalling progress is the team he's playing in (and when you're out of form but have still kicked a third of your team's goals in the last two rounds, you could start to think that way). To have him leave in a meagre trade when he is at such a low point himself would be just devastating for Blues fans, especially when they can already spend each round counting how many more goals ex-Carlton players have kicked compared to the entire Cartlon team.

    Charlie Curnow might be a handy acquisition on the cheap, come to think of it.

    They wouldn't give him up cheap even if he wanted to leave. Too many clubs would want him (not saying i wouldn't like him though).

    I have no idea what the level of his ability is but it appears to be the old easy out. Much easier to replace one coach than 20 players who are not up to it. Took us the best part of six years to make a significant improvement to the list.

    Why is SOS not on the way out at the same time, he is after all the archithect of their list and he has been there some time.

      A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

      What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around.It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
